Book excerpt: The change in paradigm in our field is away from the great man or woman theory of leadership and the teacher in his or her own classroom to the development of learning communities which value differences and support critical reflection and encourage members to question, challenge, and debate teaching and learning issues. How to achieve such learning communities is far from clear, but we believe the areas of problem-based learning (PBL) and organizational learning (OL) offer valuable clues. The indications are that the successful educational restructuring agenda depends on teams of leaders, whole staffs and school personnel, working together (i.e., OL) linking evidence and practice in genuine collaboration (i.e., PBL). The book is unique in that it is both about and uses these two concepts. The book is made up of four sections: 1.An introductory rational in which the case for using only quality evidence in school reform efforts is argued. Results from a quality research project are then presented. These results are organised around six questions: how is the concept of OL defined in schools ('teacher voice')? what leadership practices promote OL in schools ('teacher voice')? what are some outcomes of schooling other than academic achievement ('pupil voice')? what are the relationships between the non-academic and academic outcomes of schooling? does school leadership and/or organisational learning contribute to student outcomes? And, what other factors contribute to student outcomes? The section concludes with a plea that given the accumulation and consistent quality of the evidence from across systems and countries, we no longer need to involve ourselves with just impressions of effective leadership. We have a way forward that links leadership to organisational learning and improved student outcomes. 2.Advice for using the book. The reasons for the choice of problem-based learning as the vehicle for the professional development materials that form the major part of this book are detailed. Suggestions are then made for use of the book, including a one-day and two- day workshop, and advice on group development and warm-up activities for such group development before moving to the problem-based learning package in Section 3; 3.A problem based-learning, evidence informed, professional development package for aspiring and actual school leaders based on real schools and their leaders. 4.A challenge. The final section provides refined versions of the diagnostic instruments used in the research and challenges readers to use them in their own schools. Book excerpt: Abstract: The concept of leadership development has long been a focus of research in education. Notably, there has never been a more pertinent time in history for leadership. Since the beginning of the early 20th century, there has been thousands of research studies conducted on the 'traits' possessed by effective leaders (Northouse, 2009). Possibly, all of the traits identified could be associated with effective leadership; however the research leads us to believe there are six key traits to leadership including: intelligence, confidence, charisma, determination, sociability, and integrity (Northouse, 2009). These six traits in addition to leadership and decision-making efficacy are learnable, manageable characteristics that individuals can practice. High school students are at an age where development and growth are a part of everyday life and it is notable that these years in high school may tend to be the best and most crucial years for leadership development to begin. The opportunity to build leadership skills outside of the classroom may only exist for some high school students through their participation in organizations and activities. The purpose of this study was to determine if student participation in activities and organizations during high school was related to student leadership traits. This correlational study employed survey methodology to develop a profile of students at Madison Plains High School in London, Ohio. The survey collected quantitative data from high school student respondents used to describe the relationship between their self-perceived leadership and their participation in activities and organizations. The survey was administered via a paper questionnaire asking respondents to self-assess their leadership traits and to provide data about their participation in organizations and activities during high school. Demographic data was also requested. A six-point Likert-type response scale was provided for respondents to report their agreement/disagreement with 48 items that respectively comprised eight leadership trait categories. Students were also asked to report the number of years during high school that they participated in organizations and activities (0 year - 4 years) and also to indicate if they had served in a leadership role in each respective activity. Overall, this study found that Madison Plains High School students generally agreed that they possessed leadership traits comprising the eight leadership constructs. Junior students generally rated their self-perceived leadership traits lower than students in the other three grade levels on each of the eight leadership constructs. Nine statistically significant relationships were found between activity participation and the leadership constructs however, the magnitude of most correlation coefficients was low therefore, the relationships were not of practical significance. Based on the results of this study, the researchers concluded that there was no practical relationship between the self-perceived leadership traits of Madison Plains High School Students and their participation in organizations and activities during high school. Student leadership development should be a top priority for school administrators, teachers and faculty members at Madison Plains High School. School administrators and teachers should seek to provide students with leadership development opportunities within the scope of the school curriculum.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The steady increase of racial and ethnic diversity in public universities has provided student leaders with many challenges. However, little is known about the effects of racial and ethnic diversity on the development of these student leaders. This study aims to evaluate the effects of racial and ethnic diversity in college student organizations on the development of student leaders and the perceived value of such diversity on their development. The sample consists of 833 student leaders from Florida's ten public universities who completed online surveys. The questions asked were designed to evaluate their past and present leadership roles and skills, exposure to ethnic and racial diversity on their campus (specifically in student organizations), and the perceived influence of racial and ethnic diversity on their leadership skills and career preparation. The results of the study show there is a positive relationship between membership in a diverse student organization and the development of leadership skills. The findings also reveal that the leadership skills learned from this exposure are expected to better prepare students for their careers upon graduation.

The study identified four specific objectives, namely, to assess the influence and contribution of integrity, inspiration, competencies on students’ academic performance and to specify criteria for appointment of head of schools. The study employed an explanatory and cross-sectional design in collecting quantitative data using questionnaires administered on selected school teachers and secondary data was collected from a review of pertinent documents and from the internet. The findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between the leadership attributes of heads of school and students’ academic performance. Hence, the study concluded that the integrity, competency and inspirational outlooks of heads of schools influence students’ academic performances.
