Book Bibliotheca Anglo Judaica

Download or read book Bibliotheca Anglo Judaica written by Joseph Jacobs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica: A Bibliographical Guide to Anglo-Jewish History IN the following pages we have attempted to bring together the raw materials of the history Of the Jews in England, hitherto scattered among many thousand volumes or tracts, but some day, we hope, to be properly digested and suitably presented in artistic form. Our aim has been to prepare the way for this consummation, by arranging our materials in such a way as to make them most easily available for the students of anglo-jewish history - ii any such there be. We have accordingly classi fied the entries, and under each class we have arranged them alphabetically or chronologically, according as we considered either method of arrangement more suitable, letting uniformity give way to utility. As so much of the work is already arranged alphabetically, and so much else is anonymous, and as our immediate purpose is to subserve history rather than bibliography, an Index did not seem necessary. We have prefixed to the lists of books some account of the mss. Containing information on anglo-jewish history. Here we have been working on almost entirely virgin soil, which was scarcely even touched by the investigations connected with the late anglo-jewish Historical Exhibition. Where possible it has been our aim to give some short account of the contents of the various mss., so that the student may judge whether it is worth consultation. The bibliography itself is divided into three parts, deal ing respectively with the Pre-expulsion period up to 1290. Book The Left the Right and the Jews

Download or read book The Left the Right and the Jews written by W.D. Rubinstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this book examines anti-semitism in the Western world. The author concludes that, fringe neo-Nazi groups notwithstanding, significant anti-semitism is largely a left-wing rather than a right-wing phenomenon. He finds that Jews have reacted to this change in their situation and in attitudes towards them by making a shift to the right in most Western countries, with the major exception of the United States. Considering the contribution of Jews to socialist thought from Marx onwards and the equally lengthy history of right-wing anti-semitism, this shift is one of the most significant in Jewish history. This movement to the right is discussed in separate chapters, as is Soviet anti-semitism and the status of the State of Israel. Examined in depth are the implications of this shift in attitude for Jewish philosophy and self-identity.

Book The Pulse of Progress

Download or read book The Pulse of Progress written by Ellsworth Huntington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulse of Progress: Including a Sketch of Jewish History Three primary considerations have led to the writing of this book. The first is the modern movement for setting forth the re sults of scientific research, not only in technical publications, but in clear, interesting, and non-technical form without the eucum brance of references, footnotes, and details of proof. The second is the frequently expressed opinion of a number of friends that the ideas as to man and his environment which I have set forth in a dozen books ought to be summarized in a single volume. In the third place, some one ought soon to write a history of human progress which will take full account of recent advances in our knowledge of human geography, ethnography, economics, soci ology, and biology. As a preparation for this, it seems highly de sirable that persons who have original ideas along these lines should set them forth in such a way that they can be subjected to criticism. At first the plan was to limit the book strictly to the three purposes named above. As usually happens, however, the prog ress of the work soon led to the addition of new material in order to round out the subject. Chapters II, III, and IV present the results of new investigations made especially for this book. Other new material is scattered in smaller bits elsewhere. Chap ters V to X are mainly a restatement, rearrangement, and revision of material published during the last twenty years in the books and articles mentioned in the list preceding the index. It has not seemed necessary or advisable to use quotation-marks, al though sections oi as much as two or three pages have, in some cases, been taken, almost unchanged, from some of the books. The source, however, is indicated in all such cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Jews in England During the reigns of Stephen and Henry II. These persecutions continued with little intermission, yet still they remained indus rions and uncomplaining, eager on every occasion to testify their loyalty and allegiance. In the last year of Henry Il.'s reign a parliament was convened at Northampton to raise supplies for an expedition to the Holy Land. The whole Christian population were assessed at while the Jews alone, in numbers but a very small fraction of the king's native subjects, were burdened with a tax of 3330 having been during this one reign already tortured from them. The abandonment of the project, followed as it was by the king's death, prevented this illegal extortion; and it was perhaps from joy at this unexpected relief that the Hebrews thronged in crowds to Westminster to witness the poro nation of Richard, sumptuously attired, and bearing rich offer ings, to testify their eager desire to conciliate the king. Download or read book The History of the Jews Classic Reprint written by Gotthard Deutsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews IT is not frequent that an author on any Jewish subject receives the encouragement of a demand for a second edition of his book. My volume of Jewish history which is again submitted to the public, in tended primarily as a manual of instruction, is re vised chiefly by being brought up to date. This re vision became necessary owing to the great changes which the World War has produced in Central and Eastern Europe. Desiring not to enlarge the book too much, I have added merely the most important facts and names in modern Jewish history. In the chap ters dealing with the older epochs, only a few in significant additions have been made. Other changes are merely textual. It still remains for the intelligent teacher to explain the facts given in the book which, by the very nature of its intention, makes dry read ing for the uninitiated. Every history, no matter how large, is bound to be selective. My book, therefore, like every other on the subject, will be Open to criticism in regard to omissions. In the modern period especially, I have no doubt that some one will find certain names omitted, but I have conscientiously weighed the question in every instance and believe to have been impartial and to have deserved from fair-minded critics the Tal mudic compliment - that an author is to be com mended both for what he includes and for what he excludes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2007. This classic work explores the seminal early periods of Jewish history. The destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. by the army of Nebuchadnezzar marks a radical turning point in the life of the people of Jehovah, for then the history of the Hebrew state and monarchy ends, and the Jewish history, the records of experiences, not of a nation but of the scattered, oppressed remnants of the Jewish people, begins.
