Book excerpt: The surprising effects of American TV on global viewers As a dominant cultural export, American television is often the first exposure to American ideals and the English language for many people throughout the world. Yet, American television is flawed, and, it represents race, class, and gender in ways that many find unfair and unrealistic. What happens, then, when people who grew up on American television decide to come to the United States? What do they expect to find, and what do they actually find? In America, As Seen on TV, Clara E. Rodríguez surveys international college students and foreign nationals working or living in the US to examine the impact of American television on their views of the US and on their expectations of life in the United States. She finds that many were surprised to learn that America is racially and economically diverse, and that it is not the easy-breezy, happy endings culture portrayed in the media, but a work culture. The author also surveys US-millennials about their consumption of US TV and finds that both groups share the sense that American TV does not accurately reflect racial/ethnic relations in the US as they have experienced them. However, the groups differ on how much they think US TV has influenced their views on sex, smoking and drinking. America, As Seen on TV explores the surprising effects of TV on global viewers and the realities they and US millennials actually experience in the US.The surprising effects of American TV on global viewers As a dominant cultural export, American television is often the first exposure to American ideals and the English language for many people throughout the world. Data were collected from 279 Chinese college students using a cross-sectional online survey. The findings helped to better understand the viewing pattern of Chinese college students and more importantly, the results confirmed the overreaching impact based on substantial significant differences found between viewing groups. However, values are relatively hard to change and significant difference in values was only found between long-term and short-term viewers, which indicates that the length of viewership is the most powerful indicator in cultivation effects.

Book American Television and the Acculturation of International Students

Download or read book American Television and the Acculturation of International Students written by Veera Gaul and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that, while watching American television programming may dehumanize and trivialize thought and reason, it can play a significant role in the acculturation of international students because it aids in the creation of an unconscious cultural acceptance. The dissertation reviews the role of television in society and examines the implications of technology from the perspective of the humanities. Further, it overlays issues of culture shock and the acculturation of international students to American university life. It seeks to determine the pros and cons of using television watching as a means of cultural assimilation for international students given media dependency theories and a review of the impact of televisual messages on society. A discussion is included of the impact of technology as a system on society including the two ends of the spectrum of technophilia and technophobia. This serves to create a framework within which television is explored as one medium of technology. The study concludes that there are both advantages and disadvantages to televisual images as a means of acculturation, but that as long as the pendulum does not swing too far in either direction, international students can benefit from vicariously experiencing American culture through television programming in conjunction with authentic experiences with the community in which they have come to live. The purpose of the dissertation is to provide an increased understanding of the need to integrate international students into the academic community, student body and campus life by examining on medium of acculturation, namely televisual immersion.

Book The Five Myths of Television Power Or Why the Medium is Not the Message

Download or read book The Five Myths of Television Power Or Why the Medium is Not the Message written by Douglas Davis and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Five Myths of Television Power is a provocative and controversial book. It challenges the conventional assumption, repeated every day, that television dominates American life - if not the life of the entire world. Douglas Davis takes on this belief with arguments that will change the way we all view television." "Is TV-as-we-know-it dying? Douglas Davis contends that television's perceived power is just that - only perception, not fact, grossly exaggerated, and damaging to our national life. In The Five Myths of Television Power, Davis shatters the following myths: TV controls our voting. TV destroys our students. TV is (our) reality. TV pacifies us and keeps us at home. We love TV." "Davis analyzes many of television's most famous "events," from the home tapes that recorded the beating of Rodney King and, later, the Los Angeles riots, to the Gulf War, to the Clarence Thomas hearings, to Murphy Brown's illegitimate child and the surprising 1992 elections. Throughout he proves that the medium is hardly omnipotent, crushing all resistance in the viewers who turn it on. Rather, it is "a fat-bellied emperor unclothed, ready to succumb to leaner, looser, more invigorating competition." He warns that "traditional" television, if it remains complacent and unwilling to change, will self-destruct before a host of media and print challengers." "The Five Myths of Television Power will stir debate within the TV networks, the new cable TV empires, and among editors, publishers, students of media and the arts, and liberated TV viewers everywhere. Americans are tired of being told that they cannot think for themselves - the hidden message of Marshall McLuhan's books. The Five Myths of Television Power refutes McLuhan. It recasts the relationship of the viewer to television in an entirely new direction - one that empowers the viewer, and one that television executives should heed."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
