Biology is now left in our College without any fellowship or scholar ship to enable a promising student to devote a year of his life to original investigation before commencing his career as a teacher or medical student, and our well-equipped Research laboratory has couse quently to remain unoccupied during the greater part of the year. We cannot help feeling that if these facts were more generally known some help might be forthcoming from those who realise what Biology has done and is doing for the development of rational methods of modern medical research. It is probable that this volume of the Studies is the last of the series. Original work Will be carried on as usual in the laboratories, but by increasing the list of institutions and persons to whom we send separate copies of our papers as they appear, we hope to avoid in future thenecessity of reprinting them in a volume form. Works in exchange for the Milnes Marshall Zoological library and the library of the Botanical department will at all time be gratefully received. We cannot allow this opportunity to pass without expressing our sense of the loss to Biological science by the death of our friends, Dr. Pollard and Mr. Hick. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies From the Biological Laboratories of the Owens College, Vol. 1 The present volume, the first of a series which the Council propose to issue from time to time, consists of papers containing the results of investigations conducted in the Biological Laboratories of the College during the past two or three years. Two papers of earlier date have been included because they deal with a problem that has attracted much attention of late years, and one of the latest phases of which is discussed in Dr. Beard's essay on the Branchial Sense Organs of Vertebrates. Mr. Marshall Ward's paper on An Aquatic Myxomycete, and the contributions of Mr. Dendy and Mr. C. F. Marshall appear here for the first time. The remaining papers are reprinted from the Transactions of Scientific Societies, or from Scientific Journals, the editors of which have courteously granted permission to republish them and to reproduce the plates by which they are illustrated. Special interest attaches to the two earlier papers of Mr. Marshall Ward, and to those of Dr. Beard and Mr. Fowler, as the investiga tions the results of which they record were carried on by these gentlemen during their tenure of Bishop Berkeley Research Fellow ships. To the generous encouragement afforded by the founder of these fellowships is due the opportunity for the completion of these researches, and to him this volume is respectfully dedicated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Biology, Vol. 3: From the Biological Department of the Owens College The present volume of the Studies contains a series of papers that were either written or published before I entered upon my duties as Beyer Professor of Zoology, and, with the exception of the essay by Dr. Hurst on the Structure of Archæopteryx, they were all published during the lifetime of my distinguished predecessor, the late Professor Arthur Milnes Marshall. I cannot claim therefore that any of the work recorded in this volume was done at my advice or under my guidance and supervision, nor can I, on the other hand, be held responsible for the accuracy of the observations or for the opinions expressed in their essays by their several authors. The delay that has occurred in the publication of the volume, consequent on the sudden death of Dr. Marshall and the lapse of time before appointment of his successor, was unavoidable; but I trust that the appearance of the IIIrd volume of the Studies will be none the less welcome to those who are interested in the work that is being carried on in the scientific laboratories of our College. I would take this opportunity of reminding those Zoologists who read this volume that on the death of Dr. Marshall his relatives very generously gave his scientific books and pamphlets to the Owens College, for the use of the students and teachers of the same for all time. It would add very greatly to the value of this collection if Zoologists would kindly forward to me, for inclusion in 'the Marshall Library,' any separate copies of their publications that they can spare. Such donations would be most gratefully received, as certain to prove of very considerable assistance to those of us who are engaged in original work in this laboratory. The third volume of the Studies, although it is the last in which any part was taken by Professor Marshall, does not, by any means, record the end of his work. The stimulus of his teaching and the energy of his character must remain with us in the Owens College for many years to come, and his influence will long be felt in the writings both of his pupils and successors.
