Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Memories This country has to thank you and a friend of yours for a phrase which, conceived in merriment, has the ring of a very vital truth. If you had given it to the world before some of these papers were printed, perhaps I, in spite of my impetuous instincts, would have so far profited by it as to make this volume too small to find a publisher. As, however, you are chief instigator of their reappearance, I have a lingering hope that you are acting up to the life maxim which you formulated in the words, Wisdom while you wait.' As one of my oldest friends, I am sure that you have not advised me in the Biblical Spirit, which desires that the book should be the handiwork of an enemy. If you turn out wrong in your estimate of its value, I can only hope that it will be a lesson to you that (without your gracious permission) you are saddled, willy-nilly, with its dedication. Book Memories of the Months

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Months: Second Series IT is probably a mere philological accident, devoid of moral significance, that, in the whole of the English version of the Old and New Testaments, there is not a single instance of the use of the substantives enjoy ment' and 'happiness.' Frequent mention of 'joy' and 'pleasure, ' but the first seems to verge too closely upon the boisterous, or at least the exuberant, and the other to have become tainted too grossly in human handling to express precisely the sensation stirred by weather fair or foul, by noble landscape, by the every day operations of nature, and by communion, oral or literary, with higher intellects than our own. One derives pleasure from, and feels joy in, all such things, but they inspire something incapable of interpretation by either of these terms; something which the French denote by bonhewr, and we, in defiance of obvious etymology, by 'happiness.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memories and Studies William James Professor William James formed the intention shortly before his death of republishing a number of popular addresses and essays under the title which this book now bears; but unfortunately he found no opportunity to attend to any detail of the book himself, or to leave definite instructions for others. I believe, however, that I have departed in no substantial degree from my father's idea, except perhaps by including two or three short pieces which were first addressed to special occasions or audiences and which now seem clearly worthy of republication in their original form, although he might not have been willing to reprint them himself without the recasting, to which he was ever most attentive when preparing for new readers. Everything in this volume has already appeared in print in magazines or otherwise and definite acknowledgements are hereinafter made in the appropriate places. Comparison with the original texts will disclose slight variations in a few passages, and it is therefore proper to explain that in these passages the present text follows emendations of the original which have survived in the author's own handwriting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Months I feel inclined to ask the printer to use red ink for the introduction to this volume, as serving to indicate how I blush at my temerity in laying before a too indulgent public a fifth bundle of these desultory notes. Nobody can be more conscious than myself of their ephemeral quality; but the public has itself to blame, if blame there be, because of the encouragement it has shown me to give a more or less permanent form to fleeting impressions, and to prose about matters one cannot but notice in moving through our beautiful land. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Tamil poetic corpus of the Caṅam ("The Academy") is a national treasure for Tamilians and a battle-ground for linguists and historians of politics, culture and literature. Going back to oral predecessors probably dating back to the beginning of the first millennium, it has had an extremely rich and variegated history. Collected into anthologies and endowed with literary theories and voluminous commentaries, it became the centre-piece of the Tamil literary canon, associated with the royal court of the Pandya dynasty in Madurai. Its decline began in the late middle ages, and by the late 17th century it had fallen into near oblivion, before being rediscovered at the beginning of the print era. The present study traces the complex historical process of its transmission over some 2000 years, using and documenting a wide range of sources, in particular surviving manuscripts, the early prints, the commentaries of the literary and grammatical traditions and a vast range of later literature that creates a web of inter-textual references and quotations.

Book Scenes and Memories Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scenes and Memories Classic Reprint written by Walburga Lady Paget and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes and Memories My Dear Children, The impressions gathered together in this book, though written most of them in this last decade, are all of them taken from very voluminous recollections jotted down at a much earlier period. If one day any of you think it worth while to publish these wider recollections, they will give a true picture of the world as it has appeared to me; for it has, throughout, been my aim to give an exact representation of my impressions of events, things, and people. That will be their only merit. I must explain, however, that the last chapter of this book, 'The Mysterious City, ' which has never been published, is a fantasy written to please a friend long since passed away, by collating records about some very interesting but unknown villas around Florence of which he had taken the photographs. The events I allude to are all true, and most of them I witnessed myself during my frequent and long sojourns in the Mysterious City; it will, however, be readily understood that names could not be given, though many of them will easily be guessed by those who knew the Florence of that day. Book Historical Studies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Studies Classic Reprint written by George Washington Greene and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Studies I can offer no better apology for the republication of the following papers than that there are some things in them which I wished to preserve; and in thus grouping them together under the name of Historical Studies, I have given them the title which seemed best suited to their nature and their origin. They are a record, too, of pleasant hours, and of studies to which I had fondly looked for fuller and better results. The extensive plans which I had once formed for a history of Italy may, perhaps, never be accomplished. The partial loss of sight and the want of books are serious obstacles in an undertaking which requires a full command of both. But though I would not willingly renounce my hopes of the future, yet with such reasons for looking towards it doubtfully, I may not, perhaps, be held altogether inexcusable for clinging so tenaciously to the past. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in General History In teaching history in higher grades, three points must always be in mind: first, to give each student independent work; next, to subject the results of solitary, individual thought to the freest criticism and discussion in the class-room; last of all, the accepted results of the collective labor must be arranged in compact and logical order, and stowed away in memory. By the' solitary study of the individual, the mind gains power and originality; by the free lance in a free field of class-room work, the mind gains courage, sharpness, speed, and generous temper; by the strict, close sifting of study and discussion, it gains concentration, clearness, and breadth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Memories My dear Charles Graves, - Having adopted your suggestion that I should reprint some papers, biographical and critical, which I have contributed to various periodicals during the last twenty-five years, I speedily found myself in the position rather of a critic than of an author. With the personal notices, consisting mainly of matters of fact, I had not much fault to find; with the critical it was far otherwise. For a man's opinions vary in a quarter of a century as do his bodily tissues, and upon many points I found myself as editor at loggerheads with myself as writer. I hold, however, that a collection of this sort, if it is to have any value at all, must be a genuine reprint, and not a Bowdlerised or sterilised version of the original. Such freshness as comes from the pen of a writer who is keen at the moment of carrying out his task, is lost in any process of cool and calculating reconsideration, and therefore I have left them alone (misprints and glaringly bad grammar excepted) in their original sin, such severity as is in them uneliminated, and such immature and hasty judgments as crop up at intervals uncorrected by later experience. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Virginibus Puerisque" And Other Papers; Memories and Portraits; Familiar Studies of Men and Books We are all busy in this world building Towers of Babel; and the child of our imaginations is always a Changeling when it comes from nurse. This is not only true in the greatest, as of wars and folios, but in the least also, like the trifling volume in your hand. Thus I began to write these papers with a defi nite end: I was to be the Advocatus, not I hope Diaboli, but Juventutis, ' I was to state temperately the beliefs of youth as Opposed to the contentions of age; to go over all the field where the two differ, and produce at last a little volume of special pleadings, which I might call, without misnomer, Life at Twenty five. But times kept changing, and I shared in the change. I clung hard to that entrancing age; but, with the best will, no man can be twenty-five forever. The old, ruddy convictions deserted me, and, along with them, the style that fits their presentation and defence. I saw, and indeed my friends in formed me, that the game was up. A good part Of the volume would answer to the long-projected title; but the shadows Of the prison-house are on the rest.
