Book Discourses of Empire

Download or read book Discourses of Empire written by Barbara Simerka and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The counter-epic is a literary style that developed in reaction to imperialist epic conventions as a means of scrutinizing the consequences of foreign conquest of dominated peoples. It also functioned as a transitional literary form, a bridge between epic narratives of military heroics and novelistic narratives of commercial success. In Discourses of Empire, Barbara Simerka examines the representation of militant Christian imperialism in early modern Spanish literature by focusing on this counter-epic discourse. Simerka is drawn to literary texts that questioned or challenged the imperial project of the Hapsburg monarchy in northern Europe and the New World. She notes the variety of critical ideas across the spectrum of diplomatic, juridical, economic, theological, philosophical, and literary writings, and she argues that the presence of such competing discourses challenges the frequent assumption of a univocal, hegemonic culture in Spain during the imperial period. Simerka is especially alert to the ways in which different discourses—hegemonic, residual, emergent—coexist and compete simultaneously in the mediation of power. Discourses of Empire offers fresh insight into the political and intellectual conditions of Hapsburg imperialism, illuminating some rarely examined literary genres, such as burlesque epics, history plays, and indiano drama. Indeed, a special feature of the book is a chapter devoted specifically to indiano literature. Simerka's thorough working knowledge of contemporary literary theory and her inclusion of American, English, and French texts as points of comparison contribute much to current studies of Spanish Golden Age literature.

Not Only Literary Critics But Also Some Noted Litterateurs Have Acclaimed It For What It Has Been Able To Achieve As A Work Of Art. In part 2, "Approaches," essays cover such topics as the Moors of Spain in Cervantes's time; using film and fine art to teach his novel; and how to incorporate psychoanalytic theory, satire, science and technology, gender, role-playing, and other topics and techniques in a range of twenty-first-century classroom settings.

Book Work in Progress

Download or read book Work in Progress written by Richard F. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work in Progress contains a separate essay on each of Joyce’s major works (Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake), with recognized Joyce scholars examining in each a central critical problem. Morris Beja examines Dubliners from the perspective of the “epiphany,” a concept formulated by the young Joyce. Richard Peterson finds a rhythmic flow in A Portrait that helps us see its narrative structuring more clearly. Shari and Bernard Benstock explore Ulysses to discern how movement and spatiality function in its narrative. Patrick McCarthy considers how Finnegans Wake and its audience are necessarily symbiotic partners. In the second grouping of essays Edmund Epstein and Fritz Senn each investigate how Joyce handles—or manipulates—language. Looking at three decades of criticism, Margaret Church demonstrates where the study of the Viconian cycle and stream-of-consciousness has led toward an understanding of the role of time in Joyce’s fiction. Sheldon Brivic adduces a Joycean psychology from the works that offers an additional dimension to the study of the texts. Suzette Henke traces the growing maturity of Joyce’s attitude toward women. Completing the collection, Father Robert Boyle examines the religious ethos present in Joyce’s work.

Book James Joyce and the Internal World of the Replacement Child

Download or read book James Joyce and the Internal World of the Replacement Child written by Mary Adams and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of the internal world of James Joyce with particular emphasis on his being born into his parents’ grief at the loss of their firstborn son, offering a new perspective on his emotional difficulties. Mary Adams links Joyce’s profound sense of guilt and abandonment with the trauma of being a ‘replacement child’ and compares his experience with that of two psychoanalytic cases, as well as with Freud and other well-known figures who were replacement children. Issues such as survivor guilt, sibling rivalry, the ‘illegitimate’ replacement son, and the ‘dead mother’ syndrome are discussed. Joyce is seen as maturing from a paranoid, fearful state through his writing, his intelligence, his humour and his sublime poetic sensibility. By escaping the oppressive aspects of life in Dublin, in exile he could find greater emotional freedom and a new sense of belonging. A quality of claustrophobic intrusive identification in Ulysses contrasts strikingly with a new levity, imaginative identification, intimacy and compassion in Finnegans Wake. James Joyce and the Internal World of the Replacement Child highlights the concept of the replacement child and the impact this can have on a whole family. The book will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and child psychotherapists as well as students of English literature, psychoanalytic studies and readers interested in James Joyce.
