Book excerpt: Using 0D, 1D, and 3D models of galaxies, I explore different problems in galaxy evolution most suited to each technique. In the simplest case, a galaxy is described by a few numbers integrated via coupled ordinary differential equations. By allowing the galaxies to respond to a stochastic accretion rate, I show a natural way of generating the finite scatter observed in several galaxy scaling relations: the correlation between a galaxy's stellar mass and its star formation rate or metallicity. By comparing this simple model to observations, we constrain the process by which gas accretes onto galaxies, which must occur, but is essentially impossible to observe directly. Adding an additional dimension to the models, we explore the structure of galactic disks as a function of radius. We find that turbulence driven by gravitational instability in the disks and the resulting migration of gas can explain a wide variety of phenomena, including the age-velocity dispersion correlation of stars in the solar neighborhood, the central quenching star formation in disk galaxies, rings of star formation, and the observed radial profile of gas column densities. Finally, we run a set of fully three-dimensional galaxy simulations to try to understand what physics is responsible for basic properties of galaxies, including the rate at which they form stars, and the rate at which they eject mass in large-scale winds. We find that supernovae are capable of driving moderate metal-enhanced winds, but surprisingly they have very little effect on the star formation rates of dwarf galaxies. Instead, ordinary photoelectric heating dominates the star formation law in low-mass galaxies.

Book excerpt: We study the spatially resolved properties of star-forming galaxies at redshift z 2 - 3 on scales 1 kpc using a combination of morphological and kinematic analyses in an effort to characterize the major mechanisms of galaxy formation in the young universe. Using a sample of 216 galaxies which have been spectroscopically confirmed to lie between redshifts z = 1.8 - 3.4 in the GOODS-N field we demonstrate that rest-UV morphology (as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope) is statistically uncorrelated with physical properties such as star formation rate and is therefore unable to support the hypothesis that the prevalence of irregular morphologies indicates a high major merger fraction. Further, we present a sample of 13 galaxies observed with the OSIRIS integral field spectrograph and the Keck laser-guide star adaptive optics system which demonstrate the prevalence of high velocity dispersions 80 km/s and generally little in the way of spatially resolved velocity gradients, inconsistent with favored rotating disk models. We discuss the implications of these results for galaxy formation models, including gas accretion via cold flows and gravitational instability of early gas-rich galactic disks. There is some evidence for a trend towards stronger rotational signatures in galaxies with more massive stellar populations.

Book excerpt: A computer model for isolated disks of stars is presented and is used to study the self-consistent motion of large numbers of point masses as they move in the plane of the galactic disk. The Control Data 6600 computer system at the Langley Research Center was used to integrate the equations of motion for each star for systems containing from 50,000 to 200,000 stars. Any initially cold balanced disk was found to be violently unstable. A sufficient amount of velocity dispersion will stabilize all small-scale disturbances. However, most disks investigated were found to be unstable against slowly growing long-wavelength modes, and after about two rotations the disks tended to assume a bar-shaped structure. It was also found that the final mass distribution for most disks could be closely approximated by an exponential variation irrespective of the initial mass distribution. To study the development of spiral structure, the model was modified to include a fixed central force similar to that in the Schmidt model of the Galaxy. The mass of the stars in the disk was taken to be from 5 to 50 percent of the total mass of the Galaxy. The evolution of a number of initial distributions of stars was investigated. The results of the calculation gave a velocity dispersion for the disk stars which was about 50 percent larger than the value of about 30 km/sec found from observation of stars in the solar neighborhood. For some of the disks investigated, a pronounced spiral structure remained even after 8.5 rotations.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores the still unanswered question of how distant galaxies evolve through cosmic time: on one side it focuses on star-forming clumpy galaxies, on the other it investigates the size evolution of passive compact ones. Despite star forming clumps have been observed in high-redshift irregular galaxies since a while, their nature and fate are still highly debated. Violent gravitational disk instability in gas-rich, turbulent galaxies has been proposed as the main cause for in-situ clumps formation, although a fraction of them might have an ex-situ origin. Furthermore, clumps contribution to galaxy evolution is highly debated: it is not clear yet if they are long-lived or if stellar feedback rapidly disrupts them. From both the in-depth study of an extremely young clump that we discovered in the disk of a galaxy at redshift z ~ 2, and the analysis of a full statistical sample, I concluded that at least some clumps form in-situ due to violent disk instability and that they typically live ~ 500 Myr. This supports numerical simulations indicating that clumps are longlived and could play an important role in bulge growth. This might stabilize the disk, quench star formation and have therefore a link with the formation of the compact and passive galaxies that have been observed at high redshift. They have significant smaller sizes, at fixed stellar mass, than local counterparts. This discovery has ignited an important debate concerning the possible mechanisms that could inflate the galaxy sizes without altering much their mass. I analyzed a sample of 32 galaxies and I concluded that multiple minor mergers could be the main drivers of their observed time evolution.

Book excerpt: While mounting observational evidence suggests the coevolution of galaxies and their embedded massive black holes (MBHs), a comprehensive astrophysical understanding which incorporates both galaxies and MBHs has been missing. To tackle the nonlinear processes of galaxy formation, we develop a state-of-the-art numerical framework which self-consistently models the interplay between galactic components: dark matter, gas, stars, and MBHs. Utilizing this physically motivated tool, we present an investigation of a massive star-forming galaxy hosting a slowly growing MBH in a cosmological LCDM simulation. The MBH feedback heats the surrounding gas and locally suppresses star formation in the galactic inner core. In simulations of merging galaxies, the high-resolution adaptive mesh allows us to observe widespread starbursts via shock-induced star formation, and the interplay between the galaxies and their embedding medium. Fast growing MBHs in merging galaxies drive more frequent and powerful jets creating sizable bubbles at the galactic centers. We conclude that the interaction between the interstellar gas, stars and MBHs is critical in understanding the star formation history, black hole accretion history, and cosmological evolution of galaxies. Expanding upon our extensive experience in galactic simulations, we are well poised to apply this tool to other challenging, yet highly rewarding tasks in contemporary astrophysics, such as high-redshift quasar formation.
