This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first concern of scientists who are interested in synthetic polymers has always been, and still is: How are they synthesized? But right after this comes the question: What have I made, and for what is it good? This leads to the important topic of the structure-property relations to which this book is devoted. Polymers are very large and very complicated systems; their character ization has to begin with the chemical composition, configuration, and con formation of the individual molecule. The first chapter is devoted to this broad objective. The immediate physical consequences, discussed in the second chapter, form the basis for the physical nature of polymers: the supermolecular interactions and arrangements of the individual macromolecules. The third chapter deals with the important question: How are these chemical and physical structures experimentally determined? The existing methods for polymer characterization are enumerated and discussed in this chapter. The following chapters go into more detail. For most applications-textiles, films, molded or extruded objects of all kinds-the mechanical and the thermal behaviors of polymers are of pre ponderant importance, followed by optical and electric properties. Chapters 4 through 9 describe how such properties are rooted in and dependent on the chemical structure. More-detailed considerations are given to certain particularly important and critical properties such as the solubility and permeability of polymeric systems. Macromolecules are not always the final goal of the chemist-they may act as intermediates, reactants, or catalysts. This topic is presented in Chapters 10 and 11.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the surprise of practically no one, research and engineering on multi polymer materials has steadily increased through the 1960s and 1970s. More and more people are remarking that we are running out of new monomers to polymerize, and that the improved polymers of the future will depend heavily on synergistic combinations of existing materials. In the era of the mid-1960s, three distinct multipolymer combinations were recognized: polymer blends, grafts, and blocks. Although inter penetrating polymer networks, lPNs, were prepared very early in polymer history, and already named by Millar in 1960, they played a relatively low-key role in polymer research developments until the late 1960s and 1970s. I would prefer to consider the IPNs as a subdivision of the graft copolymers. Yet the unique topology of the IPNs imparts properties not easily obtainable without the presence of crosslinking. One of the objectives of this book is to point out the wealth of work done on IPNs or closely related materials. Since many papers and patents actually concerned with IPNs are not so designated, this literature is significantly larger than first imagined. It may also be that many authors will meet each other for the first time on these pages and realize that they are working on a common topology. The number of applications suggested in the patent literature is large and growing. Included are impact-resistant plastics, ion exchange resins, noise-damping materials, a type of thermoplastic elastomer, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This broadly-based work gathers the vast bulk of information published on cyclopolymerization since its discovery - including the symmetrical diene counterparts of all classical monomers that can undergo addition polymerization, all unsymmetrical dienes, and cyclopolymerizable monomers such as dialdehydes, diynes, diisocyanates, diepoxides, dinitriles, and some organometallic monomers.;Providing access to contemporary knowledge in the field and offering discussions of interest to a wide variety of polymer scientists, Cyclopolymerization and Cyclocopolymerization: delineates theory; summarizes polymerization procedures; furnishes theoretical justification for mechanistic proposals; details commercial applications; and describes new monomer syntheses. Supplying over 2700 references as well as chemical abstract citations, Cyclopolymerization and Cyclocopolymerization is a resource which should be of practical value to polymer, academic, theoretical and industrial chemists; chemical and plastics engineers; research and development directors in chemistry and chemical engineering programmes; and graduate-level students in these disciplines

Download or read book Sequence Controlled Polymers written by Jean-François Lutz and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by a leading authority in the field, the first book on this important and emerging topic provides an overview of the latest trends in sequence-controlled polymers. Following a brief introduction, the book goes on to discuss various synthetic approaches to sequence-controlled polymers, including template polymerization, genetic engineering and solid-phase chemistry. Moreover, monomer sequence regulation in classical polymerization techniques such as step-growth polymerization, living ionic polymerizations and controlled radical polymerizations are explained, before concluding with a look at the future for sequence-controlled polymers. With its unique coverage of this interdisciplinary field, the text will prove invaluable to polymer and environmental chemists, as well as biochemists and bioengineers.
Download or read book Specialty Monomers and Polymers written by Kathleen O. Havelka and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike generic plastics, specialty polymers are custom tailored for specific applications and are typically used in higher value products requiring improved performance. Interest in the field is growing steadily, and this book examines the recent advances in the synthesis, fundamental understanding and applications of specialty polymers. It is comprehensive in scope, covering and providing current information on topics ranging from the fundamentals to polymer synthesis and applications. Emphasis is placed on a nummber of materials issues including: developing a fundamental understanding of structure-property relationship that will lead to the rational design of polymers from specialty monomores, the synthesis of specialty monomers, and the elegant chemistry performed with these monomers to obtain polymers with unique properties.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological requirements are forcing a change in tech nology of industrially applied coatings. At present sol vent-borne coatings dominate this field but in the next few years rapidly increasing use will be made of aqueous coatings, electrocoating, solvent-free liquid coatings which can be cured by U. V.-light or electronbeam, and powder coatings. This monograph describes some recent developments in these new "non-polluting" coating technologies. It is impossible to predict how big a share each of these novel coatings will take from the conventional in dustrial finishes market which at present represents an annual volume of about one billion dollars. In all likeli hood each will find its own specialized use. We hope that this monograph will help the reader to form a perspective of the various novel coatings, their method of application, their advantages and their limitations. J. L. Gardon Joseph W. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
