This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interrelation among composition, microstructure, and properties of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric compounds is a major field of research for both scientific and technological reasons. As such, this book focuses on metal oxides, which present a large diversity of electrical, magnetic, optical, optoelectronic, thermal, electrochemical, and catalytic properties, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. By bringing together scientific contributions with special emphasis on the interrelations between materials chemistry, processing, microstructures, and properties of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric metal oxides, this book highlights the importance of tightly integrating high-throughput experiments (including both synthesis and characterization) and efficient and robust theory for the design of advanced materials.

Book Nonstoichiometric Oxides

Download or read book Nonstoichiometric Oxides written by O.T. Soerensen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonstoichiometric Oxides discusses the thermodynamic and structural studies of nonstoichiometric oxides. This eight-chapter text also covers the defect-defect interactions in these compounds. The introductory chapters describe the thermodynamic properties of nonstoichiometric oxides in terms of defect complexes using the classical thermodynamic principles and from a statistical thermodynamics point of view. These chapters also include statistical thermodynamic models that indicate the ordered nonstoichiometric phase range in these oxides. The subsequent chapters examine the transport properties, such as diffusion and electrical conductivity. Diffusion theories and experimental diffusion coefficients for several systems, as well as the electrical properties of the highly defective ionic and mixed oxide conductor, are specifically tackled in these chapters. The concluding chapters present the pertinent results obtained in nonstoichiometric oxide structural studies using high-resolution electron microscopy and X-ray and neutron diffraction. Inorganic chemists and inorganic chemistry teachers and students will greatly appreciate this book.

Book Non Stoichiometric Oxides Structure Texture Thermodynamics and Magnetic Properties

Download or read book Non Stoichiometric Oxides Structure Texture Thermodynamics and Magnetic Properties written by B. G. Hyde and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermodynamics of the titanium-oxygen system was studied in the composition range of Ti3O5 to TiO2 at 1304K and the anion diffusion rates measured. There was no very marked trend in the diffusion coefficient with composition. A novel technique for studying oxidation/reduction mechanisms in transitional-metal oxides by direct observation in the electron microscope was developed. Studies of rutile-related systems were completed. It revealed the phenomenon of 'swinging CS planes, ' where by rotation of the CS plane direction a continuous sequence of fully ordered structures of varying composition is passible. Magnetic susceptibility of the titanium oxide systems were studied as a function of composition and temperature. The magnetic anisotropy of single crystals in the same composition range has been measured.

Book Non Stoichiometric Oxides of 3d Metals

Download or read book Non Stoichiometric Oxides of 3d Metals written by Andrzej Stok?osa and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2015-03-18 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present work, in Part I, new elements widening the bases of the defects theory are shown; particularly, this work discusses the mechanism of the formation of defects as a result of elementary processes; the work also presents a description of the equilibrium state by one equation, taking into account the concentrations of defects and their changes during the process of reaching the equilibrium. The equation relates the concentrations of defects, dependent on the standard Gibbs energies of their formation, with the equilibrium pressure of oxygen. The obtained relations and the discussion have lead to the development of a method for determination of complete diagrams of concentrations of the point defects, which allows taking into account the minority defects. Part II presents the results of the calculations of the diagrams of point defects’ concentrations for a series of pure and doped oxides of transition metals 3d, with different composition (M/O ratio), crystallographic structure and point defects’ structure. A critical analysis of the results of the studies of the deviation from the stoichiometry and the electrical conductivity, obtained (so far) by most research groups has been also performed. A new interpretation of these results, concerning concentrations and types of ionic defects present has been performed and the mobility of electronic defects and its dependence on the temperature and oxygen pressure have been determined.

Book Processing of Crystalline Ceramics

Download or read book Processing of Crystalline Ceramics written by Hare and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the November 7-9, 1977 Conference on PROCESSING OF CRYSTALLINE CERAMICS, held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. It was the Fourteenth in a series of "University Conferences on Ceramic Science" initiated in 1964 and still coordinated by a founding group of four ceramic related institutions, of which North Carolina State University is a charter member, along with the University of California at Berkeley, Notre Dame University, and the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In addition, two other ceramic-oriented schools, the University of Florida and Case-Western Reserve University, have also hosted Conferences in the series. These research-oriented conferences, each uniquely concerned with a timely ceramic theme, have been well attended by audiences which typically were both inter national and interdisciplinary in character; their published Proceedings have been well received and are frequently cited. This three day conference was concerned with (a) scientific aspects of all process steps which must be combined and controlled effectively and sequentially in producing crystalline ceramics (both oxides and nonoxides), and (b) utilization of these principles in developing processes for several classes of advanced ceramics critical to present and future technology.

Book Structure Property Relationships of Oxide Surfaces and Interfaces II Volume 751

Download or read book Structure Property Relationships of Oxide Surfaces and Interfaces II Volume 751 written by Materials Research Society. Meeting and published by . This book was released on 2003-05-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because surfaces and interfaces found in oxide systems are strikingly complex, they can only be fully understood when examined at an atomic level. Yet for the materials scientist, such understanding is of paramount importance since future technological advances require it. This book, the second in a new series from the Materials Research Society, addresses structure-property relationships in these systems. Compared to the first proceedings, here we see a shift towards less well-defined materials that often more closely resemble reality, and an increasing effort to study these phenomena using in situ techniques. Of particular interest are discussions on the dynamical evolution of surface structure and relationships between the structure of surfaces, their stoichiometry and the distribution of bulk dislocations, which in turn can control the growth and retraction of islands and pits. Modeling and characterization of thin intergranular films, with a focus on how these films influence the properties of so many ceramic materials, are also addressed.

Book Structure property Relationships of Oxides with Hexagonal AMO3 and Brownmillerite Related Structures

Download or read book Structure property Relationships of Oxides with Hexagonal AMO3 and Brownmillerite Related Structures written by Peng Jiang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides exhibit potential in various application fields due to the special d-electrons. Solid state chemistry focuses on discovering the structure-property relationships. The work in this thesis mainly discusses compounds with hexagonal or brownmillerite-type structure and their practical properties. Hexagonal YIn[subscript 1-x]Fe[subscript x]O3 (x = 0-0.3, 0.7-1.0) phases have been prepared and characterized. All phases appear to have the ferroelectric structure known for YInO3. The color of the phases changes from yellow to orange to dark red with increasing Fe content. Magnetic measurements confirm high-spin Fe3 for all phases. Similarly, solid solution YAl[subscript 1-x]Fe[subscript x]O3 (x = 0-0.4, 0.7-1.0) phases were successfully synthesized through the sol-gel method. The Al-rich compounds present paraelectric YAlO3 structure while the Fe-rich side samples exhibit YFeO3 structure. The color of the compounds appear to be yellow with small Fe content and change to brown which has higher Fe content. Brownmillerite-type oxides Ba2In[subscript 2-x]Mn[subscript x]O[subscript 5+x] (x = 0.1-0.7) have been prepared and characterized. Magnetic measurements confirm that Mn in as prepared samples is substituting as Mn5 for all values of x with observed paramagnetic spin-only moments close to values expected for two unpaired electrons. Neutron diffraction structure refinements show Mn5+ occupies tetrahedral sites for orthorhombic (x = 0.1) and tetragonal (x = 0.2) phases. For Mn e"0.3 samples, neutron refinements show the phases are cubic with disordered cations and oxygen vacancies. The colors of the phases change from light yellow (x = 0) to intense turquoise (x =0.1), to green (x = 0.2, 0.3) or dark green (x e"0.4). Solid solution Ba2In[subscript 2-x]Fe[subscript x]O[subscript 5+y] (x = 0.1-1.5) also exhibit brownmillerite-type structure. The color of the compounds appear to be green with small Fe content and change to black with higher Fe content (x e"0.3). Magnetic measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy conclude the mixed valence of Fe3+/Fe4+ for all the phases. Nonstoichiometry compound YCu0.6Ti0.4O[subscript 3-delta] has been prepared and characterized. Structure study indicates that oxygen vacancy is favored under the synthesis condition. This change in oxygen content was further studied in the Mn-doped system. And the effect of stoichiometric difference in the Mn-doped samples was not as obvious as the initial compound. The disorder in the cation site enhanced the tolerance of the structure in the aspect of oxygen content. The hexagonal phases LnCu0.5Ti0.5O3 (Ln = Y, Tb-Lu) phases were prepared by the traditional solid state reactions. The prepared compounds were reduced at high temperature in the reduction atmosphere created by the H2/N2 gas mixture. Study on the structure and properties changes by reduction was conducted by X-ray diffraction, optical measurement, magnetic measurement and thermalgravimetric analysis. And we observed some evidence of the presence of Cu+ in the reduced phase by these characterization methods. Solid solution YMn[subscript x]Ti[subscript y]O[subscript 3-delta] (y = 0.1-0.4) was successfully prepared through conventional solid state approach. All the samples showed hexagonal structure. But the structure transition from ferroelectric P63cm to paraelectric P63/mmc occurred when Ti amount is higher than 0.2. Based on the neutron diffraction refinement, the lattice expanded in the ab plane but contracted along the c axis direction.
