Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genoa: How the Republic Rose and Fell The history of a powerful naval and commercial commonwealth, which indeed occupied but a small speck of Europe but which through its colonies and research spread an influence over the then known world, must be regarded by the Anglo-Saxon race with especial interest, as forming one of the steps in that ladder of progress by which we have succeeded in attaining such a pitch of commercial prosperity. Beneath us on this ladder are the Dutch, Hanseatic, Portuguese, Venetian, and Genoese steps, each and all assisting us out of that maze of barbarism which was incident on the fall of the Roman Empire. The Italian Republics were the first to succeed in substantially gathering together the threads of commerce which had been known to the old world of Ph nician, Greek, and Roman merchants, and when this firm foothold had once been re-established, the upward progress was greatly simplified. Pisa and Amalfi were amongst the first to assist in this direction, but Pisa and Amalfi fell powerless before more than mere local prosperity had been attained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Subalpine Kingdom, Vol. 2 of 2: Or Experiences and Studies in Savoy, Piedmont, and Genoa IF you converse in Piedmont with any advocates of the old order of things, you are sure to be informed that the moral character of the humbler classes has marvellously deteriorated of late. According to them, the simplicity of the population, urban and rural, exactly eight years ago, was something Arcadian. Now, they aver, all are corrupt. Respect for religion has disappeared, and with it respect for morality. The natural affections are daily trampled on. Crime and murder stalk through the land. Book A Companion to Medieval Genoa

Download or read book A Companion to Medieval Genoa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Companion to Medieval Genoa introduces non-specialists to recent scholarship on the vibrant and source-rich medieval history of Genoa. Focusing mostly on the eleventh to fifteenth centuries, the volume positions the city of Genoa and the Genoese within the broader history of the Italian peninsula and the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages. Thematic contributions highlight the interdependence of local, regional, and international concerns, and serve as a helpful corrective to the traditional overemphasis of Florence and Venice in the English-language historiography of medieval Italy. The volume thus offers a fresh perspective on the history of medieval Italy—as well as a handy introduction to the riches of the Genoese archives—to undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in related fields. Contributors are Ross Balzaretti, Carrie E. Beneš, Denise Bezzina, Roberta Braccia, Luca Filangieri, George L. Gorse, Paola Guglielmotti, Thomas Kirk, Sandra Macchiavello, Merav Mack, Jeffrey Miner, Rebecca Müller, Antonio Musarra, Sandra Origone, Giovanna Petti Balbi, Valeria Polonio, Gervase Rosser, Antonella Rovere, Stefan Stantchev, and Carlo Taviani.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genoese World Map, 1457: Facsimile and Critical d104 Incorporating in Free Translation the Studies of Professor Theobald Fischer, Revised With the Addition of Copious Notes It is a much less pretentious map than that drawn by Fra Mauro,2 but it is of almost equal date and not second to it in scientific importance. There is evidence that its author was better informed on certain geographical mat ters than was the monk of Murano, as, for example, con cerning certain European, African, and Indian contour features, and that the peculiar form he chose for his map had less influence in leading him to distort what could then be called remote regions than had the circular form which Fra Mauro chose.
