Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student's History of English Literature The problems involved in the preparation of a book like this are many; their solution is often a matter of experiment. In attempting A Student's History of English Literature, the writer makes small claim to originality in the method of his compilation. The admirable text-books of Pancoast, of Moody and Lovett, of Halleck, and of Johnson, as well as the older standard histories, have suggested many points of practical utility; and the writer hastens to acknowledge his indebtedness to his predecessors. In the interest of clearness the author has adopted the simplest possible division of his subject - that according to centuries; and has relied upon the subdivisions of his chapters to emphasize properly the important literary movements of each period. He has assumed that as many as possible of the essential facts in literary history should be presented to his readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature This book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most im portant authors. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity. Perhaps I may venture to add that personally I find it ad visable to pass hastily over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so gain as much time as possible for the nineteenth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Reuben Post Halleck and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature In the following pages the author aims to furnish a concise and interesting text-book of the history and development of English literature from the earliest times to the present. Especial attention is paid to literary movements, to the essential qualities which differentiate one period from another, and to showing the animating spirit of each age. It is more important to understand the relation of the age of Pope to that of Wordsworth than to know these two writers merely as individuals. It is better for the student to catch the general drift of literary thought than to study a large number of comparatively unimportant authors and to ignore the law of the survival of the fittest. The majority of people never have time for the study of any but the masters. Such people need a guide to tell them what to select from each age, just as much as travelers in England require a guidebook to indicate the most interesting places. The writer has made no attempt to minimize the study of authors as individuals. One of the features of this work consists in devoting a special section to summing up the general characteristics of each of the greatest individual authors. The theory that it is wise to teach the general before the special is now happily going out of fashion. But the moment we know two authors we ought to begin to compare them, to note their likeness and their difference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of English Literature It has been my endeavour, in writing this volume, to tell the story of the beginning and growth of English literature, in a form simple enough to interest the youngest students in our schools and homes and likely to help them to take pleasure in studying this too often neglected subject. In treating the various periods into which I have divided the history, I have devoted some space to describing the character of the age under consideration. All teachers are conscious of the difficulties which surround young students in their efforts to understand the works of authors who lived in times so distant and so different from our own. I need, therefore, make no apology for thus travelling outside the main province of a history of literature, if by so doing I have helped the reader to enter into the spirit of past ages. As biography is of special interest to the young, the lives of the great writers of each age are given a prominent place. Download or read book The Tutorial History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by A. J. Wyatt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tutorial History of English Literature The common complaint against smaller text-books of literature is that they include too much, and fail to pre serve due proportion between the greater and the lesser writers. In this book the lesser writers are mentioned, if at all, only incidentally; and the attempt has been made, in passing from one great writer to another, to give the history, as distinguished from the mere story, of English literature - to lay bare some of the more important aspects of the work of each author selected, while tracing the lines of development from writer to writer - in a word, to make an elementary book scientific, as far as the methods of science are applicable. In this task I have had no model before me to improve upon, and am more painfully aware, than any friendly reader or critic can be, of Shortcomings in its execution. In particular I have felt the difficulty of being consistent in difficulty: of avoiding the Opposite dangers of 'talking over people's heads' and childish simplicity. The former danger may be largely obviated if the student, before perusing each chapter, will read the English Classics recommended on. Book A History of English Literature and of the Chief English Writers

Download or read book A History of English Literature and of the Chief English Writers written by Alexander Hamilton Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature and of the Chief English Writers: Founded Upon the Manual of Thomas B. Shaw The attempt of the editor in the new edition of The Student's Englzk/z Literature has been to bring the work as far as possible into line with contemporary and authoritative criticism, to harmonise previous editions, especially with regard to the final part of the book, and to provide a manual which, while supplying the ordinary student with necessary facts, may also be of use to the more advanced student and to lovers of English literature generally. The subject, since Mr. Shaw's original work was written, has assumed such important proportions, and the number of authorities is become so incredibly greater, that much that was then matter-of-fact and current criticism is now obsolete. The book, therefore, has been rewritten com pletely; and, while the editor has endeavoured to retain, with as little alteration as possible, all that was most characteristic of the original author's thought and style - as, for example, in the chapters on Shakespeare and Milton - much of it is of necessity entirely new. 'all facts and dates have been carefully and scrupulously verified by comparison with the most recent authorities; and, although it is more than possible that, in so wide a field, some errors may have been overlooked, yet it is believed that the student will find the manual accurate and trustworthy in this respect. The second chapter, on Chaucer, has been rewritten by Professor W. P. Ker. The editor wishes to thank Mr. J. Cooke, of Dublin, and Mr. H. W. Law for the care with which they have read over the proofs of the book, and the valuable advice and help which they have given him in the prosecution of his task. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of English Literature, Vol. 1: Chaucer to Marlowe T is a wise thing, before we plunge Into any new study, to try and give ourselves some account of what it is that we mean by it, and what it is that we expect from it. And therefore an historical sketch of English literature opens rightly with a consideration of the nature and the value of literature in general. What can books do for us? And in what spirit ought we to read them P - those are the preliminary questions which we must ask. And the answers which we shall find to them may perhaps help to assure us that we are not following a vain quest, on a track that leads no whither, and may furnish some ideas that, if kept steadily in mind, will serve as guides and sign-posts throughout the journey. Subordinate to these authors are those less famous with whom all but the most superficial students should be acquainted, and who would necessarily be excluded in a briefer consideration of our literature. III. Authors' belonging to the literature of knowl edge, rather than to the literature of power, writers whose services must always be remembered in any complete history of literature, these, together with their works, are mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of each chapter. IV. English authors have been chronologically divided into six groups for the purpose of giving the student a clearer idea of what writers were contemporaneous, and, at the same time, effectively to present the movement dur ing each epoch. It is believed that the classification is a natural one, and that while doing no violence to similar and well-settled plans, it more exactly discriminates the periods of actual change in the literary spirit.
