Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies About the Kathasaritsagara In days of yore, when Civa, the Lord of the Universe, was alone with his beloved wife, the daughter of Himavant, and caressed her, she asked him to tell her some charming new tale. For Indian gods and goddesses are as fond of tales as Indian men and women. The Supreme God, however reluctantly and after an unsuccessful expedient to acquit himself with little, entered upon a story of immense length and of an extraordinary charm. Parvati wishing to keep the whole of the pleasure to be procured by that wonderful catena of tales to herself, shut the door and ordered Nandin, Civa's bull, to withhold any person whatsoever from coming in. In the meanwhile one of Civa's most beloved Ganas, Puspadanta his name, went on to see his master. Being forbidden the entrance, he succeeded by dint of magic power to penetrate unseen within the presence of Civa and Parvati and to overhear that new and delightful story about the seven sovereigns of the Air-spirits (Vidyadharas). Full as he was of the great tale he had heard, he afterwards narrated it to his own wife Java; for who can hide wealth or a secret from women? She again told it over to her mistress, the wife of Civa, for how can women be expected to restrain their speech? So it happened that Parvati knew the disclosure of the Great Narration notwithstanding the precautions taken to keep it secret, and in her wrath she cursed the indiscreet Gana to be born as a man. Malyavant, another Gana, who interceded for his guilty friend, was in a similar manner damned to a human existence. She fixed, however, a limit to the punishment. Book excerpt: Folklore Studies in India: Critical Regional Responses is an interesting compilation of twenty-eight critical articles on the beginning of folklore studies in the different parts of India. In the absence of a book that could map the history of Indian folklore studies single-handedly, this book can be deemed as the first-of-its-kind to feature the historical development of folklore studies in the different states of India. This book succinctly introduces the readers to the folk culture, folk arts, and folk genres of a particular region and to the different aspects of folkloristic researches carried out in that region.

Book The Fall of the Indigo Jackal

Download or read book The Fall of the Indigo Jackal written by McComas Taylor and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every child growing up in India knows the story of the jackal who fell into the vat of blue dye, and discovering the power of his majestic new appearance, declared himself king of the forest. In spite of his pretenses, the jackal, eventually betrayed by his own instincts, was set upon by the other animals. This and many similar narratives are found in the Pañcatantra, the collection of Sanskrit tales for children compiled by a Jaina monk named Pūrṇabhadra in 1199 CE. In this book, McComas Taylor looks at the discourses that give shape and structure to the fall of the indigo jackal and the other tales within the Pañcatantra. The work's fictional metasociety of animals, kings, and laundrymen are divided according to their jāti, or "kind." This discourse of caste holds that individuals' essential natures, statuses, and social circles are all determined by their birth. Taylor applies contemporary critical theory developed by Foucault, Bourdieu, Barthes, and others to show how these ideas are related to other Sanskritic master-texts, and describes the "regime of truth" that provides validation for the discourse of division.

Download or read book Plunging the Ocean written by Tara Sheemar Malhan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plunging the Ocean engages with the voluminous content of the Kathāsaritsāgara, a text meant for courtly entertainment, locating the various points of its retelling. The volume weaves gender as the discursive mesh with various themes such as caste, class, occupations, control and flow of resources or wealth, religious practices, sexuality and power structures to highlight the discourse of the text itself. In their creation and negotiation with the past, the narratives are seen as crucially demonstrating the importance of 'social space'; in the organization of space itself and in the reflection of social relations of production and reproduction. The conclusion highlights the contradictions inherent in the characters and plots, in the folk antecedents and monarchical elite appropriation of the kathās, in conformity and subversion. The structures of power that create systems of knowledge are essentially projected as ominously omnipresent in the 'Ocean of Stories'.
