Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's aim has been to draw together the threads of political and social science and of sub-specialisms within those broad areas of study and to interpret them in the context of urban and regional planning. Consideration is given to various interpretations of decision making in a democracy, to 'representation' and the public interest, to the opportunities for citizen participation in the planning process, to the range of potential participants, their motivation and competence, to the means which may be employed to secure different levels of citizen involvement; and to the impediments to meaningful participation. Therefore this book will contribute to the closing of the existing gap between theory and practice by drawing together a diversity of themes from political science, philosophy and psychology, community theory and regional science, rendering them comprehensible in the context of planning

Download or read book Planning and the Rural Environment written by Joan Davidson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning and the Rural Environment examines the environmental issues affecting countryside planning. Emphasis is placed on the look and feel of the open countryside, the function and appearance of the rural environment, rather than the problems of its people and the settlements in which they live. Also discussed is the conflict of interest generated between some of the major planning systems concerned with the development of rural activities and the protection of rural resources. Comprised of 13 chapters, this volume begins with an assessment of conflicting views of how a countryside of the future should develop and the degree of control and direction that should take place. The following chapters consider how the emerging range of environmental problems and opportunities in rural planning can best be illustrated. In particular, the dominance of agriculture as a rural activity is analyzed, together with forest and woodland management; leisure activity in the countryside; and conservation of resources and wildlife. The next section is devoted to uplands and the urban fringe, paying particular attention to some of the ways in which rural interests interact in two very different areas. Finally, the development of rural planning is reviewed and issues that are expected to shape the countryside of the future are considered. This book should be of interest to postgraduate students of rural planning and specialists in various fields of countryside planning.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Archaeological Association's 2007 conference celebrated the material culture of medieval Coventry, the fourth wealthiest English city of the later middle ages. The nineteen papers collected in this volume set out to remedy the relative neglect in modern scholarship of the city's art, architecture and archaeology, as well as to encompass recent research on monuments in the vicinity. The scene is set by two papers on archaeological excavations in the historic city centre, especially since the 1970s, and a paper investigating the relationships between Coventry's building boom and economic conditions in the city in the later middle ages. Three papers on the Cathedral Priory of St Mary bring together new insights into the Romanesque cathedral church, the monastic buildings and the post-Dissolution history of the precinct, derived mainly from the results of the Phoenix Initiative excavations (19992003). Three more papers provide new architectural histories of the spectacular former parish church of St Michael, the fine Guildhall of St Mary and the remarkable surviving west range of the Coventry Charterhouse. The high-quality monumental art of the later medieval city is represented by papers on wall-painting (featuring the recently conserved Doom in Holy Trinity church), on the little-known Crucifixion mural at the Charterhouse, and on a reassessment of the working practices of the famous master-glazier, John Thornton. Two papers on a guild seal and on the glazing at Stanford on Avon parish church consider the evidence for Coventry as a regional workshop centre for high quality metalwork and glass-painting. Beyond the city, three papers deal with the development of Combe Abbey from Cistercian monastery to country house, with the Beauchamp family's hermitage at Guy's Cliffe, and with a newly identified stonemasons' workshop in the 'barn' at Kenilworth Abbey. Two further papers concern the architectural patronage of the earls and dukes of Lancaster in the 14th century at Kenilworth Castle and in the Newarke at Leicester Castle.

Download or read book Alternative Visions of Post War Reconstruction written by John Pendlebury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of post Second World War reconstruction has recently become an important field of research around the world; Alternative Visions of Post-War Reconstruction is a provocative work that questions the orthodoxies of twentieth century design history. This book provides a key critical statement on mid-twentieth century urban design and city planning, focused principally upon the period between the start of the Second World War to the mid-sixties. The various figures and currents covered here represent a largely overlooked field within the history of 20th century urbanism. In this period while certain modernist practices assumed an institutional role for post-war reconstruction and flourished into the mainstream, such practices also faced opposition and criticism leading to the production of alternative visions and strategies. Spanning from a historically-informed modernism to the increasing presence of urban conservation the contributors examine these alternative approaches to the city and its architecture.
