Book Made Free and Thrown Open to the Public

Download or read book Made Free and Thrown Open to the Public written by Bernadette A. Lear and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Made Free and Thrown Open to the Public charts the history of public libraries and librarianship in Pennsylvania. Based on archival research at more than fifty libraries and historical societies, it describes a long progression from private, subscription-based associations to publicly funded institutions, highlighting the dramatic period during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when libraries were “thrown open” to women, children, and the poor. Made Free explains how Pennsylvania’s physical and cultural geography, legal codes, and other unique features influenced the spread and development of libraries across the state. It also highlights Pennsylvania libraries’ many contributions to the social fabric, especially during World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. Most importantly of all, Made Free convincingly argues that Pennsylvania libraries have made their greatest strides when community activists and librarians, supported with state and local resources, have worked collaboratively.

Book Keep Your Customers

Download or read book Keep Your Customers written by Ali Cudby and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fresh take on retention and revenue is “a useful guide to long-term customer loyalty that’s engaging, insightful and actionable . . . a fast, easy read” (Jonathan Tower, Managing Partner, Catapult VC). It costs 5 to 25 times more for companies to acquire a new customer versus retaining an existing one. That means a company’s process to keep its customers is tied directly to its revenue and profitability. In Keep Your Customers, Ali Cudby provides insights from business leaders, beginning with legendary executive Kay Koplovitz. The book goes on to offer real-world consumer behavior stories, business best practices, and CEO-led case studies in industries ranging from technology (ClusterTruck, PERQ), consumer packaged goods (Soapbox), and retail (Esprit de la Femme, Urban Stems). Interviews with renowned venture capitalists Mark Suster and Kara Nortman of Upfront Ventures, Square Capital executive Jackie Reses, and indie musician Craig Wedren, former Shudder to Think frontman and Yellowjackets composer, are also featured. Keep Your Customers is based on a proven process that has helped companies around the world improve the lifetime value of their clients. Keep Your Customers shares a fresh perspective on the old problem of customer relations. It jumps straight into practical strategies and actionable tactics to bring loyalty marketing to life for large and small businesses alike. Ali Cudby shares how to set up customer engagement for loyalty with a company culture to support it; grow without being stuck in the endless grind of new customer acquisition; and build the most powerful asset for any enterprise—a loyal, long-term, and lucrative customer base.

Book Jews in China

    Book Details:
  • Author : Irene Eber
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2019-10-21
  • ISBN : 0271085851
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Jews in China written by Irene Eber and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irene Eber was one of the foremost authorities on Jews in China during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries—a field that, in contrast to the study of the Jewish diaspora in Europe and the Americas, has been critically neglected. This volume gathers fourteen of Eber’s most salient articles and essays on the exchanges between Jewish and Chinese cultures, making available to students, scholars, and general readers a representative sample of the range and depth of her important work in the field of Jews in China. Jews in China delineates the centuries-long, reciprocal dialogue between Jews, Jewish culture, and China, all under the overarching theme of cultural translation. The first section of the book sets forth a sweeping overview of the history of Jews in China, beginning in the twelfth century and concluding with a detailed assessment of the two crucial years leading up to the Second World War. The second section examines the translation of Chinese classics into Hebrew and the translation of the Hebrew Bible into Chinese. The third and final section turns to modern literature, bringing together eight essays that underscore the cultural reciprocity that takes place through acts of translation. The centuries-long relationship between Judaism and China is often overlooked in the light of the extensive discourse surrounding European and American Judaism. With this volume, Eber reminds us that we have much to learn from the intersections between Jewish identity and Chinese culture.
