Book Structures and Dynamics of Self Assembled Organized Functional Polymers in Solution

Download or read book Structures and Dynamics of Self Assembled Organized Functional Polymers in Solution written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fruitful results were achieved by investigating the structure and dynamics of self-assembled diblock and triblock copolymers by means of a combination of physical techniques, including static and dynamic light scattering, small angle x-ray scattering, small angle neutron scattering and atomic force microscopy. The polymer colloids are able to form core-shell micelles in a closed association process, as well as flower-like and more open-structured aggregates, depending on the molecular architecture, composition and solvent selectivity of the block. A detailed study on even a few selected samples of Pluronic polyols consisting of EPE type triblock copolymers in aqueous solution has resulted in the development of a new separation medium for DNA capillary electrophoresis where E and P are, respectively, oxyethylene and oxypropylene. By taking advantage of our knowledge on colloid physics, narrow size distribution polymeric microspheres with superparamagnetic magnetite cores are being developed. The polymeric shells contain active sites which can be modified chemically, making the microspheres possible candidates as drug delivery or magnetic resonance imaging agents. Finally, we have developed a centrifuge ball viscometer capable of measuring the viscosity of polymer melts, including that of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (also known as Teflon).

Book Structure and Dynamics of Confined Polymers

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Confined Polymers written by John J. Kasianowicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers are essential to biology because they can have enough stable degrees of freedom to store the molecular code of heredity and to express the sequences needed to manufacture new molecules. Through these they perform or control virtually every function in life. Although some biopolymers are created and spend their entire career in the relatively large free space inside cells or organelles, many biopolymers must migrate through a narrow passageway to get to their targeted destination. This suggests the questions: How does confining a polymer affect its behavior and function? What does that tell us about the interactions between the monomers that comprise the polymer and the molecules that confine it? Can we design and build devices that mimic the functions of these nanoscale systems? The NATO Advanced Research Workshop brought together for four days in Bikal, Hungary over forty experts in experimental and theoretical biophysics, molecular biology, biophysical chemistry, and biochemistry interested in these questions. Their papers collected in this book provide insight on biological processes involving confinement and form a basis for new biotechnological applications using polymers. In his paper Edmund DiMarzio asks: What is so special about polymers? Why are polymers so prevalent in living things? The chemist says the reason is that a protein made of N amino acids can have any of 20 different kinds at each position along the chain, resulting in 20 N different polymers, and that the complexity of life lies in this variety.

Book Rigid Rod Polymers in Confined Geometries

Download or read book Rigid Rod Polymers in Confined Geometries written by Vladimir Kitaev and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines properties of rigid-rod polymers in confined geometries. Organization of polymers in self-assembled layers on a single surface, and thin polymer films confined between two solid substrates has been studied. Adsorption and self-assembly of rigid-rod polypeptides from dilute solution onto a single surface was studied by Atomic Force Microscopy supplemented by Dynamic Light Scattering. Various factors affecting organization of self-assembled layers were examined: the nature of the surface and solvents; polymer architecture, molecular weight, polydispersity, and concentration. It was shown that polypeptides assemble into fiber-like structures onto a hydrophilic mica surface via dipole-charge interactions, while on a hydrophobized surface adsorption is suppressed. Different types of substrates used for polypeptide self-assembly and Surface Force Balance (SFB) studies were obtained by modification of atomically smooth mica surfaces with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and mixed monolayers. An established protocol of mica silanization with OTS produced smooth and stable hydrophobic surfaces. Two approaches to the preparation of mixed monolayers involving (i) self-assembly of cationic surfactants and (ii) silanization were thoroughly examined. Properties of poly(ã-n-hexyl-L-glutamate) (PHLG) layers confined between two mica surfaces were studied using the SFB technique. Normal and shear forces in PHLG layers were examined for different types of confining surfaces as a function of polymer concentration in solution and for various shear parameters. The shear response of the confined PHLG layers was analyzed using rheological models developed in this work. PHLG layers confined between the bare mica surfaces exhibited strong hydrodynamic interactions characteristic of the rheological regime of friction. In contrast, polymer layers confined between the hydrophobically modified surfaces displayed moderate shear forces with the onset of shear interactions shifted to shorter intersurface separations. The shear response was dominated by slip and thus was formally characteristic of the tribological regime of friction. Finally, reversible liquification of the PHLG layers was observed and discussed. To analyze orientational transitions of rigid-rod polymers in constrained geometries, an analytical model based on analysis of birefringence in SFB was developed. This model was tested with low-molecular weight liquid crystals (LCs) under different experimental conditions. Good agreement between the model and the experimental data was found.

Book Nanocomposite Structures and Dispersions

Download or read book Nanocomposite Structures and Dispersions written by Ignac Capek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-07-20 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanocomposite Structures and Dispersions deals with the preparation of gelled, branched and crosslinked nanostructured polymers in the solution free radical polymerization and controlled/living radical polymerization and polymer and composite nanoparticles and nanostructures in disperse systems, the kinetics of direct and inverse disperse polymerizations (microemulsion, miniemulsion, emulsion, dispersion and suspension polymerization), the bottom-up approach building of functionalized nanoparticles, modelling of radical microemulsion polymerization, the characterization of traditional and non-traditional polymer dispersions, the collective properties of nanomaterials and their (bio)applications. This book is designed to bridge that gap and offers several unique features. First, it is written as an introduction to and survey of nanomaterials with a careful balance between basics and advanced topics. Thus, it is suitable for both beginners and experts, including graduate and upper-level undergraduate students. Second, it strives to balance the colloidal aspects of nanomaterials with physical principles. Third, the book highlights nanomaterial based architectures including composite or hybrid conjugates rather than only isolated nanoparticles. A number of ligands have been utilized to biodecorate the polymer and composite nanocarriers. Finally, the book provides an in depth discussion of important examples of reaction mechanisms of bottom-up building of functionalized nanoparticles, or potential applications of nanoarchitectures, ranging from physical to chemical and biological systems. Free radical (controlled) polymerization, branching, crosslinking and gelling Kinetics and mechanism of polymer nanoparticles formation Modelling of radical polymerization in disperse systems Polymer, composite and metal nanoparticles, nanostructures and nanomaterials Smart nanostructures, biodecorated particles, nanocarriers and therapeutics
