Book Struwwelpeter

Download or read book Struwwelpeter written by Heinrich Hoffmann and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-06 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 Reprint. English Translation REPRODUCED IN FULL COLOR. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. First published in 1845 in German, Struwwelpeter (variously translated as "slovenly" or "shock-headed" Peter) has become widely recognized as one of the most popular and influential children's books ever written. Heinrich Hoffmann was a Frankfurt physician. Unhappy with the dry and pedagogic books available for children at the time, he wrote and illustrated Struwwelpeter as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son. The book relates in verse and pictures the sometimes gruesome consequences that befall children who torment animals, play with matches, suck their thumbs, refuse to eat, fidget at meals, etc. Written in rhyming couplets and illustrated by the author, the book was an immediate success. Each of the ten chapters has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book. Struwwelpeter is one of the earliest books for children that combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format and is considered a precursor to comic books. It has since gone through hundreds of editions and been published in almost every European language. The present volume reprints 25 color plates from a German with the text of a standard English translation.

Students of this subject have had problems in finding a book that attempted an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the field. Gillian Lathey's Reader does just this. Book Translating and Transmediating Children s Literature

Download or read book Translating and Transmediating Children s Literature written by Anna Kérchy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Struwwelpeter to Peter Rabbit, from Alice to Bilbo—this collection of essays shows how the classics of children’s literature have been transformed across languages, genres, and diverse media forms. This book argues that translation regularly involves transmediation—the telling of a story across media and vice versa—and that transmediation is a specific form of translation. Beyond the classic examples, the book also takes the reader on a worldwide tour, and examines, among other things, the role of Soviet science fiction in North Korea, the ethical uses of Lego Star Wars in a Brazilian context, and the history of Latin translation in children’s literature. Bringing together scholars from more than a dozen countries and language backgrounds, these cross-disciplinary essays focus on regularly overlooked transmediation practices and terminology, such as book cover art, trans-sensory storytelling, écart, enfreakment, foreignizing domestication, and intra-cultural transformation.

Book Mediating Practices in Translating Children s Literature

Download or read book Mediating Practices in Translating Children s Literature written by Joanna Dybiec-Gajer and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the book is to investigate mediating practices used in translation of children's and young adults' fiction, focusing on transfer of contents considered controversial or unsuitable for young audiences. It shows how the macabre and cruelty, swear words and bioethical issues have been affected in translation across cultures and times. Analysing selected key texts from Grimms' tales and Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter to Roald Dahl's fiction, it shows that mediating approaches, sometimes infringing upon the integrity of source texts, are still part of contemporary translation practices. The volume includes contributions of renowned TS scholars and practitioners, working with a variety of approaches from descriptive translation studies and literary criticism to translation pedagogy and museum studies. "The angle of looking into the topics is fresh and acute and I whole-heartedly recommend the book for readers from scholars to parents and school-teachers, for all adults taking a special interest in and cherishing children and their literature". Riitta Oittinen, Tampere University, Finland
