Book Students Attitudes and Intentions of Using Technology Such as Virtual Reality for Learning about Climate Change and Protecting Endangered Environments

Download or read book Students Attitudes and Intentions of Using Technology Such as Virtual Reality for Learning about Climate Change and Protecting Endangered Environments written by Kristina Adanin and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the world is facing a range of significant challenges, including a rise in air temperature, rapidly evolving droughts in some areas, and floods, new technology in education can help inform people of current issues that may not be close to them but, nevertheless, can have a significant impact in the future. Our planet has been warming steadily for over a century, and the preponderance of evidence has pointed at human action as the main contributor to the change (Hansen et al., 2010). The evolution of technology has brought tremendous change. Virtual Reality (VR), 360-degree video, has the potential to bring the environment to the students since it can provide a close to a real-life situation. The use of VR for educational purposes has been quite unknown to most school systems. There are many gaps that need to be investigated prior to the effective implementation of VR-learning, such as the factors that influence students' intention to use it. This study fulfilled some of these gaps by focusing on the potential of using VR for future education and raising awareness of the climate change occurring in remote areas, specifically tropical regions. The findings of this study will hopefully encourage students to play a more responsible role in the development and implementation of VR education worldwide and help enhance the academic quality of courses for instructors and students. This study examined students' behavioral intentions towards using VR in their learning about climate change utilizing the Technology Acceptance Model of Davis (1989), combined with the spatial presence experience scale (Hartmann et al., 2015). Phase 1 was created in order to understand students' salient beliefs about the use of VR for educational purposes and learning about climate change. Furthermore, 65 students participated in this phase and reported that VR can be beneficial for educational purposes to learn about global climate change, and 95.2% of participants fully agreed. Phase 2 occurred among 227 students from around the globe.

Book Nurturing Nature in Virtual Reality

Download or read book Nurturing Nature in Virtual Reality written by Christopher Ball and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of human intervention on the environment are numerous and increasingly devastating. Many species of animals have become endangered due to environmental changes and an encroachment on their natural habitats. Unfortunately, research indicates that it can be difficult to keep people informed and actively engaged with environmental issues. In the United States, a common method to keep the public informed and engaged with environmental issues are public service announcements (PSAs). However, some research indicates that PSAs may not be as effective with millennial viewers in a modern day multi-media landscape. Recent studies have indicated that virtual reality (VR) may provide an effective means of engaging the public via public service experiences (PSEs). The present study builds and expands upon the PSE literature by continuing to explore possible mechanisms, and their relation to one another, that may account for PSE effects. Furthermore, this study fills a gap in the literature related to gradient manipulations of immersive factors. Additionally, this study also makes a contribution to the literature by examining the concepts of natural mapping and narrative interactivity from two distinct perspectives. Specifically, natural mapping is examined along naturalness and intuitiveness dimensions while narrative interactivity is examined along technical and content interactivity dimensions. Finally, this study seeks to explore the possibility that pro-environmental PSE's might have the ability to activate other associated environmental attitudes. In order to explore the above questions, an experiment was conducted which tested the potential impacts of narrative interactivity and naturally mapped movement in a PSE. The experiment was a between-subjects factorial design. Specifically, the experiment was a 2 (high and low narrative interactivity) x 3 (low, medium, and high natural mapping) factorial design. The sample for this study consisted of 183 undergraduate college students obtained from a large mid-western university in the United States. The experiment involved exposing participants to approximately a 10-minute virtual experience/environment which includes endangered wildlife, such as elephants. Naturally mapped locomotion and narrative interactivity should be considered a multi-dimensional concept with both naturalness and intuitiveness sub-constructs and technical and content sub-constructs respectively. In this case, perceived locomotion intuitiveness was a statistically significant predictor of participants' feelings of spatial presence while perceived locomotion naturalness was not. Similarly, perceived content interactivity was a statistically significant predictor of participants' feelings of narrative transportation while perceived technical interactivity was not. Spatial presence and narrative transportation then served as a mediators between natural mapping/narrative interactivity and participants' pro-environmental attitudes and behavioral intentions. This study makes both theoretical and practical contributions to the literature. Theoretically, both natural mapping and narrative interactivity should be considered multi-dimensional constructs which have implications for the formation of spatial presence and narrative transportation. Practically, designers of PSEs should consider the importance of making locomotion more intuitive rather than more natural while emphasizing users' ability to interact with virtual stories rather than just virtual environments.

Book The Influence of System Immersion on Carbon Footprint Reduction Learning and Behavior Outcomes

Download or read book The Influence of System Immersion on Carbon Footprint Reduction Learning and Behavior Outcomes written by Anita Lee Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of increasing weather extremes, it is important to understand how best to encourage pro-environmental behaviors related to climate change risk mitigation. Protection Motivation Theory offers insight into the factors most relevant to addressing environmental threats. Experiential learning provides insight into how immersive technology may impact learning outcomes. Other factors are known to influence learning and behavior in this context, including the technology adopted to create and consume learning materials about climate change. To explore the impact of system immersion, the current study relied on two distinct treatment groups, one relying on a laptop with a flat screen to consume the instructional media and one relying on a virtual reality headset to consume the instructional media. Neither treatment group showed significant improvements in the learning outcomes under investigation: knowledge recall of climate change risk mitigation behaviors or perception of learning effectiveness. The study results indicate consuming the media through a flat screen is effective for improving a learner's threat and coping appraisal, though not effective for improving the intention to adopt risk mitigation behaviors. The VR headset did not appear effective at improving either of these behavior outcomes. The study results suggest 360° microlearning content is most effective for encouraging behavior changes when viewed on a flat screen. Yet small effect sizes and low statistical power indicate the results are not reliable and further research is needed to define the relationships and impacts of the factors under review in this study. Open science protocols, including consistent definitions, measures, and analysis tools, can ensure future research is comparable to the current study and the body of knowledge for immersive learning technologies is built on a solid foundation.

Book Dialogue s Impact on Behavior and Attitude Towards Climate Change

Download or read book Dialogue s Impact on Behavior and Attitude Towards Climate Change written by Jonathan Mccausland and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the world is faced with many dilemmas. Climate change is one controversy which has polarized many people. In an effort to find new ways to explore what students at Penn State are thinking about climate change, World in Conversation: Center for Public Diplomacy designed a new initiative around it. This initiative does not push any one agenda within the conversation and gives students the opportunity to communicate what they believe and challenge the beliefs of other students. In order to look at the impact of these conversations, a qualitative study was performed focusing on behavioral and attitude changes. Through survey data and a collection of personal interviews, students depict the impact of the experience. The results of this study challenge conventional learning environments and provide another tool for teachers to explore what knowledge and beliefs their students have. In addition, it illustrates the ability of conversation to change the way people interact with world problems in their everyday lives.

Book Does Knowledge Matter An Investigation of the Relationship Between Mental Models of Climate Change and Proenvironmental Behaviors

Download or read book Does Knowledge Matter An Investigation of the Relationship Between Mental Models of Climate Change and Proenvironmental Behaviors written by Rebecah Dawn Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of the myriad environmental challenges that humans face as a result of global change, citizens will increasingly be expected to understand complex phenomena such as climate change. Decisions such as individual behavior choices, voting, and activism are related to understanding these issues. This study addresses the question of how an educated citizenry might adapt to evolving public information as scientists refine their own understanding and predictions about global change. This dissertation describes an investigation of mental models of climate change and their relationship to proenvironmental behaviors. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that behaving in an environmentally responsible manner involves an understanding of the phenomenon, in this case, climate change; holding proenvironmental attitudes, which orient an individual towards a normative goal frame; and receiving situational cues that strengthen the normative goal frame. This study tests these hypotheses by measuring mental models of climate change, beliefs about climate change, attitudes towards climate change and behavioral intentions in one study and then manipulating situational cues in an experimental decision-making setting in another. The study incorporates both correlational and experimental designs. Correlational data comprised responses from US adults on three instruments: mental models of climate change, beliefs about and attitudes towards climate change, and proenvironmental behaviors. Patterns of correlations for mental models, beliefs/attitudes, and self-reported behaviors were analyzed and multiple regression analysis were employed to fit models to the data. For the experimental design, individuals were randomly presented with one of three environmental messages and asked their willingness to engage in actions to address climate change. Logistic regression analysis was employed to model relationship between mental models, attitudes, and experimental condition on behavioral intentions. Both main effects and interactions were analyzed. With both self-reported behaviors and behavioral intentions as dependent variables, mental model scores were not independently predictive of proenvironmental behaviors. The beliefs/attitudes survey yielded three scores that were independently predictive of proenvironmental behaviors: the belief that climate change is caused by humans, the belief that there is evidence climate change is happening, and attitudes towards climate change. The main experimental intervention in this study, environmental messaging, did not result in any meaningful differences in willingness to engage in actions to address climate change. Attitudes were the only main effect predictive of proenvironmental behavioral intentions, yet none of the interactions with attitudes were statistically significant. The interaction of mental models and messaging was statistically significant. The results of this study show a relationship between education and behavior. There was no teaching intervention or data collected about formal and informal learning experiences related to climate change so little can be said about what types of education are most effective, but the data suggests that knowledge affects responsiveness to situational cues that impact behavioral decisions.
