Book excerpt: The attitude toward seeking professional psychological help is an important concept in the literature related to psychological help-seeking behaviors. The present study aimed to investigate the attitudes of pre-service teachers toward seeking psychological help. Data was collected from 143 university students from the Faculty of Education. Construct was assessed using the abbreviated Turkish form of the "scale" "Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help (ASPH-S)" and a personal information form created by the researcher was utilized in order to obtain demographic and personal data. A general pattern of reluctance for help seeking was illustrated in the descriptive statistical results. No gender difference was found with respect to Attitude towards seeking psychological help. Attitude towards seeking psychological help had a significant correlation with age in the negative direction. Age correlated positively with actual history of professional psychological help and presence of educational experience about psychological help. Presence of educational experience about psychological help correlated positively with history of professional psychological help. Year in university correlated positively with presence of educational experience about psychological help. Income level correlated negatively with history of professional psychological help. The results and future implications are discussed.

Research group is composed of total of 301 students, educated at high schools in Burdur. The data have been obtained by SAPPH (Attitude Scale towards Professional Psychological Help) developed by researchers. According to research results, girls those who previously obtained professional psychological help and with democratically perceived parental attitudes have more positive attitudes towards professional psychological help. Book excerpt: Individuals' attitudes toward seeking psychological help play a major role in determining their actual help-seeking behavior. Among college student populations, research has focused on psychological help-seeking attitudes in an effort to understand the characteristics of college students who do and do not seek psychological treatment. These help-seeking attitudes have been found to be related to a variety of demographic and psychological variables. The present study investigated the extent to which differences in psychological help-seeking attitudes exist as a function of one particular demographic variable, field of study, in a university graduate student sample. Students in the social sciences were found to have significantly more positive help-seeking attitudes than students in both natural science and applied fields. Clinical Psychology students held the most positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help. These results may be of particular interest to college counseling center staff who wish to maximize the likelihood that students in need of psychological services actually seek treatment. Specific implications for counseling centers are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between racial identity, attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, and preference for an ethnically similar counselor in undergraduate students in a medium sized university in the midwest. Eighty-seven students who identified as White and 27 students who identified as an ethnic minority were given the White Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (Helms & Carter, 1993) or the People of Color Racial Identity Attitudes Scale, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale - Short Version (Fish & Farina, 1995), and four questions assessing counselor preference. Results indicated that White students who scored highest in the Reintegration status had less favorable attitudes toward counseling. In addition, White students scoring highest in the Immersion status had more favorable attitudes toward counseling.

By adopting the Mental Health Declaration and Action Plan for Europe they set the course for mental health policy for the next 5-10 years. Member States now face the challenge of acting on the principles of the Declaration and accomplishing the goals in the Action Plan's 12 areas of work. Book excerpt: Abstract Impact of Stigma on Attitudes towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help for Depression By Anna Dierks Master of Science in Community Health Education Minnesota State University, Mankato, 2016, 70 pages Depression is the most common mental illness, affecting almost seven percent of Americans each year. Although mental illness treatment through professional psychological services has been proven to be effective, underutilization of these services is high. Underutilization of seeking help could lead to serious consequences, such as suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults aged 15-34 years old and in 2013 the highest rates of suicide were among adults aged 45-64 years old. Stigma has been viewed as a barrier to seeking professional psychological help. Two age groups were chosen for this research due to the high rates of suicide (18-34 years old and 45-64 years old). This study collected data from a random sample of students, staff and faculty from a Midwestern college to see if there was a relationship between stigma and help-seeking attitudes in younger (aged 18-34) and older (aged 45-64) participants. Emergent findings were a) 15-24% of participants reported thoughts of self-harm at one point in their life, b) participants with higher personal stigma had more negative attitudes towards seeking help, c) younger participants and participants less educated reported higher levels of public stigma and more negative attitudes towards seeking help, and d) male participants reported higher levels of public stigma. Findings from this study suggest that there is a need for research to investigate and develop strategies to reduce stigma and improve help-seeking behaviors. Mental health promotion programs that target those younger, less educated, and male could prove to be helpful for health education specialists.

However, research examining the attitudes towards seeking mental health services and the effect such perceptions have on the propensity of public use is in its prime. Such knowledge is necessary for the benefit of the consumer as well as concerned mental health professional organizations. Furthermore, the ability to discriminate consumer perception based on the professional identity of the mental health service provider will serve as a benchmark for a young profession- counseling- to understand its current status in the minds of the general public, in comparison to related mental health professions, and for counseling professional organizations to better allocate resources aimed at professional advocacy efforts. As potential consumers of mental health services, it is of great merit to understand college students' perceptions of mental health professionals' therapeutic competence, and their attitudes towards seeking services based on the identity of the mental health service provider; i.e. counselor, psychologist, or social worker. This study provided an overview of - three helping professions: counseling, psychology, and social work. Additionally, it expanded upon the circumstances surrounding the origination of each discipline and their governing bodies, current vocational opportunities and average salaries for members of each discipline, the rationale for conducting this study and the psychometric properties of the instrument- the Inventory of Attitudes toward Seeking Mental Health Services (IASMHS)- utilized by this study. The primary hypothesis which suggested a significant difference in student perception of the mental health professional's level of competence with respect to the identity of the professional was tested. Additionally, student attitudes towards seeking mental health services were measured and a comparison on the basis of the identity of the helper was drawn. The research was unable to find statistical significance regarding the previously posed hypotheses. However, a significant difference was noted between the sexes and their propensity to seek mental health services such that the females in this sample were more likely to seek mental health services than were the male participants. Furthermore, a statistically significant and moderate relationship existed between the number of courses taken in a helping discipline and participants' attitudes towards seeking professional mental health services such that as the number of courses completed increased, so did the positive manner in which participants viewed seeking mental health services. The researcher concluded the study by addressing its limitations and discussing future suggestions for researchers.
