Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure, Function, Integration: Journal of the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute is the professional journal representing the field of Rolfing® Structural Integration. It has been in continuous publication for some forty years, initially as The Bulletin of Structural Integration and later as Rolf Lines. The March 2019 issue (Volume 47, No. 1) of Structure, Function, Integration: Journal of the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute¿ begins a theme on the Ten Series of Rolfing® Structural Integration (SI), the ten-session series that our founder Ida Rolf conceived as both a teaching methodology and a 'Recipe' for aligning the human body in gravity. As there is so much to say, this issue will present Part 1 of that theme, focusing on Ten-Series history (the early Recipe as taught in the 1950s, and the modern Recipe as Rolf herself taught it), its internal order and complexity of the Recipe, and thoughts on teaching and practicing the Ten Series. (Part 2 will be in the June 2019 issue.)Our regular columns cover Rolfing SI and Sports, with a discussion of working with athletes, including elite professionals; fascia insights as gleaned from research into stretching fascia by Helene Langevin and her team; and a discussion of the Ten Series by Dr. Ida Rolf Institute¿ faculty. Our Perspectives section covers a discussion of the origin and spiritual dimension of Rolfing SI, a contemplation of ninja movement arts in relation to Rolfing embodiment, and tributes to Rosemary Feitis and Vivian Jaye, two important figures in our history. Feitis provided seminal assistance to Ida Rolf with the early trainings, the founding of the Institute, and the publication of Rolf's books, launching Rolfing SI into the public and professional sphere. Jaye, in turn, was a luminary of Rolf Movement® Integration. Along with her close collaborator Jane Harrington, she made key developments in the work itself and how it is taught, and nurtured Rolf Movement work to a coequal place and in the overall Rolfing curriculum.

Book excerpt: The March 2023 issue of Structure, Function, Integration: The Journal of the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute (Volume 51, Issue 1) is focused on 'A Regional Study of the Pelvis'. Two of our articles feature interviews with Rolfing® SI Instructors, one about the pelvic relationships addressed by Dr. Ida Rolf's 'Ten Series' and the other about fascia, pain, and the pelvis. We also have a thought-provoking conversation with anatomist Dr. Gil Hedley about the anatomy of the pelvic floor. This issue launches a few new columns, a client's experience with Rolfing SI, a fresh take on doing manual therapy with pregnant women, and a request to our readership to start the conversation about the business of Rolfing SI. Check out our 'Fascia Insights' column, where we talk with osteopath and researcher Isabelle Gilbert about her study quantifying soft tissue mobilization of Cesarean section scars. You may have noticed that the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute has published The Rolfing Skillful Touch Handbook. In this issue of SFI, you can read about how the authors brought this writing project together. And do not miss the article about how to find your living 'Line' by working with The Original Tuning Board?. Enjoy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The March 2021 issue (Volume 49, No. 1) of Structure, Function, Integration: Journal of the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute(R) focuses on theme of the head and the sensory organs housed within the head. Dr. Rolf called the head "the upper pole." She wanted an upright ease in gravity, where support below let the head lift effortlessly toward the sky. Her work with the head was comprehensive: both external fascial structures and the legendary intraoral and intranasal work. Structural integration was the goal, but with the implicit understanding that something more - something evolutionary - was possible for humans as our heads truly began to crown our structures. Now in the technological age, the life of a person's head is a story of screens, roads, and tasks; Rolfers write in this issue about how to soothe those hard-working eyes and live with ease above the neck. Our articles in this issue address the many ways Rolfing(R) Structural Integration and Rolf Movement(R) work address the head, eyes, nose, and mouth, as well as the senses of space. Ida Rolf's classical Seventh-Hour work is discussed, especially how our understanding of the head has deepened over the decades, leading to new considerations for the upper-pole work. We also have authors considering our potential to impact the brain through manual therapy, either directly or indirectly, and the role of our work in helping clients recover from concussions. Basketball and football fans will enjoy our perspectives article featuring two Rolfers who add value to the performance of NBA and NFL athletes.

Book Information based methods for neuroimaging analyzing structure function and dynamics

Download or read book Information based methods for neuroimaging analyzing structure function and dynamics written by Jesus M. Cortés and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Research Topic is to discuss the state of the art on the use of Information-based methods in the analysis of neuroimaging data. Information-based methods, typically built as extensions of the Shannon Entropy, are at the basis of model-free approaches which, being based on probability distributions rather than on specific expectations, can account for all possible non-linearities present in the data in a model-independent fashion. Mutual Information-like methods can also be applied on interacting dynamical variables described by time-series, thus addressing the uncertainty reduction (or information) in one variable by conditioning on another set of variables. In the last years, different Information-based methods have been shown to be flexible and powerful tools to analyze neuroimaging data, with a wide range of different methodologies, including formulations-based on bivariate vs multivariate representations, frequency vs time domains, etc. Apart from methodological issues, the information bit as a common unit represents a convenient way to open the road for comparison and integration between different measurements of neuroimaging data in three complementary contexts: Structural Connectivity, Dynamical (Functional and Effective) Connectivity, and Modelling of brain activity. Applications are ubiquitous, starting from resting state in healthy subjects to modulations of consciousness and other aspects of pathophysiology. Mutual Information-based methods have provided new insights about common-principles in brain organization, showing the existence of an active default network when the brain is at rest. It is not clear, however, how this default network is generated, the different modules are intra-interacting, or disappearing in the presence of stimulation. Some of these open-questions at the functional level might find their mechanisms on their structural correlates. A key question is the link between structure and function and the use of structural priors for the understanding of the functional connectivity measures. As effective connectivity is concerned, recently a common framework has been proposed for Transfer Entropy and Granger Causality, a well-established methodology originally based on autoregressive models. This framework can open the way to new theories and applications. This Research Topic brings together contributions from researchers from different backgrounds which are either developing new approaches, or applying existing methodologies to new data, and we hope it will set the basis for discussing the development and validation of new Information-based methodologies for the understanding of brain structure, function, and dynamics.

Book Mechanisms Of Gene Expression Structure Function And Evolution Of The Basal Transcriptional Machine

Download or read book Mechanisms Of Gene Expression Structure Function And Evolution Of The Basal Transcriptional Machine written by Robert O J Weinzierl and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-08-10 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the transcriptional control of gene expression is of fundamental importance to many areas of contemporary biomedical research, ranging from understanding basic issues (such as control of embryonic development) to practical applications in industry and medicine. Although elementary concepts of gene expression are described in all general molecular biology textbooks, the depth of coverage is often rather limited and recent discoveries are sometimes not adequately taken into consideration. This book presents much of the current thinking concerning molecular mechanisms of transcriptional control in a form easily accessible to undergraduates with an understanding of basic molecular biology concepts. It contains detailed information about the various pro- and eukaryotic transcriptional machineries that has recently become available through the combined efforts of geneticists, biochemists and structural biologists. The book will thus not only serve as an undergraduate text but also offer something new and interesting to more advanced readers and professional scientists who want to keep up to date with rapid advances in this field.

Book Structure Function Integration

Download or read book Structure Function Integration written by Ida Rolf Institute and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The July 2021 issue (Volume 49, No. 2) of Structure, Function, Integration: Journal of the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute® is highlighted by a collection of three themes: trauma-informed Rolfing® Structural Integration, diversity and inclusivity, and Rolfing SI as the family business. Due to the hard work of many researchers and Rolfers?, and the open-mindedness of our community to new information, Rolfing SI has become trauma-informed manual therapy. Looking to some of the key influences and influencers, we share contributions from Dr. Stephen Porges (originator of polyvagal theory, a critical contribution to understanding the autonomic nervous system and its responses to social engagement, safety, and fear); Dr. Pedro Prado, an Advanced Rolfing and Rolf Movement® Instructor who is also an instructor of Somatic Experiencing®; and Anngwyn St. Just, author and trauma specialist who alongside Peter Levine first brought an understanding of trauma and its specific needs to our community. We also hear from Rolfers who have a nuanced understanding of meeting trauma in our work, and we share articles on resources for training to assist in trauma-informed work.We then share two further themes. Our second theme is inspired by the Black Lives Matters movement, which galvanized many individuals and institutions into self-reflection as well as commitment to greater diversity and inclusion. Our grouping of articles comes from a group of SI practitioners who have united under the banner Liberation Somatics to explore blind spots and orient to social justice. Our third theme is about Rolfing SI within the family as a vocation or lineage. We hear from two couples where both spouses are Rolfers, and how the Principles of Rolfing marry well with principles for life. We also hear from members of Ida Rolf's family - Alan Demmerle, Joy Belluzzi, and Frances Demmerle, DO - on the impact of Ida Rolf and Rolfing SI on their lives and their own contributions.

Book The Dentate Gyrus A Comprehensive Guide to Structure Function and Clinical Implications

Download or read book The Dentate Gyrus A Comprehensive Guide to Structure Function and Clinical Implications written by Helen E. Scharfman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dentate gyrus is a part of the brain that has been a topic of intense interest since the beginning of neuroscience, and pioneering studies from the distant and recent past attest to this. One of the reasons for such interest is that this structure provides some of the most remarkable examples of plasticity within the nervous system. In addition, it is critical to normal cognitive function, although exactly how and when is still a question that eludes answers. Furthermore, abnormalities within the dentate gyrus appear to play a role in diverse clinical conditions, from depression to epilepsy and traumatic brain injury. The primary goal of this book is to provide a context, or background, upon which the detailed knowledge of the current era can be appreciated. A series of overviews are provided to clarify essentials related to structural organization and development, cellular components, neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, plasticity, and clinical relevance. * Covers the topic comprehensively from anatomy to cellular and systems perspectives* Includes basic research and addresses translational implications, so it will be useful to both researchers in the laboratory and clinicians who conduct experiments in humans* Chapters provide fundamentals, but also details and ample references for further review of the topic

Book Small X Behavior of Deep Inelastic Structure Functions in QCD

Download or read book Small X Behavior of Deep Inelastic Structure Functions in QCD written by A. Ali and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-x Behavior of Deep Inelastic Structure Functions in QCD covers the proceedings of the DESY topical meeting entitled ""Small-x Behavior of Deep Inelastic Structure Functions in QCD"", held in DESY, Hamburg, Germany on May 14-16, 1990. The book focuses on Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) structure function technology, including structure function measurements, photon structure, multi-parton interactions, and hadronic collisions. The selection first offers information on structure function measurements at Hera and pomeron and odderon in QCD and a two-dimensional conformal field theory. Topics include nucleon structure function measurements, handles on the gluon distribution, and photon structure. The book also examines Regge poles in asymptotic free theories; QCD phenomenology of parton distribution functions at small x; and possible parametrization of parton distributions. The text elaborates on low x structure function and saturation of the parton density and photon diffractive dissociation in deep inelastic scattering. The publication also considers multi-parton interactions in high energy hadronic collisions and bound-state quark and gluon contributions to structure functions in QCD. Discussions focus on bound valence-quark distributions, intrinsic gluon distribution of protons, and intrinsic charm-quark distributions. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in small-x behavior of deep inelastic structure functions in QCD.
