Book Faculty Participation in Decision Making

Download or read book Faculty Participation in Decision Making written by Carol Everly Floyd and published by Study of Higher Education. This book was released on 1985 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature concerning higher education and generic organization theory is reviewed to address various questions relating to faculty participation in institutional decision-making. Attention is directed to: the rationale for faculty participation, alternative types of participation, participation in academic senates, participation by functional area, participation at the system and state levels, participation and centralization/decentralization, strengthening consultative processes, and increasing faculty satisfaction and participation. Generic organization theory provides extensive reasons why participation in organizational decision-making can improve employees' satisfaction and performance. Types of faculty participation in institutional decision-making are separate jurisdictions, shared authority, and joint participation. Faculty participation can involve curriculum design, faculty personnel status, selection and evaluation of administrators, planning, budgeting, and planning for retrenchment or financial exigency. Joint faculty and administrator efforts may focus on four important areas: rebuilding collegial foundations, shaping the consultative framework, increasing the availability of information, and facilitating group deliberations. Areas for further analysis are suggested. (SW)

Book Student Transition to Four year Institutions Faculty Staff and Administrator Perceptions of Articulation Processes

Download or read book Student Transition to Four year Institutions Faculty Staff and Administrator Perceptions of Articulation Processes written by Amy Apicerno and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The open admissions policies of community colleges serve to remove barriers for students aspiring to a college education (Mosholder & Zirkle, 2007), provide an affordable opportunity to attend college (Mullin & Honeyman, 2008; Zinser & Hanssen, 2006), and increase underrepresented student population enrollments at four-year institutions (Allen, Robbins, Casillas, & Oh, 2008). Community college transfer students face unique challenges in their transition compared with other transfer students (Falconetti, 2009a). As Eggleston and Laanan (2001) noted, "abundant research has been conducted regarding community college transfer students in conjunction with their academic performance, baccalaureate attainment, and persistence at the four year college level," but a gap exists as "a limited amount of research has been done to study the transfer student's adjustment process, once he or she has reached the senior institution" (p. 87). The purpose of this study was to explore faculty, staff, and administrator perceptions of institutional support regarding student transition from articulation to four-year institutions. The research question guiding this study was: How do faculty, staff, and administrators perceive institutional support regarding community college student transition to a four-year institution? This qualitative, descriptive study utilized face-to-face interviews as the primary data collection strategy. Nine faculty, staff, and administrators (N=9) working with and influencing programming for students going from articulation through first semester in a bachelor's program were invited to participate. Participants were interviewed until data saturation was achieved. Once themes emerged, data informed secondary data collection utilizing a reflective questionnaire with the same nine (N=9) participants. Evaluation coding (Saldana, 2009) and logical analysis (Patton, 2002) were utilized to analyze data. Documents related to the transition process were analyzed in order to triangulate and add rigor to findings. Findings included insights regarding shared characteristics of successful students; transition challenges; students not utilizing institutional support; and organizational structure implicating student transition. This study sought to add to the body of knowledge regarding institutional support available for community college transfer students in order to potentially inform decisions regarding how institutions can better serve this student population. These results may assist them in their adjustment, the four-year institutions, and the workforce.

Book The Locus of Formal Decision Making in Christian College Coalition Institutions

This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The problem was to determine the perceptions of those involved about the locus of formal decision making relative to academic, student affairs, development, and administration decisions for Coalition colleges. Answers were sought to questions about which specific position incumbents/units were perceived to be involved in making and participating in making decisions, and differences in perceptions based on respondent role (trustees, administration, administration/faculty, faculty) and on level of involvement (no involvement, provides information, recommends, makes decision). Data were obtained by means of a decision point analysis instrument from 59 of the 69 institutions with 293 returns. Analysis of variance was utilized to determine differences in perceptions. Faculty members, academic deans, and presidents were perceived to be major decision makers in academics; deans of students and presidents in student affairs; trustees, presidents, and business officers in development; and trustees and presidents in administration. Most frequently perceived to participate were chairpersons and academic deans in academics; presidents. academic deans, deans of students, and business officers in student affairs; presidents and development officers in development; and presidents, academic deans, and business officers in administration. Based on position, there were significant differences about who makes the decision for 6 of the 19 items and about who participates for 15. The significant differences in who makes the decision were for adding a course, changing a grade, changing an admission policy, building a building, changing the purpose of the college, and changing the bylaws. Based on level of involvement, there were significant differences about who makes the decision for 3 of the 19 items. These were for adding a course, beginning a fund-raising project, and filling an administrative vacancy. It was concluded that there was considerable unanimity of opinion about who makes decisions, but little about who participates. The most frequent decision makers were those at the top of the hierarchy (trustees and presidents), and those who least frequently made the decisions were those at then lower levels (chairpersons and faculty).
