Book excerpt: Academic advising on American college and university campuses has evolved into a professional activity supported by a growing body of theory and research. Developmental psychology provided the foundation for an approach to advising that emphasizes an holistic view of the student by supplementing traditional advising functions with career and personal counseling, decision-making strategies, and a personal relationship between the student and advisor. The majority of advising literature assumes that developmental advising can meet the needs of most students in every postsecondary setting. The purpose of this study was to discover whether this is the case for community college students. Subjects in two Pacific Northwest community colleges were surveyed using an instrument derived from Winston and Sandor's (1984c) Academic Advising Inventory. The instrument discriminated between prescriptive and developmental advising and measured the degree of satisfaction expressed by students in a variety of demographic categories. The study found that most students who received advising indicated that it was essentially developmental in nature and that they were generally satisfied. No significant differences were found in the style of advising (prescriptive or developmental) or in the level of satisfaction expressed by students in a variety of demographic variables. Significant differences were found both in the style of advising and in satisfaction based on the format or settings in which the advising took place. The highest level of satisfaction was associated with an assigned advisor in an advising center. Students who were advised by peers experienced the most developmental service, but they were a very small proportion (N=5) of the overall sample, causing the results on this dimension to be inconclusive. These results suggest that for community college students, the format of advising may be as important as the developmental or prescriptive style of advising. The finding that 29% of the study subjects received no advising underscores the issue of access and perceived need for advising. Of this group, minorities and students who were enrolled for less than six credits were not being advised at higher rates than other student groups.

Book excerpt: This research study examined student perceptions of advisement experiences with a primary role advisor in a centralized advising office. The intent was to explore the connection between academic advising and student connectedness to the institution. This study utilized Tinto's theory of student departure to provide an understanding of how student success can be impacted by institutional relationships, particularly in a community college environment. Tinto asserted that a student's decision to stay or depart from an institution was largely impacted by interactions and relationships between the student and other members of the institution (Tinto, 1975). This study aimed to explore students' perceptions of effective advising strategies and barriers, which may have contributed to their retention and persistence. This study utilized a qualitative case study approach, guided by three research questions. Data collected consisted of observations, interviews, and artifacts. Data analysis explored thematic connections linking student advising and student support experiences to overall institutional connectedness. The findings of this study can be used to inform future decision making about the delivery of advising services, specifically focusing on the needs of community college students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions and development of community college students as they navigate stigmas associated with a 2-year collegiate institution within the mid-Atlantic region. Community colleges continue to be labeled as a disservice in regard to academically and holistically preparing nontraditional students to matriculate to 4-year institutions. This persistent myth has been presented through the lens of prominent researchers. However, the literature lacks research from the perception, experiences, and most importantly the voice of the nontraditional student. This study enables this marginalized population to be heard through a phenomenological approach. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of urban community college students and how they are able to navigate through trials/tribulations and extenuating circumstances to obtain an associate's degree. More specifically, this study focused on eight student-athletes and examined these nontraditional students' holistic and wellness development, personal and academic development, and self-identity.

By applying phenomenological methodology within an engaged inquiry framework, this study integrates multiple perspectives into a narrative thread to make sense of students' experiences with placement and the prospect of remediation. Book excerpt: A student’s sense of belonging on campus is critical to their success in college (Strayhorn, 2018). Finding a sense of place can affect a student’s academic adjustment, achievement, or persistence at that institution (Strayhorn, 2018). Research suggests that a sense of belonging in college and a feeling of connection to the campus community are extremely important in terms of students’ well-being and performance (Tinto, 1993, 2001). Academic advisors are uniquely positioned to understand not only the structural elements of student success but also the contextual ones (Troxel, 2019). Although there are many programs and services within a campus community that ensure student retention and success, academic advising has always played an integral role in supporting students (Zhang et al., 2019). Thus, the purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand how students ascribe meaning to the role of academic advising in their search for a sense of belonging on campus, guided by an overarching research question: What is the role of academic advising in a student’s lived experience of developing a sense of belonging on campus? Three data sources supported this exploration: 1) interviews with former students (N=11), 2) debriefing reflections (N=11), and 3) campus messaging documents (N=22), which were designed to acculturate students to college. Interview and reflective data analysis applied Boyatzis’ thematic analysis strategy (1998), and Bowen’s (2009) content analysis strategy supported document analysis. Five themes emerged from the findings of this study: 1) “I thought I knew the kind of school I was looking for”, 2) “I am growing up with these people in this strange new place”, 3) “Me, becoming my best self through struggle and triumph”, 4) “I trusted her and she accepted my vulnerability”, and 5) “A powerful experience I will never forget”. By exploring the lived experiences of these former students, new approaches to academic advising may be uncovered. These approaches may facilitate a deeper, more personalized relationship between student and advisor to enrich a student’s sense of belonging in college, ensuring their academic and personal success through graduation.

Book excerpt: Nationally, an increasing number of underprepared students are enrolling in community colleges, and as a result, the enrollment of at-risk students in Developmental Education programs has soared. Community colleges have undergone much criticism for their lengthy college preparatory programs. Often, these programs require students with low placement test scores to endure many semesters of foundational coursework before they can progress to transferrable academic-level study. Severely at-risk students often give up and drop out. States across the country have begun to scrutinize Developmental Education programs, charging community colleges with the task of developing accelerated curriculum models to move students more quickly through college preparatory coursework. The Southeast Texas community college in this study redesigned two levels of existing standalone developmental reading and writing courses into a two-level integrated reading and writing curriculum, which cut the time to completion in half. This qualitative comparative analysis case study examined the perceptions of top and mid-level administrators, college preparatory reading and writing faculty, and academic advising staff, who were involved in the development and/or implementation of the course redesign. This examination was framed in Kotter's Change Management Theory, Knowles' Adult Learning Theory, and Rosenblatt's Transactional Theory. Four major themes resulted from this study: impetus of change, commitment to student success, trust and confidence, and collective collaboration.
