Book STUDIES FOR A GEODETIC LASER SYSTEM

Download or read book STUDIES FOR A GEODETIC LASER SYSTEM written by Sumner Ackerman and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a brief summary of photoelectric (range) detection, photographic (direction) detection, and design studies made for a geodetic laser system. It appears feasible to measure the displacement between a ground-based (ruby) laser system and a satellite equipped with retrodirective reflector arrays (such as those on the Explorer and Geos satellites) to an accuracy of 2 arc-seconds in direction and less than 10 meters in range at slant ranges of over 2000 km, using essentially state-of-the-art equipment described herein and in the references. The probability of detection is expected to be greater than 90% without optical tracking, if the direction is known in advance to within approximately 2 arc-minutes and the range to within approximately 1 km. Book A Laser System for Satellite Geodesy

Download or read book A Laser System for Satellite Geodesy written by Robert L. Iliff and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel laser system designed and developed for satellite illumination is based on the use of two ruby lasers. It obtains range with a Q-switched laser and angular information by photographing satellite-reflected high-energy normal-mode laser pulses against stellar fields. The Q-switched laser system, operated in a controlled multipulse mode, is capable of up to 10 range measurements in a single pumping period. This increases confidence in the validity of the measurements especially since they are obtained in the presence of the high background noise that is encountered in daylight range measurements. The difference in satellite range within a 400-microsec time frame has been observed by means of the multipulse approach. (Author).

Book High Energy Laser System for Geodetic Research

Download or read book High Energy Laser System for Geodetic Research written by Sumner Ackerman and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design, operation, and performance of a high-energy laser system developed specifically for geodetic satellite research are described. The ground-based laser illuminator uses a liquid-N2-cooled 16-mm (diameter) by 184-mm (length) ruby crystal. It has a nominal output of 250 joules at 6935 A with 17,000 joules of pump supply and a pulse duration of 2.5 milliseconds. Discussion of the system's performance is based on 15 months of operating experience which has shown that high-energy lasers are practical for geodetic research applications requiring long periods of reliable operation under outdoor field conditions. The feasibility of Project LARGOS (Laser-Activated Reflecting Geodetic Optical Satellite), sponsored by the Terrestrial Sciences Laboratory of AFCRL, was verified experimentally using this equipment when clearly detectable star images of the Explorer 22 Satellite were obtained on 21 January, 29 January, and 3 February 1965 at ranges up to 925 statute miles. Range measurements by photoelectric detection were obtained simultaneously. A study was made of cube-corner reflectors suitable for satellite geodesy showing that, ideally, these should be almost diffraction limited with an aperture of the correct diameter to obtain the desired beamwidth.

Book Design Study of Advanced Geodetic Laser System

Download or read book Design Study of Advanced Geodetic Laser System written by Sumner Ackerman and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geodetic Laser System described herein is to generate two intense beams of radiant energy so that a portion reflected from an assembly of retrodirective reflectors on a satellite can produce a detectable and identifiable point image on a photographic plate and an unambiguous photoelectric voltage pulse. The photographic image, taken against a calibrated stellar background, will be used to measure the angular position of the satellite, and the photoelectric signal to measure its slant range. These measurements will be made almost simultaneously and together establish the vector displacement between the ground-based laser system and the satellite at the time of observation. The distance to the satellite is generally more than 1000 km. The desired accuracies of the angular and range measurements are to less than 2 arc-seconds and to less than 10 meters respectively. Multiple observations will be made in each orbital pass to enhance identification of the photographic image and collect more data. The requirements and specifications for all major system components are established so that a reasonable compromise between desired performance and costs will be achieved. Design is carried out in detail only to the point of assurance that technological state-of-the-art exists which is consistent with the system requirements and the specifications. (Author).

Book Evolving the Geodetic Infrastructure to Meet New Scientific Needs

Download or read book Evolving the Geodetic Infrastructure to Meet New Scientific Needs written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satellite remote sensing is the primary tool for measuring global changes in the land, ocean, biosphere, and atmosphere. Over the past three decades, active remote sensing technologies have enabled increasingly precise measurements of Earth processes, allowing new science questions to be asked and answered. As this measurement precision increases, so does the need for a precise geodetic infrastructure. Evolving the Geodetic Infrastructure to Meet New Scientific Needs summarizes progress in maintaining and improving the geodetic infrastructure and identifies improvements to meet new science needs that were laid out in the 2018 report Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space. Focusing on sea-level change, the terrestrial water cycle, geological hazards, weather and climate, and ecosystems, this study examines the specific aspects of the geodetic infrastructure that need to be maintained or improved to help answer the science questions being considered.
