Book The Struggle for Scutari Turk Slav and Albanian

Download or read book The Struggle for Scutari Turk Slav and Albanian written by Edith Durham and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Struggle for Scutari," originally published in 1914, was the fourth book of the English traveller and writer Edith Durham (1863-1944). She had already made a name for herself with "Through the Lands of the Serb" (1904), "The Burden of the Balkans" (1905) and especially "High Albania" (1909). This book is perhaps Durham's most ambitious piece of writing. It is the fruit of her longest stay in the Balkans (mostly in Montenegro and Albania) - three and a half years from April 1910 to September 1913. "The Struggle for Scutari" deals with the border conflict, and then with the bloody war waged by the tiny Kingdom of Montenegro under King Nikola upon a crumbling Ottoman Empire, of which Albania was still a part. Caught in the middle of the conflict, between a rock and a hard place, were the Albanian highland tribes that Edith Durham knew and loved. "The Struggle for Scutari" is not only a reliable source of history for the period between 1910 and 1913, based as it is on first-hand experience, but also facilitates an understanding of events in the Balkans up to this very day.

Download or read book The Struggle for Scutari written by M. Edith Durham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-21 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Struggle for Scutari: Turk, Slav, and Albanian None who have not lived through the past few years on the spot can imagine the fraud, the treachery, the cold-blooded cruelty and brutality with which the various rulers of Europe have striven, each against each, to obtain, by hook or by crook, possession of, or influence over, that little corner of land in the Near East which has been lately the seat of war, and is now the seat of hopeless misery. To detail the mass of suffering which I myself have witnessed would take several volumes of monotonous horror. To unravel the complicated mesh of intrigues and lies would be impossible. I have tried only to tell a plain tale of the main facts that came directly under my notice, and in no way to write a history of the war. Book Florence Nightingale The Crimean War

Download or read book Florence Nightingale The Crimean War written by Lynn McDonald and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 1096 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florence Nightingale is famous as the “lady with the lamp” in the Crimean War, 1854—56. There is a massive amount of literature on this work, but, as editor Lynn McDonald shows, it is often erroneous, and films and press reporting on it have been even less accurate. The Crimean War reports on Nightingale’s correspondence from the war hospitals and on the staggering amount of work she did post-war to ensure that the appalling death rate from disease (higher than that from bullets) did not recur. This volume contains much on Nightingale’s efforts to achieve real reforms. Her well-known, and relatively “sanitized”, evidence to the royal commission on the war is compared with her confidential, much franker, and very thorough Notes on the Health of the British Army, where the full horrors of disease and neglect are laid out, with the names of those responsible.

Download or read book The Question of Scutari Classic Reprint written by Andre Radovitch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Question of Scutari It is well known that the creation of an Albanian State is not the result of an Albanian struggle for freedom or union. Austria Hungary wanted to create under the name of Albania, an Austrian pro vince in order to erect thus one more obstacle to the development of the Serbian nation. The Albanian tribes, especially those inhabiting the environs of Scutari, have absolutely no feeling of nationality, no notion of a State. Although the enemies of Montenegro frequently made use of these tribes in order to cause troubles on the frontier, the tribes of the environs of Scutari have often given proof of their desire to join with the Montenegrins in order to fight against the Turkish regime. This same thing occurred again both in 1910 and 1912. Several times, especially in 1873, Montenegrin chiefs helped to reconcile hostile Albanian tribes.
