Book excerpt: Gerald 'Gerry' Rafferty, born on 16th April 1947, Underwood Lane, Ferguslie Park, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, UK was a musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. His solo hits of the late '70s included Baker Street, Right Down the Line and Night Owl, following another with the band Stealers Wheel during 1973, 'Stuck in the Middle with You'. Gerry's mum taught him Irish and Scottish folk songs when he was growing up, later being influenced by The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Rafferty joined the folk-pop group The Humblebums in 1969 then recorded his 1st solo album, Can I Have My Money Back? after they folded during 1971. Gerry formed the group Stealers Wheel with Joe Egan the following year, having several hits, including Stuck in the Middle with You and Star. Rafferty recorded his 2nd solo L.P, City to City in 1978, which produced Baker Street, his biggest hit.

The number of clicks is considerably impressive: the most popular video on the website counts more than 44 million views since July 2010. The original music video shows the band with Joe Eagan alternately performing in a big, empty building and him being at a banquet table, surrounded by odd guises, unsuccessfully trying to get some food from the table. Comparing the top comments to the video shown, some incoherence becomes visible. For instance, user ‘nosferotica’ writes: ‘Last time I listened to this song I cut someone’s ear off.’ (YouTube, 2016). Another user asks if anyone could listen to the song, ‘without thinking of torture anymore’ (YouTube, 2016). Without knowing the linkage of the song to one of the most iconic scenes in later film history, these comments make no sense at all. Moreover, we must agree with Quentin Tarantino, who said ‘that certain pop songs have been used so successfully in certain movies that in a sense the movie blots out all other associations and ‘owns’ the song . In the case of ‘Stuck in the middle with you’ and the ‘infamous’ torture scene in Tarantino’s debut film Reservoir Dogs (1992), this statement does fully apply, as the song originally is about an annoying record biz dinner that Eagan and Rafferty had to attend . Tarantino’s debut became cult over the years, considered to have notably inspired further independent cinema. The quintessence of Tarantino’s idea of film making is already identifiable in his rough debut: cool characters and violence combined with deadpan humour plus a fantastic soundtrack.

After developing a passion for several genres of popular music during childhood, from traditional folk and classical to rock'n'roll and the early 1960s beat boom, he played in a couple of bands during his teens. After joining The Humblebums, an acoustic duo with future stand-up comedian Billy Connolly, and releasing a solo album Can I Have My Money Back?, he formed Stealers Wheel, whose debut spawned the transatlantic top ten hit 'Stuck In The Middle With You'. Initially a five-piece band and finally a duo, they split in 1975. He resumed his solo career three years later with the single 'Baker Street' and accompanying album City To City, the global successes of which proved impossible to surpass. Although he disliked many aspects of the music business, rarely toured, never played live in America, and became increasingly reclusive in later years, he released eight more albums before his death in 2011, with a posthumous collection Rest In Blue following ten years later. This book examines in detail all his recorded songs, some of them quite starkly autobiographical in content, from every stage of his career.
