Book The Perceptions and Understandings of Advisory by Middle School Students Included in the Curriculum Revision Process

This book was released on 2016 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During early adolescence, children experience development in four major areas: physical, cognitive, social-emotional, and sensory-motor. As a result of all of these simultaneous changes, the middle school years are often considered the most turbulent developmental years of adolescence and have a profound impact on teaching and learning. The middle school concept embraces the uniqueness of adolescence and provides a model for addressing the needs of middle school students. Three preeminent educational reform initiatives, Turning Points 2000, This We Believe (2003), and Breaking Ranks in the Middle (2006), addressed the challenge of meeting the needs of adolescents by recommending beliefs, practices, characteristics, and strategies specifically focused on the middle school student. One area of prominence in these reform documents is personalized learning, which includes the implementation of advisory programs in the middle school. Advisory programs are driven by the primary purpose of ensuring each child is well known by at least one adult. Studies have shown that schools have a difficult time planning, implementing, and sustaining this element of the middle school concept. The focus of this qualitative study was to investigate middle school students' perceptions and understandings of advisory as a means to utilize the insight gained to improve the advisory program at the researcher's school and to provide other middle schools with pertinent data to support their programs. Through a phenomenological approach, the researcher sought to derive meaning from an experience as described by the individuals who have experienced it.

Book Advisory based Perceptions of Transition and Connectedness by First year Middle School Students

Download or read book Advisory based Perceptions of Transition and Connectedness by First year Middle School Students written by Ramona Raines Pence and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research-based study was to identify first- year middle school students’ perceptions of the influences of a teacher advisory (TA) program on their transition concerns and connectedness with a teacher before and after their first nine weeks in the middle school. The transition from elementary school to middle school can be difficult for students due to the structural and cultural changes in the middle school organization and the adolescent development that occurs. The use of an advisory group led by a teacher to assist in this transition and connectedness is a program that was the subject of this study. Student perceptions were obtained from quantitative results from a pre-and post-survey and then followed up with qualitative findings from focus group protocol to explore the quantitative results in more depth. The main research question explored was: What are advisory-based students’ perceptions of transition and connectedness in their first-year of middle school? Supporting questions were: To what extent do perceptions of transition concerns and connectedness with a teacher change before and after students enter the middle school? What, if any, gender, age, ethnicity, and feeder school attendance demographic differences exist in these perceptions? What, if any, differences exist between advisory and non-advisory students’ perceptions on their transition concerns and connectedness? The conclusions from the quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed that at the end of nine weeks in the middle school: 1) Transition concerns decreased for both advisory and non-advisory students; 2) Connectedness with a teacher decreased for both advisory and non-advisory students with a higher connectedness for advisory students than non-advisory students; 3) Advisory students expressed a more positive view of advisory teachers than non-advisory students expressed of homeroom teachers; 4) Advisory students overall had a positive perception of the TA program and the TA teacher despite a decrease in connectedness. Implications and recommendations for education personnel are provided.

Book School Advisory Programs Impact on the Student teacher Relationship

Download or read book School Advisory Programs Impact on the Student teacher Relationship written by Robert R. Ruch and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to discover teacher and student perceptions related to the effectiveness of planned activities and instruction as well as to determine the impact that advisory programs have on improving the effectiveness of the student-teacher relationship. The participants were middle school students as well as teachers of grades 6, 7, and 8 in a large, suburban middle school in a school district in southeastern Pennsylvania. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 75 middle school teachers who completed the online survey and 82 seventh and eighth grade students who completed the online survey. The researcher also interviewed 13 teachers and eight students and completed focus groups with a total of 32 students to further assess the teacher and student feelings related to the advisory period. Results of the study indicated over 80% of both groups, teachers and students, believed the advisory period is helpful in strengthening the student-teacher relationship. The advisory teachers viewed themselves and were viewed by students as adults who advisees can count on in the school. There was some differentiation between the perspectives of the students and the teachers in what made advisory effective. There was a large difference between the perspectives of the seventh grade students and the eighth grade students. The majority of eighth graders primarily viewed the advisory time as a time to get work done while most seventh graders viewed this allotted as a time to make connections with each other and the advisory teacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advisory groups have played an essential role in improving the school climate and conditions for young adolescents in schools. How middle school decision makers go about the process of designing or re-designing an advisory program needs to be considered. A discussion is presented of the background information that helps define advisories. It describes some essential elements in the design of an advisory program, proposes strategies for planners to use in facilitating decision making, and explores possible future directions and alternative strategies for achieving the goals of advisory programs. Chapter 1 looks at the impetus and chronology of advisory programs. Chapter 2 presents a nomenclature to facilitate a discussion about advisory programs. The decision-making process described in Chapter 3 presents a card-sorting activity that allows the planner to articulate their preconceived notions about potential goals, activities, and outcomes of an advisory program. Chapter 4 suggests that students' need for personal and social guidance may be addressed in ways other than what has traditionally been called advisor/advisee. Considering alternative ways can enhance the processes of planning, collaborative decision making, and creative construction that can be the key to success for a program. (Contains 103 references.) Book excerpt: This comprehensive investigation on middle school advising was chiefly concerned with assessing and improving an advising program at a Seattle independent school. For the purose of gathering background information, the directors of six advising programs in the region were interviewed. Of primary interest was the history of each program's evolution, the prevailing program priorities, and the common expectations of advisors. Following these interviews, a detailed review of the focal advisory program was conducted. Meetings were held with the advisors of each grade level at a fifth through eighth grade middle school. These meetings were designed to ascertain developmental trends, isolate student needs, and determine advisory program priorities. The grade level workshops were followed by eight advisory group observations, eight interviews with advisors, and eight interviews with advisees. Finally, over 350 electronic surveys were conducted of families, advisors, and advisees. The interviews with program directors of other schools revealed a variety of program structures, styles, and priorities. The most common priorities of all programs were academic advocacy and community building. The interviews, observations, and surveys of the focal school revealed these same trends for priorities, and the survey data revealed that most constituents have a common understanding of what the advisor's role should be. While the data revealed that the majority of constituents are pleased with the advising at this school, there were dominant perceptions about what might improve overall program effectiveness. Some of the recommendations include establishing clear expectations, refining program purpose, improving program marketing, increasing advisor training, and providing advisors with ample tools for helping them manage unstructured time. The discussion includes the final summary of recommendations gleaned from the inquiry and the initial literature review.
