Book excerpt: On 10 April 2010, Polish President Lech Kaczyński and First Lady Maria Kaczyńska were killed in an airplane crash outside the city of Smolensk in western Russia, where they were flying to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Soviet massacre of over twenty-one thousand Polish prisoners during the Second World War. Eight days later, the president and his wife were laid to rest beneath the Krakow Cathedral on Wawel Hill, an ancient necropolis of Polish kings and queens and the most prestigious burial site in all of Poland, where only six other meritorious, non-royal national figures have been enshrined since the demise of the Polish monarchy in the late eighteenth century. The decision to bury Lech and Maria Kaczyński in Poland’s highest national pantheon sparked an emotional debate about its symbolic appropriateness and underscored the question of how such burial decisions are actually made. It also raised a whole host of questions about the historical significance and pantheonic function of Wawel—the “bedrock of sacred memory for the Polish nation,” as Stanisław Staszic put it in the early nineteenth century—in modern Polish consciousness. Until now, these questions have received surprisingly little attention beyond Polish historians of Krakow. Here All Is Poland excavates and builds upon the extant scholarly discourse of Wawel to plot the evolution of a pantheonic funeral tradition over two hundred years, thus providing a context and a clue for interpreting the historical significance of the 2010 burial.

Book excerpt: Author of statues in the major churches of Padua and Venice, Giammaria Mosca was among the leading sculptors in northern Italy during the second and third decades of the sixteenth century. In 1529 Mosca was summoned by the King of Poland to erect his tomb in Cracow. From 1533 until the artist's death in 1574, documents at regular intervals record important commissions to Mosca throughout Poland from the Polish royal family, as well as from prominent members of the nobility and ecclesiastical hierarchy. Many of Mosca's inscribed and documented monuments survive in their original site and state and testify to the sculptor's key role in the diffusion in Eastern Europe of Italian Renaissance ideals. In both native and adoptive homes, thus, there exists a substantial body of extant and documented works by Mosca; indeed, Mosca is virtually unique among &émigr&é Renaissance sculptors for the completeness with which both halves of his career are documented and therefore offers the perfect test case for assessing the effect of emigration from the center to the periphery. Yet no one has ever asked whether Mosca's move to Poland changed his art. For the first time, Anne Markham Schulz not only explores the effect on Mosca's art of new patrons and materials, of different artistic conventions, functions, and traditions, but also sets Mosca's emigration within the context of those cultural exchanges between Italy and Poland that contributed fundamentally to the formation of the Polish Renaissance. This book represents the first comprehensive study of Giammaria Mosca in any language. It includes more than 260 detail photographs of all of Mosca's sculptures; almost every one has been made anew, many from specially constructed scaffolds. In addition, another 109 photographs illustrate comparative works. All documents concerning the artist, most never published before and many quite unknown, are reproduced in their entirety. There is an exhaustive catalogue of all works attributed to Mosca or his shop and a comprehensive bibliography of scholarship in ten languages.

Royal prince, bishop of Kraków, Polish primate, cardinal, regent and brother to the rulers of Hungary, Poland, Bohemia and Lithuania, Fryderyk was a leading dynastic politician, diplomat, ecclesiastic and cultural patron, and a pivotal figure in three Polish royal governments. Last Judgment Iconography in the Carpathians examines images of the last judgment from the fifteenth century to the present in the Carpathian mountain region of Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, and Romania, as a way to consider history free from the traditional frameworks and narratives of nations. Over ten years, John-Paul Himka studied last-judgment images throughout the Carpathians and found a distinctive and transnational blending of Gothic, Byzantine, and Novgorodian art in the region. Chapters examine the organization of the artistic workshop (sculpting and masonry) and the model of the artist’s functioning as an entrepreneur in Renaissance Poland, using Santi Gucci’s activity as an example. Gucci shaped the image of Polish sculpture in the sixteenth century for more than 50 years, even though his work has not yet been fully examined. The author sets Gucci’s emigration within the context of the cultural exchanges between Italy and Poland that contributed to the development of the Polish Renaissance. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, Renaissance studies, architectural history and economic history.
