Book excerpt: "The primary purpose of this study sought to examine the relationship between student teachers' beliefs and classroom practices with regards to developmentally appropriate practice, from the perspective of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Theory. The influence of age of student teacher, prior experience and having an Associate's Degree prior to entering the university's teacher licensure program were examined. To investigate the relation between student teachers' beliefs and observed classroom practices, nineteen student teachers enrolled in HDF 460: Professional Experience in Early Childhood, participated in this study. Their participation included completing surveys to obtain demographic information and to assess their beliefs concerning developmentally appropriate practices. Student teachers also had to conduct videotaped lessons and activities in their student teaching placement. In addition, nine cooperating teachers filled out a set of two questionnaires to obtain demographic information and to assess their beliefs about the importance of various classroom developmentally appropriate practices. All nineteen student teacher participants were recruited from a North Carolina University and were seeking Birth-Kindergarten Licensure. All 9 cooperating teachers who also participated in this study were employed in the local Public School System and had previously had a student teacher from the participating university. The results reveal that having an Associate's Degree prior to entering the teacher licensure program did not significantly influence reported developmentally appropriate beliefs. However, having at least one year of prior experience and being a non-traditional student did positively influence those student teachers who were placed in pre-k classrooms in their reported developmentally appropriate beliefs. The findings also indicate that cooperating teachers' reported beliefs did not appear to have influence on their student teacher's observed practices, although the sample size was limited. The study provided evidence that all the student teachers started out with relatively high reported appropriate beliefs and retained them and the only change was an increase in reported beliefs for those placed in kindergarten classrooms. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Student performance on standardized tests correlates with demographic factors such as race and socio-economic status. On standardized tests, minority and low income students often perform below average. Previous analysis of 10th grade Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) Reading scores demonstrated that students at some schools with a majority at-risk population perform significantly below the state average, whereas students at other, similar schools perform significantly above the state average on this test. This study examined the differences between classroom factors, such as teacher beliefs and instructional practice, that might help explain these differences in performance among similar students on the 10th grade FCAT Reading test. Teachers at four schools with a majority of at-risk students were observed, interviewed and surveyed. This study found that teachers at high performing schools emphasized learner-centered teaching in both belief and practice, de-emphasizing the FCAT and the benchmarks tested. In contrast, teachers at low performing schools emphasized teacherix centered behaviors, both in belief and practice, and focused specifically on the FCAT as well as specific benchmarks tested.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study investigates teacher belief systems through the voices of effective classroom teachers. Four participants were identified as successful teachers by school administrators and students. They were interviewed individually and in focus groups and observed in their classrooms. The researcher communicates the teachers' beliefs through two narratives: a belief profile created from the teacher's words, revealing the teacher's conceptual framework for classroom practice, and a descriptive narrative of an observation and explication of beliefs created by the researcher's words. The researcher found that there were three levels of beliefs that each of these teacher exhibited: core, about their role as an educator; process, about the way they approach their practice; and action, about their classroom strategies. Though there were striking similarities at the core and process levels, there were significant differences at the action level. This study reinforces the need to consider contextual and personal issues when assessing teacher beliefs. The paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding and using the belief systems of teachers.

Mastery of the skill leads to high academic achievement and increased sense of self-efficacy. Teachers play a major role in developing self-regulation in children. Consequently, the beliefs and practices that teachers hold regarding poor self-regulation (i.e. inattention and impulsivity) are to be understood and taken into account. The Self-Regulation Survey was created to capture teachers' attributions for inattention and impulsivity along with subsequent chosen interventions in 52 participants. The results indicated that teachers attribute impulsivity to organic factors and family origin to a greater degree than classroom environment, instructional style, and motivation within the child. Inattention was attributed to the child's family and intrinsic motivation. When intervening on the behavior, teachers most often chose to move the child closer to the teacher and contact the parent. Participants' responses suggest differences amongst recommendations made for inattention versus those to impulsivity. Significant correlations existed between teachers' attributions of inattentiveness and impulsivity and interventions. More specifically, teachers who attribute inattentiveness to biological factors are likely to choose medication as an intervention. Those who attribute inattention to inappropriate instruction were likely to prefer adjusting the method of instruction. Similarly, teachers who attributed impulsivity to biological factors were likely to choose medication as a preferred recommendation. Attribution of impulsivity to the child's family was also correlated with teachers choosing to contact to parents. Results will inform future teacher trainings related to self-regulation.
