Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Song of Songs, traditionally attributed to Solomon, is a collection of lyrics that celebrate in earthly terms the love of a bridegroom and a bride. Throughout the course of early Christian history, the Song of Songs was widely read as an allegory of the love of Christ both for the church and for its individual members. In reading the Song this way, Christians were following in the steps of Jewish exegetes who saw the Song as celebrating the love of God for Israel. In The Song of Songs, the inaugural volume of The Church's Bible, Richard A. Norris Jr. uses commentaries and sermons from the church's first millennium to illustrate the original Christian understanding of Solomon's beautiful poem. In recent times, the Song of Songs has been more a focus of literary than of religious interest, but Norris's work shows that for early Christians, this text was counted, with the Psalms and the Gospels, among those Scriptures that touched most deeply on the believer's relation to God. All in all, Norris's Song of Songs is a masterful work that aptly acquaints contemporary readers with the church's traditional way of discerning in this text a guide to the character of Christian belief and life. This volume -- and the entire Church's Bible series -- will be welcomed by preachers, teachers, students, and general readers alike.

Book Healing Performance and Ceremony in the Writings of Three Early Modern Physicians Hippolytus Guarinonius and the Brothers Felix and Thomas Platter

Download or read book Healing Performance and Ceremony in the Writings of Three Early Modern Physicians Hippolytus Guarinonius and the Brothers Felix and Thomas Platter written by M.A. Katritzky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the writings of early modern medical practitioners habitually touch on performance and ceremony, few illuminate them as clearly as the Protestant physicians Felix Platter and Thomas Platter the Younger, who studied in Montpellier and practiced in their birth town of Basle, or the Catholic physician Hippolytus Guarinonius, who was born in Trent, trained in Padua and practiced in Hall near Innsbruck. During his student years and brilliant career as early modern Basle's most distinguished municipal, court and academic physician, Felix Platter built up a wide network of private, religious and aristocratic patients. His published medical treatises and private journal record his professional encounters with them as a healer. They also offer numerous vivid accounts of theatrical events experienced by Platter as a scholar, student and gifted semi-professional musician, and during his Grand Tour and long medical career. Here Felix Platter's accounts, many unavailable in translation, are examined together with relevant extracts from the journals of his younger brother Thomas Platter, and Guarinonius's medical and religious treatises. Thomas Platter is known to Shakespeare scholars as the Swiss Grand Tourist who recorded a 1599 London performance of Julius Caesar, and Guarinonius's descriptions of quack performances represent the earliest substantial written record of commedia dell'arte lazzi, or comic stage business. These three physicians' records of ceremony, festival, theatre, and marketplace diversions are examined in detail, with particular emphasis on the reactions of 'respectable' medical practitioners to healing performers and the performance of healing. Taken as a whole, their writings contribute to our understanding of many aspects of European theatrical culture and its complex interfaces with early modern healthcare: in carnival and other routine manifestations of the Christian festive year, in the extraordinary performance and ceremony of court festivals, and above all in the rarely welcomed intrusions of quacks and other itinerant performers.

Book A Bride s Guide to Marriage and Murder

Download or read book A Bride s Guide to Marriage and Murder written by Dianne Freeman and published by Countess of Harleigh Mystery. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, returns in Dianne Freeman’s charming, lighthearted mystery set in Victorian England, and finds her wedding day overshadowed by murder . . . On the eve of her marriage to George Hazelton, Frances has a great deal more on her mind than flowers and seating arrangements. The Connors and the Bainbridges, two families of American robber barons, have taken up residence in London, and their bitter rivalry is spilling over into the highest social circles. At the request of her brother, Alonzo, who is quite taken with Miss Madeline Connor, Frances has invited the Connor family to her wedding. Meanwhile, Frances’s mother has invited Mr. Bainbridge, and Frances fears the nuptials may end up being newspaper-worthy for all the wrong reasons. On the day itself, Frances is relieved that Madeline’s father is not among the guests at the church. The reason, however, is most unfortunate: Mr. Connor is found murdered in his home. More shocking still, Alonzo is caught at the scene—holding the murder weapon. Powerful and ruthless, Connor appears to have amassed a wealth of enemies. Frances and George put their wedding trip on hold to try and clear Alonzo’s name. But there are secrets to sift through, not just in the feuding families, but also in their own. With a killer determined to evade discovery—even if it means taking another life—Frances’s newlywed days will be perilous indeed . . .

Book excerpt: Stud's Bride is book 3 and the finale of the Cobra Kings MC trilogy! They said I couldn't have her. I told them to try and stop me. The bad boy stud has wandered into dangerous territory. MC President Bishop Blaine thought bedding a pop star would be the story of a lifetime. He gets what he came for, and then some… When the diva ends up pregnant with his baby. LOLA I thought outlaw bikers were supposed to be tall, dark, tatted—and dumb as rocks. But Bishop Blaine is only three for four. And unfortunately for my sake, he's managed to outsmart every member of my security team to get to me. It's true: he's got his own selfish motives in mind. Like laying his sinful, inked hands over every inch of my body. But it turns out Bishop got to me just in time. First, we're ducking a spray of bullets. Then, next thing I know, he has me out back behind the bar… Pinned to the wall beneath him, as he lets far more than his eyes travel my forbidden figure. BISHOP Lola is famous. Off-limits. Totally uninterested in a rebel biker like me. Until I make things interesting for her. Granted, I've had help. Someone's out to kill her, and I smell a rat in her inner circle. She can't trust those who are already closest to her, so I plan on making myself as close as possible. I'm gonna run my filthy hands along those lush curves until I make the little pop starlet shiver and beg for more. But I should've known it would all lead to trouble. As I discover, it isn't just a killer we have on our plate. Because Lola turns up pregnant – and she swears the baby is mine. This was never supposed to happen. I'm an outlaw with a motorcycle club to run, not a whipped baby daddy to a famous actress. Until, all of the sudden, that's exactly what I am. But we're from two different worlds. She walks red carpets and wears expensive gowns. I ride choppers and keep my club kutte on my shoulders at all times. Having a baby together is sheer madness. But despite all that… There's something in my gut that says I have to protect these delicate creatures now – my woman and my baby. I'm going to catch this falling star and make her mine. And if the man hunting her thinks he's gonna lay a finger on my family... He'd better be ready for war.

Book excerpt: The question of individuality in non-European, and especially South Asian societies is a controversial one. Studies in anthropology and psychology undertaken in recent years on concepts of person and self approach the problem by concentrating on ideologies; the question of practice remains largely neglected. This is the first study to examine the individual-dividual debate empirically from the - emic - perspective of decision making, observed over a two-year period among the Bakkarwal, Himalayan Muslim pastoralists. Of particular significance is the fact that the author bases her approach on the life cycle and on gender and status differences.
