Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student Course in Railroading This outline of work and reading in railroading is not designed to be a complete and exhaustive study of the subject. Its aim is to be a "laboratory" course, as it were, to fit young men to assume positions of responsibility in the management of railroad affairs, and to prepare them in such a way that they may have a working knowledge of the several departments and their inter-relation, so that they may be able to conduct the particular duties assigned to them in harmony with the scheme of railroading as a whole. For constructive criticism, I am indebted to Mr. William Sproule, President; Mr. E.E. Calvin, Vice-President in charge of Operation and Construction; Mr. A.D. McDonald, Auditor; Mr. E. O. McCormick, Vice-President in charge of Traffic; Mr. W.R. Scott, General Manager; Mr. G.F. Richardson, Superintendent of Transportation; Mr. J. M. Davis, General Superintendent; Mr. J. M. Brewer, Freight Claim Agent; Mr. Thomas A. Graham, General Freight Agent; Mr. W. F. Taylor, Assistant General Freight Agent; Mr. W. C. Dorsey, Chief Clerk, Auditor of Disbursements; Mr. Norman Collyer, of the President's office; and Mr. L. A. Giamboni, Assistant in the Bureau of Economics; all of the Southern Pacific Company; Mr. Paul Shoup, President. Pacific Electric; and Major Charles Hine, Vice-President and General Manager, Southern Pacific of Mexico. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Pacific Company (Pacific System): Student Course in Railroading, June 1, 1914 This outline of work and reading in railroading is not intended to be a complete and exhaustive study of the subject. It is rather a "laboratory" course, to fit young men to assume positions of responsibility in the management of railroad affairs, and to equip them with a working knowledge of the several departments and their inter-relation, so that they may be able to conduct the particular duties assigned to them in harmony with the scheme of railroading as a whole. The course is so designed that the first two years will cover the entire field of railroading in a general way. Thereafter there follows one and one-half years of special work in either Operation and Maintenance, Passenger and Freight Traffic, or Accounting. This plan has the merit of giving a general training in all of the principal departments of the railroad, and of imparting to the student the knowledge that is so necessary to conduct properly the work of any given department in harmony and in co-ordination with all the other departments. The particular field to which the student is assigned depends upon his own inclinations, coupled with his qualifications as determined by his record and the observations of the officer in charge of students. Book The Working of the Railroads Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Working of the Railroads Classic Reprint written by Logan G. McPherson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working of the Railroads That portion of these lectures which treats of the organization, the work and inter-relation of the different departments of a railroad company, is based in the main upon the writer's experience and observation while in the railroad service, supplemented by the information which officers of acknowledged eminence in active administration have courteously and freely given. It is believed that a large part of this information finds accessible expression for the first time. It is hoped that this volume will aid in giving an accurate conception of the underlying principles of railroad practice to (a) Those whose votes elect legislators and ultimately control legislation; (b) Those in the railroad service who would gain a more extended view of its different phases than is afforded by contact with their own immediate duties; (c) Young men whose studies include the transportation industry, many of whom may make it their vocation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroads: Finance and Organization The foregoingstaternent affords one explanation for the quite abounding account of the shortcomings Of our American railroad financiering within these covers. The stream of the text, especially in certain chapters, flows across a somewhat dreary landscape. But facts are facts. It takes too much time, besides missing the main point, to call a spade an instru ment Of husbandry. But there is another warrant for entire frankness. Outspoken and rigorous analysis Of wrongdoing has a scientific as well as a moral side. Pathology is as well recognized a department of medicine as therapeutics. The laws of health can be worked out only in a fulness Of knowledge as to the nature of disease. And until the cause and the com pleted course of disease are thoroughly understood, the prac titioner is well - nigh helpless to effect a cure. Yet the student of medicine, because his attention for a time is fixed upon phys ical disorders, does not lose faith in the curative possibilities Of his art. Neither does he conclude that all men are bodily unsound, because his clinic reveals so much human defective ness. Just so would we conclude our study with the affirmation that never in our history, and probably nowhere else in the world, has the standard Of probity, the quickened sense of responsibility, both public and private, among American rail road men, been more pronounced than it is at the present time. Book Buildings and Structures of American Railroads

Download or read book Buildings and Structures of American Railroads written by Walter G. Berg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buildings and Structures of American Railroads: A Reference Book for Railroad Managers, Superintendents, Master Mechanics, Engineers, Architects, and Students It is hardly necessary to call attention to the scarcity of American literature on build ings and similar structures connected with the station service, maintenance of way and operating departments of railroads. With the exception of isolated articles to be found in technical periodicals or in the publications of professional societies, accurate and exhaustive data relating to existing railroad structures can only be obtained by personal inspection or by addressing the proper department official in charge of the work in question. The purpose of this book is to obviate to a large extent the necessity of railroad men and others in search of such information having to resort to tedious investigations and personal inquiries. Attention is also called to the fact that most of the subjects embraced in this book have never before been discussed in print in a systematic and thorough manner. The aim of the author has been to present a collection embodying the best practice for each particular class of structure, whether cheap or expensive, and showing the sundry varia tions caused by individual views or local conditions in different sections of the country. Particular attention has been paid to the smaller buildings connected with the roadway and operating departments. The cheap and simple structures in use in the thinly settled sections of the country have been considered of as much importance as those of the most elaborate and artistic design. Book Railroad Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railroad Construction Classic Reprint written by Charles Lee Crandall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Construction This book had its beginning in some notes on railroad con struction which were first prepared about twenty-five years ago and were issued in mimeograph form for the use of students in the College of Civil Engineering at Cornell University. These notes have required frequent revision in order to keep them abreast of ever changing practice, but so much has been done in the last few years in the direction of standardizing construction that the time now seems opportune for enlarging them into a book, for general use. The discussions in engineering associations and in the technical papers have done much to stimulate interest and develop effort. They have also tended to standardize practice by suggesting to each engineer the adoption of the good features of the standards of other railroads, which were improvements upon and applicable to his own road. The method adopted by the American Railway Engineering Association of assigning topics to committees for investigation and report, the report to be presented at the annual convention for general discussion, has accomplished much in this direction. In this work an attempt has been made to present to the reader glimpses of the field and to impress upon him something of the spirit of the work. Book Railroad Curves and Earthwork Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railroad Curves and Earthwork Classic Reprint written by C. Frank Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Curves and Earthwork Tms book was prepared for the use of the students in the author's classes. It has been used in lithographed sheets for a number of years in very nearly the present form, and has given satisfaction sufficient to suggest putting it in print. An effort has been made to have the demonstrations simple and direct, and special care has been given to the arrangement and the typography, in order to secure clearness and conciseness of mathematical statement. Much of the material in the earlier part of the book is necessarily similar to that found in one or more of several excellent field books, although the methods of demonstration are in many cases new. This will be found true especially in Compound Curves, for which simple treatment has been found quite possible. New material will be found in the chapters on Turnouts and on Y Tracks and Crossings. The Spiral Easement Curve is treated originally. The chapters on Earthwork are essentially new; they include Staking Out; Computation, directly and with Tables and Diagrams; also Haul, treated ordinarily and by Mass Diagram. Most of the material relating to Earthwork is not elsewhere readily available for students' use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Abbey masterfully combined journalistic and artistic vision to transform everyday transportation moments into magical photographs. Abbey, a photographer, journalist, historian, and railroad industry executive, helped people from many different backgrounds understand and appreciate what was taken for granted: a world of locomotives, passenger trains, big-city terminals, small-town depots, and railroaders.
