Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Advanced Physiology There are two extremes open in writing a brief treatise on any natural science. One is to state briefly and explicitly those facts which are seriously questioned by no one. It is to enumerate and tabulate what is definitely known about the subject. In the field of animal physiology there is much which is "settled" information, and which it is believed, will not be materially changed by the developments of the future. Most of the gross anatomy is finished, by no means all, but many points in histology are determined, while in pure physiology there are fewer things that are considered explained. Thus the phenomena of respiration and the dynamics of the blood flow are to a very large extent known in terms of chemical and physical laws. To limit a book to this would be to make it stereotyped, dead, and leave the reader with the impression that physiology like Sanskrit was finished, and like every finished problem had no longer a living interest of its own. Most of the ordinary textbooks err on this side. They state ex cathedra, fact after fact, they seldom give the reasons which have led physiologists to adopt the views in question, and they seldom leave the idea that many things are still being studied with the hope that more study will give new light. Most textbooks leave the mind of the student with the belief that all has been told, that there is nothing more to add, and that therefore there is no need for him to try to improve on the text-book, by making his own observation. The feeling of the authority of the text-book in physiology has robbed many a student of the desire to investigate the subject further. Like the Scholastics of the Middle Ages they turn to the book as to Aristotle, fully convinced that all knowledge is contained in it, and that what is not contained is impossible of access. The other extreme is to give in detail all the scientific controversies of the past and present. It is to state indiscriminately pros and cons until the conviction settles over one that nothing is definite and all is confusion. Especially true is this when these conflicting views are at once presented to the beginner in the subject. Book Hand Book of Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hand Book of Physiology Classic Reprint written by W. D. Halliburton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Physiology I save once more subjected this book to a thorough revision, and endeavoured to incorporate in it the results of all important recent work in the widening physiological field. In so doing, I have tried to keep in mind that the book is a student's text-book, and that it is therefore neces sary not to overwhelm its readers with a mass of unnecessary detail. The introduction of new matter entails the excision of what is antiquated or unnecessary, and so I have been able to keep the size of the work pretty much as it was. The present edition exceeds its predecessor by only fiiwen pages, and this increase is largely due to the fact that about twenty new illustrations have been added. It is immssible to enumerate all the changes now introduced, for hardly a page has escaped some alteration. The principal additions are, however, as follows: New sections have been intro duced on the significance of Nissl's granules, on Waller's work on the electrical currents of the eyeball, on Cannon's researches in connection with stomach movements, and on Waymouth Reid's investigation of the processes of absorp tion. The sections relating to the electrical phenomena of muscle, to the proteids, to the ductless glands, to the muscles of the larynx, to the cranial nerves, and to. Book A Text Book of Human Physiology Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Human Physiology To set fixed limits to the subject matter of physiology is a very difficult task, because, properly conceived, large portions of the entire group of medical and biological sciences belong to its province. A text-book designed primarily for medical students can, however, regard the field as somewhat more restricted; for the prospective physician has abundant opportunity to amplify his knowledge of the bodily functions from his other studies. Hence in this book I have followed the usual custom and have brought together only so much of our information respecting the human body as can be described as pertaining to its normal functions. The discoveries made in the realms of practical medicine, of experimental pathology and of pharmacology, which in many respects are so full of significance for the processes of the body, are, therefore, for the most part passed by. In like manner the facts of comparative physiology have been alluded to only in exceptional cases, since an exhaustive discussion of them would have increased the size of the book to a not inconsiderable extent. For the same reason I have been unable to find a place for the short histological discussion customary in text-books. I do not regard this as an error, for a necessarily brief and superficial resume of the most important histological facts could be of no great service, since the student needs a more extensive knowledge of the finer structure of the body and must in any case obtain this from the text-books devoted especially to that subject. I do not therefore at all mistake the great importance of histology for physiology; on the contrary, I would recommend that in the, study of a text-book of this science a text-book of histology (and one of anatomy) be always at hand in order to combine the physiological facts with the histological and anatomical facts. Physiological chemistry also has developed so far that more and more it can claim the right to be regarded as an independent science. On the other hand it is not possible to present the physiological facts without reference to the chemical processes of the body. Download or read book A Textbook of Physiology Classic Reprint written by Martin Flack and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Physiology The preparation of this textbook was begun before the war at a time when we were both actively engaged in teaching at the London Hospital Medical College, and when it was considered that we might with advantage put together and harmonize the physiology we were teaching. In order to secure uniformity of style, each section has been written in the first instance by the same hand, and then finished in its present form by careful collaboration between the two of us. While physiological research has been confined in many directions, progress along certain lines has been especially remarkable since the outbreak of war. We have endeavoured to take these recent advances into consideration, before completing the work, in spite of the great difficulties under which we, in common with all physiologists, have laboured. The book has been written with the primary object of giving to the student in an easily understandable form the fundamental facts and theories of physiology, hearing in mind the limitations necessary in a student's textbook. We have followed the example of Michael Foster, and have avoided burdening the students memory with the names of authorities. When ready to leave the narrow scope of a textbook for the wide realms of independent thought, those who wish to extend their physiological knowledge can easily find their way into the literature of research by means of the various archives and journals of physiology. Although written primarily to meet the requirements of the medical student, it is hoped that, in view of the ever-increasing importance of the proper application of physiology to general medicine, the work may also prove of value to the general practitioner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary System of Physiology, Vol. 2 The reception, which the first volume of this trea tise experienced, could leave no doubt in my mind as to the necessity of completing the work; and I lament that certain circumstances, which were unavoidable, have delayed for so long a period the publication of the second part. As, however, the circumstances to Which I allude no longer exist, I may indulge a hope that the third volume will succeed the present at a considerably shorter interval. 1 have, as nearly as pos sible, pursued the same method of giving an account of the best established facts, and the most approved by potheses; freely offering my remarks upon them, and pointing out any part which appeared to be objection able. I have, however, found it a very difficult task to arrive at any satisfactory conclusion, with respect to many of the topics that are discussed in this volume. For, singular as it may appear, although most of them profess to be established on the basis of direct experi ments, and such as would appear not to be of very dif ficult execution, yet we shall find that every step of the track through which I have had to pass, is on debate able ground. On this account, I have frequently felt it necessary to dissent from the Opinions of the most eminent physiologists of the age but when I have done this, i have given my reason for the dissent; and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners IT was the aim of the authors in writing this work for its original edition to gather within brief compass those facts of Physiology with which medical students should be familiar in order that they might successfully pursue the more advanced courses of the medical curriculum. It was not the intention to produce a work of originality nor one which should take the place of more elaborate text-books in the instruction of students, but one offering a means of quickly reviewing the essential features of the subject. The demand which exhausted successive printings of the first edition indicates that the work answered its purpose as a brief exposition of Physiology suited to the needs of students and practitioners, and it is hoped that this new and thoroughly revised issue may meet with equal favor.
