Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In dental education, the clinic is the learning environment that requires students to transfer knowledge from the basic sciences and utilize it to render safe and efficient patient care. The effectiveness of teaching and learning in the clinical learning environment and how it prepares dental students to independently provide patient care is a central concern for dental education. The underlying theory in this study was to describe how teacher effectiveness influences students in the clinical learning environment and impacts patient care. There is growing awareness that students' responses to and views of their educational experiences are important to shaping and modifying the educational process. The primary purpose of this study was to describe the instructional practices among clinical dental educators as they pertain to student and patient involvement. The secondary purpose was to describe the interactions between the teacher, student, and patient during clinical teaching. The study examined the students' and patients' perspectives of the dental clinical teaching environment. Utilizing participant observation, this study focused on the oral health care educator-patient-student triad and the learning experience in comprehensive oral health care. Methods of data collection included unobtrusive observations of interactions between oral health care educators, patients, and students, and patient and student interviews.

Institutions engage in QA activities to direct spending to the areas that contribute to quality improvement and present to stakeholders evidence of the effectiveness and quality of their programmes. Dental schools are particularly pressured to demonstrate QA efforts to meet accreditation standards and ensure the quality of patient care. This study presents a quality assessment conducted at a school of dentistry in a developing country. A mixed methods approach is used to seek input from patients, students and faculty members to evaluate the quality of the clinical teaching offered in the pre-doctoral programme. Students and patients completed service quality assessment surveys that are adapted from the SERVPERF model. A focus group and one-on-one interviews were held to seek input from faculty members. Analysis of the data shows that the patients are generally more satisfied with the services than the students or faculty. The main issues that have been identified by stakeholders to negatively influence the quality of the learning experience and the quality of services provided are: (1) The expansion of the facilities is disproportionate with the growing numbers of students, (2) lack of comprehensive approach to patient care, and (3) the difficulty in patient recruitment and retention. The findings of this study will advise the decision makers at the school in their planning for curriculum and process reviews, QA efforts and development plans. The surveys that have been used in this study could be used to routinely collect data on patients' and students' satisfaction; however, further testing of the instruments is advised. Book excerpt: Surgical Education: Theorising an Emerging Domain delineates surgical (as opposed to medical) education as a new and emerging field of academic enquiry. This reflects profound changes in healthcare training and practice on an international basis. As such, this book introduces, examines and explores the contribution of selected concepts and theories to surgical learning and practice. The first four chapters consider core facets of surgical education, such as simulation, while subsequent chapters take a key idea, often well known in another field, and examine its relevance to surgical education. Of course, performing invasive procedures is no longer the exclusive preserve of ‘traditional’ surgeons. Boundaries between surgery and the interventional specialties (radiology, cardiology, intensive care) are becoming increasingly blurred, especially as technology continues to expand. Changing work patterns and explosive technological development mark this out as a major growth area. New educational approaches (e.g. the use of simulation) are emerging. And all clinical practice is a team activity, where clinicians from many specialties (medicine, nursing, allied professions) come together with shared goals. For all the above groups, and their patients, education (teaching, training, learning and assessment) is of crucial importance. Yet the unique characteristics of surgical education have not previously been addressed from an educational perspective, nor have its possibilities as a new research domain been mapped. The domain needs to be theorised and its epistemological foundations established. There is thus both a need and a market for a definitive work in this area, aimed at surgeons, other clinicians, non-clinicians, educators, and others interested in this new domain.
