Book Ultralow Density High Modulus and High Strength RSP Al Li Be Alloys

Download or read book Ultralow Density High Modulus and High Strength RSP Al Li Be Alloys written by DD. Crooks and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum-lithium-beryllium alloys have been prepared by melt spinning, using prealloyed arc-melted buttons. The alloy ribbon was comminuted and cold compacted to 30 to 50% density, vacuum hot pressed to 100% density, and extruded. The bar product was subsequently solution heat treated, quenched, and aged. The microstructure of the alloys consists of a relatively featureless matrix containing a homogeneous dispersion of fine beryllium particles, mostly 50 to 500 nm in size. The results of heat treatment show that the alloys respond to age hardening in a manner similar to that of binary Al-Li alloys. Preliminary results on the mechanical properties and their relationships with microstructural features are presented for the Al-Li-Be alloys, as well as their potential for weight savings. The authors estimate that these monolithic aluminum alloys may exhibit specific strength and elastic modulus values comparable to those of the best whisker or particulate metal-matrix composites, while showing concomitant high weight savings.

Book Metallic Materials with High Structural Efficiency

Download or read book Metallic Materials with High Structural Efficiency written by Oleg N. Senkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1998, Prof. Sergey Firstov invited me to the Frantcevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science (IPMS) in Kyiv, Ukraine to discuss possible collaborations in the area of advanced metals research. During this visit, a strong mutual interest was evident in a broad range of structural metals technologies, and a quick friendship was established. Countless subsequent emails and a reciprocal visit to the U. S Air Force Research Laboratory by Prof. Firstov and a team of scientists from IPMS ensued to discuss and detail a broad collaboration in the area of structural metals. Two years after the initial visit, a major investment by the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) was established to pursue the technologies defined by these interactions. The annual reviews of the AFOSR Ukrainian Metals Initiative were held in late May, a most beautiful time in Kyiv when the lilacs are in bright display and the air is scented with the smell of falling blossoms from the chestnut trees that line the major streets and many parks. The sunny days and mild evenings provide a welcome break from winter, and on weekend evenings festive crowds spill onto the Khreshchatyk, Kyiv’s downtown boulevard, to listen to street musicians, watch jugglers and comedians, or simply to celebrate with friends. The annual reviews featured long days of intensive discussion of technical progress, followed in the evenings by the warm hospitality of the Ukrainian hosts.

Book New Ductile Beryllium Aluminum Wrought Alloys

Download or read book New Ductile Beryllium Aluminum Wrought Alloys written by D. D. Crooks and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of a new series of ductile beryllium-aluminum alloys, which were specifically designed for use in aerospace vehicles, are described. Young's modulus, bend, and tensile properties of sheet and extrusion alloys containing between 24 and 43 per cent aluminum are presented. The elevated-temperature tensile properties to 1000 F (540 C) are given for both rolled and extruded material containing 36 per cent aluminum. The effect of temperature on Young's modulus of an extruded Be-31.4 per cent Al alloy is also given to 1000 F (540 C). Structural efficiency comparisons are made between beryllium and competitive materials, in some cases, to 1000 F (540 C). The improved ductility, machinability, weldability, and formability of these new alloys, as well as the lack of brittleness and freedom from chemical etching requirements, as compared to currently available commercial purity beryllium, should result in significantly lower installed cost than for beryllium. Substitution of beryllium-aluminum alloys for currently used HM21A-T8 and HK31A-H24 magnesium alloys could result in weight savings on the order of 40 per cent.
