Book excerpt: This study describes an educational experience in a ninth grade problem based learning (PBL) science environment and examines student attitude toward and achievement in science along with student perceptions related to this educational experience. These variables were also measured for a comparison group of ninth grade science students and offer a way to compare the educational experiences of the two groups. Attitude toward science was assessed at the beginning and again at the end of the educational experience to determine differences in attitudes among and between the groups. Achievement in science was assessed using standardized test scores and student science grades. Student perceptions were assessed using a survey based on what students' perceive happens in their science classroom based on real world applications, problem solving, self-directed learning, and communication.

Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of problem-based active learning in science education on students' academic achievement and concept learning. In the study, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were utilized. Quantitative data were obtained via the pre/post-test, treatment-control groups test model. Qualitative data were obtained via document analysis. The research study was conducted on 50, 7th grade students in 2004-2005 school year, in a public school in Istanbul. The treatment process took 30 class hours in total. In the research, three measurement instruments were used: an achievement test, open-ended questions, and an attitude scale for science education. The reliability coefficient of the achievement test was calculated to be KR20=0.78. Cronbach a value of the attitude scale was 0.89. While the subject matters were taught on the basis of problem-based active learning in the treatment group, traditional teaching methods were employed in the control group. In the face of the data collected and the evaluations made in the research, it was determined that the implementation of problem-based active learning model had positively affected students' academic achievement and their attitudes towards the science course. It was also found that the application of problem-based active learning model affects students' conceptual development positively and keeps their misconceptions at the lowest level. Book excerpt: Preparing students for the real challenges in life is one of the most important goalsin education. Constructivism is an approach that uses real-life experiences toconstruct knowledge. Problem-Based Learning (PBL), for almost five decadesnow, has been the most innovative constructivist pedagogy used worldwide.However, with the rising popularity, there is a need to revisit empirical studiesregarding PBL to serve as a guide and basis for designing new studies, makinginstitutional policies, and evaluating educational curricula. This need has led theresearchers to do a meta-analysis to analyse the effectiveness of PBL on secondarystudents' achievement in different scientific disciplines. Following the set ofinclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 studies in Eurasia, Africa, and Americaconducted from 2016 to 2020 have qualified for this study. Six of which focusedon JHS (n = 1047) and five on SHS (n = 375). Studies were obtained from variousmeta-search engines including Google, ERIC, and JSTOR. Further, the researchersused Harzing's Publish and Perish software to exhaust the search process. Samplesize, mean, and standard deviation were analysed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3 to determine the effect sizes (Hedge's g) and the results ofmoderator analysis, forest plot, funnel plot, and Begg-Mazumdar test. Findingshave shown that PBL, as an approach to teaching science, had a large and positiveeffect (ES = .871) on the achievement of secondary students. However, gradelevels and various scientific disciplines did not influence students' learningachievement. The conduct of more studies on the different factors affecting PBLimplementation and specific effects of PBL on various student domains isrecommended to facilitate comparative educational research in the future.

Book excerpt: The subject of the book is advanced statistical analyses for quantitative research synthesis (meta-analysis), and selected practical issues relating to research synthesis that are not covered in detail in the many existing introductory books on research synthesis (or meta-analysis). Complex statistical issues are arising more frequently as the primary research that is summarized in quantitative syntheses itself becomes more complex, and as researchers who are conducting meta-analyses become more ambitious in the questions they wish to address. Also as researchers have gained more experience in conducting research syntheses, several key issues have persisted and now appear fundamental to the enterprise of summarizing research. Specifically the book describes multivariate analyses for several indices commonly used in meta-analysis (e.g., correlations, effect sizes, proportions and/or odds ratios), will outline how to do power analysis for meta-analysis (again for each of the different kinds of study outcome indices), and examines issues around research quality and research design and their roles in synthesis. For each of the statistical topics we will examine the different possible statistical models (i.e., fixed, random, and mixed models) that could be adopted by a researcher. In dealing with the issues of study quality and research design it covers a number of specific topics that are of broad concern to research synthesists. In many fields a current issue is how to make sense of results when studies using several different designs appear in a research literature (e.g., Morris & Deshon, 1997, 2002). In education and other social sciences a critical aspect of this issue is how one might incorporate qualitative (e.g., case study) research within a synthesis. In medicine, related issues concern whether and how to summarize observational studies, and whether they should be combined with randomized controlled trials (or even if they should be combined at all). For each topic, included is a worked example (e.g., for the statistical analyses) and/or a detailed description of a published research synthesis that deals with the practical (non-statistical) issues covered.
