Book Fundamental Aspects of Structural Alloy Design

Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Structural Alloy Design written by Robert Jaffee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF STRUCTURAL ALLOY DESIGN is the proceedings of the tenth Battelle Colloquium in the Materials Sciences, held in Seattle, Washington, and Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., September 15-19, 1975. The theme of the conference was the emerging science of alloy design. Although the relationships of properties of alloys to their composition and structure have long been a dominant theme in physical metallurgy, it is only recently that metallurgists have turned their attention from the analytical, post hoc study of the structure-property relationship to the synthesis approach of alloy design. As usual in the Battelle colloquia, the first day started with a group of introductory lectures presented by leaders in the field, each emphasizing his personal approach to the problem. This provided a historical perspective for the colloquium. These papers, together with the banquet address of Professor J. R. Low, Jr., who was honored at the colloquium, comprise the introductory section of these proceedings. Alloy design is generally specific to a given application. Thus, the needs in alloy design in a number of important applications, gas turbines, electrical-power-generation equipment, airframes, pressure vessels, and nuclear applications were presented in a group of papers. An agenda discus sion on "Needs in Alloy Design" followed. These papers give the external constraints on alloy design applications, and criteria for mechanical, physical, and chemical properties for which the alloys must be designed.

Book High Temperature Corrosion of Intermetallics

Download or read book High Temperature Corrosion of Intermetallics written by Zhengwei Li and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermetallic compounds can be simply defined as ordered alloy phases formed between two or more metallic elements. These materials have different crystal structures from those of the constituent metallic components and exhibit as long-range ordered superlattices. Their relatively low density, high melting point, high specific strength and due ductility make them the promising high temperature structural materials for aviation and aerospace applications. Among the big family of intermetallics, Fe-Al, Ni-Al and Ti-Al systems are attracting most of the attention. The objective of studies is to develop and utilize these intermetallic compounds as a type of important structural material whose overall properties is between nickel-based superalloys and advanced ceramics. However, a balance cannot always be achieved between mechanical and environmental properties. For example, iron aluminides have excellent resistance against oxidation and hot corrosion, however, their strength is relatively low. The higher specific strength and modulus than conventional Ni-based superalloys make Ti-Al intermetallic compounds of interest for aero-engine components, but the oxidation resistance of Ti-containing intermetallics is much lower than desirable; thus a key factor in increasing the maximum temperature in service is enhancing their oxidation and hot corrosion resistance while maintaining the excellent mechanical properties. This book is then intended to give an overview on the major efforts made over the last 20 years on high temperature oxidation and protection of intermetallic compounds including Fe-Al, Ni-Al and Ti-Al. In particular, the focus will be given to Ti-Al systems. After a general introduction on the structural and mechanical properties, the studies on the oxidation behaviours of these intermetallic compounds will be summarised based on the experimental observation reported in open literature. The emphasis will be put on the effects of alloying element, microstructure and coating/surface treatment. It should also be noted that only high temperature oxidation properties in air or oxygen are addressed; no discussion on hot corrosion, carburization, nitridation and sulfidation.

Book Microstructures and Mechanical Behavior of NiA1 strengthened Ferritic Alloys at Room and Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book Microstructures and Mechanical Behavior of NiA1 strengthened Ferritic Alloys at Room and Elevated Temperatures written by Zhiqian Sun and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to improve the thermal efficiency and decrease the greenhouse gases emission, it is required to increase the steam temperature and pressure in fossil-energy power plants. In the United States, research has been performing in order to push steam temperature to 760 °C and steam pressure to 35 MPa. However, the highest operational temperature for current commercial heat-resistant ferritic steels is ~ 620 °C. In this sense, new advanced ferritic alloys with better creep resistance are needed, considering such service conditions in next-generation ultra-supercritical fossil-energy power plants. Coherent B2-ordered NiAl-type precipitates have been employed to reinforce the body-centered-cubic iron for high-temperature applications in fossil-energy power plants. One NiAl-strengthened ferritic alloy, designated as FBB8 (Fe-6.5Al-10Ni-10Cr-3.4Mo-0.25Zr-0.005B, weight percent), has been investigated in this study. This study mainly focuses on three critical issues in the development of advanced NiAl-strengthened ferritic alloys: (1) the stability of NiAl-type precipitates at expected service temperatures (e.g., 700, 800, and 950 °C ); (2) the poor ductility and fracture mechanisms at room temperature ; and (3) the creep resistance and underlying deformation mechanisms. The present study achieves a systematical understanding of the microstructure-mechanical properties relationship in NiAl-strengthened ferritic alloys. It furthers our fundamental understanding of the phase stability and deformation mechanisms in precipitate-strengthened alloys, and provides new insights into developing new advanced materials.
