Book Elocution the Sources and Elements of Its Power

Download or read book Elocution the Sources and Elements of Its Power written by J. H. McIlvaine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elocution the Sources and Elements of Its Power: A Textbook for Schools and Colleges, and a Book for Every Public Speaker, and Student of the English Language The author of this work has been engaged in the practice of public speaking, almost without interruption, for thirty years; during the last ten of which, he has also been a systematic student and teacher of the art of elocution. When he accepted the chair of Belles Lettres in Princeton College, in 1860, he received a special request from the Board of Trustees to work up this much neglected department of education although it was not properly included in the duties of his professorship; and with this object in view, they gave him a laborious and faithful assistant in Prof. S. G Peabody. The notes and criticisms, which gradually accumulated upon his hands in successive courses of instruction and training, are here offered to the public in a systematic form, now that his work in the College is drawing to a close. The attention of teachers and students of this art, is requested, in appreciation of the following points. 1. Nearly one half of the work consists in the exhibition of the intellectual, moral, esthetical and physical sources of power in delivery, which, it is believed, have never before been treated of as included in the art of elocution. Book Let the Students Speak

Download or read book Let the Students Speak written by David L. Hudson and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a trusted scholar and powerful story teller, an accessible and lively history of free speech, for and about students. Let the Students Speak! details the rich history and growth of the First Amendment in public schools, from the early nineteenth-century's failed student free-expression claims to the development of protection for students by the U.S. Supreme Court. David Hudson brings this history vividly alive by drawing from interviews with key student litigants in famous cases, including John Tinker of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District and Joe Frederick of the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" case, Morse v. Frederick. He goes on to discuss the raging free-speech controversies in public schools today, including dress codes and uniforms, cyberbullying, and the regulation of any violent-themed expression in a post-Columbine and Virginia Tech environment. This book should be required reading for students, teachers, and school administrators alike.

Book Free Speech on Campus

Download or read book Free Speech on Campus written by Erwin Chemerinsky and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can free speech coexist with an inclusive campus environment? Hardly a week goes by without another controversy over free speech on college campuses. On one side, there are increased demands to censor hateful, disrespectful, and bullying expression and to ensure an inclusive and nondiscriminatory learning environment. On the other side are traditional free speech advocates who charge that recent demands for censorship coddle students and threaten free inquiry. In this clear and carefully reasoned book, a university chancellor and a law school dean—both constitutional scholars who teach a course in free speech to undergraduates—argue that campuses must provide supportive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body but can never restrict the expression of ideas. This book provides the background necessary to understanding the importance of free speech on campus and offers clear prescriptions for what colleges can and can’t do when dealing with free speech controversies.

Book Writers at Work The Essay Student s Book

Download or read book Writers at Work The Essay Student s Book written by Dorothy Zemach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from Writers at Work: The Paragraph and Writers at Work: the Short Composition, Writers at Work: The Essay will teach the basics of academic essay writing to intermediate-level students. In Writers at Work: The Essay, college and university students use the process approach to write different genres of essays common at the post-secondary level, the most important being expository writing, persuasive writing, and timed essay exams. Each chapter uses the same five-step approach to writing that is used in the two lower-level books. In each chapter, students analyze a model essay, noticing key organizational and linguistic features; brainstorm ideas; write multiple drafts; revise their work; engage in peer reviews; and share their finished work. Chapters recycle and build upon previously taught material.

Book Practical Elocution

Download or read book Practical Elocution written by Jacob W. Shoemaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Elocution: For Use in Colleges and Schools and by Private Students The study of Elocution and Oratory was pursued to a very high degree by the ancients, and is therefore an old study. It was, however, so nearly lost as a distinctive branch of cul ture, and it received so little attention for many succeeding centuries that it may be very justly termed a modern science.
