Book Student Generated Sexual Harassment in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Student Generated Sexual Harassment in Secondary Schools written by Roberta Wetzel and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetzel and Brown examine the extent to which student-to-student sexual harassment exists in secondary schools today. They provide evidence that student sexual harassment is not only currently widespread, it is also unconsciously and consciously condoned by school authorities who are charged with providing a safe and effective educational environment. After reviewing the state of sexual harassment in American high schools, the authors provide the best practices for increasing awareness of what behaviors constitute sexual harassment as well as alert readers to the negative impact on both boys and girls, where sexual harassment is most likely to take place, and ways students can become more socially adept. A template for developing a school district policy is presented as are strategies for educating and dissemination. Practical and specific strategies for parents, teachers, and students are presented in detail.

Book Sex Youth and Sex Education

Download or read book Sex Youth and Sex Education written by David Campos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-04-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative reference that discusses the history of sex education and its ramifications in the United States. Community and school officials, parents, and educators often stay to the wee hours of the night at PTA meetings arguing about sex education and sexual behavior among young people. While some groups preach abstinence and attempt to sign as many youngsters as possible to their rosters, it remains a fact that 50 percent of U.S. teenagers, beginning at age 15, are sexually active. Sex, Youth, and Sex Education is a wonderfully crafted resource that gives not only a statistical overview of sexual activity in schools, but also examines sex education, the scourge of sexual violence in schools, and sexuality among selected groups of youngsters. What emerges is a groundbreaking work for educators and students of sociology, psychology, and education. This work brings to light the fascinating—not to mention ubiquitous—world of sexuality among today's youth and its impact on parents, school personnel, policymakers, and society.

Book excerpt: Sexual harassment has long been an unfortunate part of the climate in middle and high schools in the United States. Often considered a form of bullying, sexual harassment by definition involves sex and gender and therefore warrants separate attention. This report provides fresh evidence about students' experiences, including being harassed, harassing someone else, or witnessing harassment. The students share their reactions to their experiences, and also provide ideas for how schools can respond to and prevent sexual harassment.

Book Re Interpretations

Download or read book Re Interpretations written by Lisa Dresdner and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patriarchal institutions govern all aspects of women's lives: their minds, their bodies, and their souls. Additionally, they govern the ways in which women are perceived by others and the ways in which women perceive themselves. (Re) Interpretations: The Shapes of Justice in Women's Experience, is a collection of essays on language, religion, war, sex trafficking, and medicine the patriarchal structures that form the basis of western society and, thus, are in many ways inherently unjust. The essays illustrate the multitude of ways that women have found to work within and without these structures to create justice. Traditional theories of justice cast it as a cardinal virtue, unbiased and impartial. The essays in this book, however, remove justice from the abstract and return it to the specific: most of the essays use personal narratives to highlight the connections all people share. The women discussed here are challenging the authority of existing patriarchal narratives by telling their versions, and, thus, calling attention to and challenging their own political and social realities. Reflecting a focus on global connectedness and interdisciplinarity, the writers of these essays aim not only to raise questions, but also to show ways in which women are creating new pathways for themselves. Only by exploring solutions will women reclaim justice. From L.A. to Zimbwabe, women have stories to tell about their experiences of justice in the inherently patriarchal institutions of Language, Religion, War, Sex Trafficking, and Medicine. This relevant and thought-provoking collection captures the trials that women across the world face and the hope they create through their courageous actions. Through both personal narrative and factual overview, these essays emphasize that as people committed to justice, women must not simply raise the questions, but they must also explore solutions in order to reclaim justice for themselves, their daughters, their sisters, and their mothers.Contributors: Yifat Bitton, Stephany Ryan Cate, Jo Scott-Coe, Susan Dewey, Carmela Epright, Carmen Faymonville, Adam Gaynor, Pauline Greenhill, Denise Handlarski, Alison Jobe, Marc J.W. de Jong, Jodie M. Download or read book Hostile Hallways written by and published by American Association of University Women Educational Foundat. This book was released on 2001 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates secondary school students' experiences of sexual harassment--and all the bullying, teasing, and touching it entails--and compares the results with those of the 1993 study "Hostile Hallways: The AAUW Survey on Sexual Harassment in America's Schools." Topics in the survey include students' knowledge and awareness of sexual harassment, personal experiences with sexual harassment in their school lives, and the emotional and behavioral impact of these experiences. A nationally representative sample of 2064 public school students in 8th through 11th grades was interviewed. Using self-administered questionnaires, 1559 students were surveyed during an English class, and 505 students were surveyed online. Students' answers were analyzed, where possible, to identify any difference by gender, race/ethnicity, grade level, and area of school. As in 1993, nearly all students say they know what sexual harassment is, and they provided their own definitions when asked. Major findings reveal the following: significant numbers of students are afraid of being hurt or bothered in their school lives; sexual harassment is widespread in school life; school sexual harassment has a negative impact on students' emotional and educational lives; students today are more likely than those in 1993 to say their schools have a policy or distribute literature on sexual harassment; nearly all students surveyed know what sexual harassment is; the most upsetting examples of sexual harassment in school life involve speech as well as actions; a sizeable minority of students reports high levels of sexual harassment in school; most experiences involve students harassing students, although many experiences involve school adults harassing students; and slightly more than half (54%) of students say they have sexually harassed someone during their school lives. Contains 29 figures and an afterword. Appended is the research methodology with additional figures. (BT)

Book Sexual Harassment

Download or read book Sexual Harassment written by June Larkin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Girls are harassed in high schools every day. And no-one seems to be doing much about the problem. In this riveting expose, former teacher June Larkin details how girls are harassed by males in schools. Based on firsthand interviews with teenage girls, she paints a frightening picture of how sexual harassment is part of daily high school life. She also charges the education system with complicity, demonstrating that administrators, educators and officials often reinforce the problem by simply ignoring the situation. Comprehensive and revealing, Sexual Harassment: High School Girls Speak Out evaluates the long-term effects of harassment on girls and on boys. As long as harassment remains a fact of school life, Larkin argues, equal opportunity in education will remain unrealized.

Book excerpt: Taking an active stand in today's conservative educational climate can be a risky business. Given both the expectations of the profession and the challenge of participation in social justice activism, how do educator activists manage the often competing demands of professional and activist commitments? Activist Educators offers a view into the big picture of assertive idealistic professionals’ lives by presenting rich qualitative data on the impetus behind educators’ activism and the strategies they used to push limits in fighting for a cause. Chapters follow the stories of educator activists as they take on problems in schools, including sexual harassment, sexism, racism, reproductive rights, and GLBT rights. The research in Activist Educators contributes to an understanding of professional and personal motivations for educators’ activism, ultimately offering a significant contribution to aspiring teachers who need to know that education careers and social justice activist causes need not be mutually exclusive pursuits.
