Book A Short History of the Hebrews to the Roman Period Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Hebrews to the Roman Period HE present Short History is an attempt to furnish teachers or students of the Old Testament with a sketch of the actual course of Hebrew history, somewhat more con sistent with the present state of our knowledge than the text books now in use. The book presupposes, and is intended to encourage, a careful and intelligent study of the text of the Bible. With a brief outline of the history in his hands, a thoughtful student is probably best left to himself. In regard to many points of detail, he must freely use his own judgment, and the broad lessons, moral and religious, of the history, may be trusted to impress themselves on his mind without the aid of a manual. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Hebrews: Their Political, Social and Religious Development and Their Contribution to World Betterment This volume seeks to make clear the important place of the Hebrew people in the history of nations and to justify the se lection of their history, as set forth in the Old Testament, as an introduction to the larger subject. It seems deplorable that so many thoughtful people of today, old and young alike, take little or no interest in the Bible or in the fascinating history which it records. The reason is largely, to be found in the fact that they failed in their formative years to become acquainted with the Bible in its true values, its attractiveness and its practical power. There seems to be a place for a compact, comprehensive outline of Biblical history and literature, simple enough in its expression and execution to hold the attention of the growing mind, and yet complete enough to meet the reasonable needs of any mind. Hebrew history and literature is a theme of great importance to the one who would really know his Bible. It can be mastered rapidly. Too much time is given, as a rule, to details of relatively slight consequence to the exclusion of those which have far reaching importance. This volume aims to indicate a proper balance of attention. It also seeks to enable the student to get rapidly to the heart of the subject and to View it frorri all essential standpoints, that of universal history, that of the development of the Hebrews, and that of permanent and personal values. The supreme defect of the religious thinking of the average man or woman of today is its narrowness. Every religiously-minded person needs to be familiar with the whole Bible and with the Bible as a whole. This knowledge need not be reserved for ministers or scholars. It mav be the possession of any thoughtful student of religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of the Hebrews Translated Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Hebrews Translated, Vol. 1 of 2 The selection of the present work as the first in this series which deals with the Old Testament has been made with special reference to the actual condition of critical studies in England. Long and arduous efforts have been required to naturalise Old Testament criticism among us, but our students still find great difficulty in mastering methods and assimilating results. The deliberateness of Professor Kittel's procedure and the comparative conservatism of his conclusions (so far as they are presented here) should ensure his work a cordial reception among us, while the attention which he has given to archaeological data furnish one more proof that Old Testament criticism has passed for good and all out of the purely literary stage which lasted from Eichhorn to Colenso. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of the Hebrews Their translations and interpretations were alike erroneous, that they had misread the names of Chedorlaomer and his allies, and that the 'arm of the Mighty King, ' in the letters of ebed-tob, meant the Pharaoh of Egypt. Unfortunately, the infallibility of the 'critical' consciousness can be better tested in the case of Assyriology than in that of the old Hebrew records, and the Assyriologist may therefo're be pardoned if he finds in such displays of ignorance merely a proof of the worthlessness of the 'critical' method. A method which leads its advocates to deny the facts stated by experts when these run counter to their own prepossessions cannot be of much value. At all events, it is a method with which the archaeologist and the historian can have nothing to do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Hebrews in Outline, Down to the Restoration Under Ezra and Nehemiah: Syllabus of a Course of Class Studies and Lectures This outline syllabus of Old Testament History, covering the ground from the Patriarchal Age to the times of Ezra and Nehemiah, is intended for use in the classes of the Western Theological Seminary. It pre supposes the discussions and lectures of the professor; and the arrangement of the material is such as to compel the student to study the original sources and to get a comprehensive idea of the chief works of modern his torical literature that bear on the history of ancient Israel. The chief merit of this method of approach to the subject lies in the compulsion which it exerts on the student: first, to master the material; and secondly, to think out the problems for himself instead of taking his conclusions secondhand from a textbook. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders of Israel: A Brief History of the Hebrews; From the Earliest Times to the Downfall of Jerusalem, A. D. 70 Thomas Carlyle's remark that "the history of the world is composed of the biographies of its great men" is particularly true of Israel. Accordingly, we have endeavored to correlate about some twenty-four outstanding "Leaders" the principal events of Old Testament history from the earliest times to the overthrow of Jerusalem by Titus in the year 70 A. D. The constant aim has been to assist the student who wishes to blaze his way, so to speak, through the Old Testament and trace the events chronologically. This brief epitome, therefore, having been written with a definite purpose, and according to a prescribed plan, is not intended to be exhaustive, but suggestive. The Bible account should, section by section, be read first; for, while the story is so written as to be read continuously it is directly contrary to our intention to take the Bible out of the reader's hand. In our attitude, we have endeavored to be constructive. Mere theories have found no place, but facts have been welcomed from every source, critical and archaeological. The scriptural quotations are taken from the American Revised Version, Standard Edition, which we commend most cordially to the student as the very best English version of the Bible yet made. Numerous maps and charts have been inserted as a possible help to the reader. A simple, one-page diagram sometimes conveys more information than could be expressed by words in an entire chapter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Hebrew People: From the Settlement in Canaan to the Division of the Kingdom The purpose in the present work is to introduce the general as well as the technical Bible student to the essential features of the political, social, and religious life of the Hebrew people. To the candid and thought ful it is a cause for thanksgiving rather than regret that the earnest scholarship of today is carefully sifting the current conclusions concerning the teaching and history contained in the Bible. Although at first the results of this critical study seem only destructive and even alarm ing, yet a closer examination demonstrates that they are but necessary means to an end. That end is the acquisition of the whole instead of partial truth. The enveloping masses of cloud must be scattered by the sunlight and driving gales, before the outlines of the eternal mountains can be seen in their true proportions. That which dispels human traditions and misconcep tions is of inestimable value, because it discloses the real. In reconstructing the facts of Hebrew history in the light of modern biblical research, however, positive rather than negative results command attention. It is sufficient in most cases to ignore the old conceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Extra Biblical Sources for Hebrew and Jewish History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Extra Biblical Sources for Hebrew and Jewish History Classic Reprint written by Samuel A. B. Mercer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extra-Biblical Sources for Hebrew and Jewish History The period covered by the term Hebrew and Jew ish History is taken, in this book, to extend from the beginning of Old Testament history down to the final destruction of the Jewish people as a nation in the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian. To the last part of the period pertain New Testament and Early Church history. No attempt has been made to deal with this subject. Our interest as to this period is confined to Jewish history. No serious student of Hebrew and Jewish history is willing to confine his reading to modern histories and text-books, excellent though they may be. He feels that he ought to go back of them to the original sources from which they are drawn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flight of the Hebrews, Told for Young Readers The events treated in this volume are among the most dramatic and interesting in the history of the world. The unity of the book consists in following the movements of the Hebrew race from the days of Abraham until the conquest of Canaan and the settle ment of the children of Israel in that land. The sig nificance of the title, The Flight of the Hebrews, is in the fact of the almost constant movements of that people from place to place, until they came into pos session of the promised land. The thought of a whole race in motion, in search of a home, an abiding-place, is in itself impressive. The grouping of events about this central thought will, it is hoped, give young read ers a vivid realization of the beginnings of the great. Download or read book Tales and Customs of the Ancient Hebrews for Young Readers Classic Reprint written by Eva Herbst and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales and Customs of the Ancient Hebrews for Young Readers This little volume has grown out of the actual experience of a practical, earnest primary teacher, who sees the place history occupies in a course of study. It has been my pleasure to watch the development of the history notion in our schools for the past few years. While several topics have been worked out in the grades, the subject of this volume seems to be the most easily arranged for first year pupils. Miss Herbst, while herself thoroughly familiar with her subject, has submitted the manuscript to a careful Hebrew scholar, who has verified its statements. What she has so well done, others can also do. I commend the work to primary teachers, and bespeak for it a large place among such teachers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Egypt of the Hebrews and Herodotos A few words of preface are needful to justify the addition of another contribution to the over-abundant mass of literature of which Egypt is the subject. It is intended to supple ment the books already in the hands of tourists and students, and to put before them just that information which either is not readily accessible or else forms part of larger and cumbrous works. The travels of Herodotos in Egypt are followed for the first time in the light of recent discoveries, and the history of the intercourse between the Egyptians and the Jews is brought down to the age of the Roman Empire. As the ordinary histories of Egypt used by travellers end with the extinction of the native Pharaohs, I have further given a sketch of the Ptolemaic period. I have more over specially noted the results of the recent excavations and discoveries made by the Egypt. Download or read book The Social Life of the Hebrews Classic Reprint written by Rev. Edward Day and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Life, of the Hebrews The designation of the period of Hebrew life which is considered in this part Of the present work is not as easy as it at first thought seems, for the term here employed, the usual one, is misleading, though per haps not as misleading to many as some other might be. The time covered is from the settlement of Canaan to the monarchy. This was a period when the Hebrews for the most part were wanting in unity, when the clans grouped themselves in certain parts of Canaan, revealing in some instances their kinship, as in the case of the Leah and Rachel clans. If there had been something akin to national life prior to the settlement, during their nomadic wanderings, it must have grown very largely out of the circumstances of that life. When they entered Canaan, as there will be an endeavour to Show later, they went up in groups to their various allotments or destinations and es tablished themselves as best they could. Later, on rare occasions, clan aided clan, and on occasions rarer still, group or tribe aided some clan in extremity. Not apparently until near the close Of this period.
