Plasma sources fall essentially in three categories: the solar wind, the ionosphere (both prevalent on Earth), and the satellite-related sources. Throughout the text, the case of each planet is described, including the characteristics, chemical composition and intensity of each source. The authors also describe how the plasma generated at the source regions is transported to populate the magnetosphere, and how it is later lost. To summarize, the dominant sources are found to be the solar wind and sputtered surface ions at Mercury, the solar wind and ionosphere at Earth (the relative importance of the two being discussed in a specific introductory chapter), Io at Jupiter and – a big surprise of the Cassini findings – Enceladus at Saturn. The situation for Uranus and Neptune, which were investigated by only one fly-by each, is still open and requires further studies and exploration. In the final chapter, the book offers a summary of the little we know of Uranus and Neptune, then summarizes in a comparative way what we know of plasma sources throughout the solar system, and proposes directions for future research.

Book excerpt: We have investigated the interaction of Io, Jupiter's innermost Galilean satellite, with the Io plasma torus, and the interaction of Ganymede with the corotating Jovian plasma. With the successful insertion of the Galileo spacecraft into orbit around Jupiter, many new observations have been made of the Jovian magnetosphere. Some of the most exciting results thus far have been in regards to Jupiter's satellites, Io and Ganymede. In both cases the large perturbations to the background (Jovian) magnetic field have been consistent with the satellites' possession of an intrinsic magnetic field. The gravity measurements implying a differentiated core at both Io and Ganymede makes internal generation of a magnetic field by dynamo action in these satellites plausible, and, in the case of Ganymede, the identification of an intrinsic field is apparently unambiguous. For Io the situation is less clear, and further analysis is necessary to answer this important question. During the past year, we have used time-dependent three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to study these plasma-moon interactions. The results from these simulations have been used directly in the analysis of the Galileo magnetometer data. Our primary emphasis has been on the Io interaction, but we recently presented results on the Ganymede interaction as well. In this progress summary we describe our efforts on these problems to date. The Geomagnetosphere is the nearest giant natural laboratory; research is made possible by use of satellites to investigate in detail different plasmas and energetic processes in space caused by the interaction of high kinetic energy solar wind plasmas and their perturbations (Coronal Mass Ejections - CME, Interplanetary Shock Waves - ISW, Interplanetary Interaction Regions - IIR) frozen in Interplanetary Magnetic Fields (IMF) with the rotated main geomagnetic field. This interaction leads to dynamic transformation of magnetic fields in the geomagnetosphere, generation and trapping high energy particles (which can be called as Magnetospheric Cosmic Rays - MCR), and the generation of multiple instabilities and electromagnetic radiations. These processes are in principle similar to processes in magnetospheres of other planets and their magnetic satellites, the atmosphere of the Sun and other stars, interplanetary and in interstellar space, and in many different astrophysical objects. 2. Modern technology, economics, navigation, television, internet, radio, military aspects, and the life of people on our planet are strongly connected to the operating systems of many satellites moving inside the geomagnetosphere. Different processes and MCR in the geomagnetosphere influence the operating systems of many satellites and often cause complications, from mild satellite malfunctions to fully destroying their hardwiring. The described research can be considered as a basis for developing methods of forecasting dangerous situations for satellites in different orbits and to decrease the risk of satellite breakdowns. 3. The interaction of CME, ISW, and IIR with the geomagnetosphere leads to the generation of big magnetic storms and decreases precursory effects in Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) intensity. These magnetic storms are dangerous not only for satellites, but also on the Earth's surface for technology, radio connections, car accidents, and human health. Investigations of magnetic storm causes can help to develop methods of their forecasting and decreasing the level of magnetic storm hazards. Therefore, the other practical application of this research is connected with the problem of space weather influence on the technology, radio, navigation, transportation, and human health on the Earth independent of altitude and latitude. We hope that this book will be interesting and useful for researches, engineers, and students of corresponding specialties.

Book excerpt: Eight spacecraft have now visited the Jovian system and obtained a wealth of information about Jupiter's magnetosphere and aurora, both of which have proved to be very different from what we observe at the Earth. These differences are due in part to unique features such as large magnetospheric scale sizes, an internal plasma source from the moon Io, and a rapid planetary rotation period. These features have important influences on Jupiter's magnetosphere structure and dynamics, which are the focus of the three studies described in this dissertation. The first study is a survey of magnetometer data from the Jovian magnetotail to search for signatures of magnetic reconnection, an important dynamic process in planetary magnetospheres. Reconnection is thought to be predominantly internally driven at Jupiter. We have identified 249 reconnection events from the magnetometer data, and have analyzed their spatial distribution and periodicity to establish where and how often reconnection occurs at Jupiter. Results, including the location of a statistical separatrix, are compared to previous studies of flow bursts and particle anisotropies. The second study establishes a new model for relating auroral features to sources in the middle and outer magnetosphere. At Jupiter the polar aurora mapping is highly uncertain because global field models are inaccurate beyond ~30 Jovian radii. The open/closed field line boundary is also not well defined because Jupiter's main auroral emissions are associated with the breakdown of plasma corotation rather than the polar cap. Therefore our mapping model, which uses a flux equivalence calculation rather than tracing global models, provides a more precise mapping of the polar aurora and allows us to identify the size and location of Jupiter's polar cap. In the final study, we use a large scale kinetic simulation to examine the effects of centrifugal forces arising from Jupiter's rapid rotation and non-adiabatic field line stretching in the noon to dusk local time sector. We examine changes to the pitch angle and energy distributions and conclude that the changes arising from the non-adiabatic stretching effects could account for the field dipolarization and plasma sheet thickening observed between noon and dusk.
