This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hofman, a researcher with the Chile-based Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, uses growth accounting methods and previously unavailable long-term series data to assess the economic performance of the region during the century from a comparative and historical perspective. In particular he compares Latin American economies to those of advanced capitalist economies, to newly industrialized economies, and to Spain and Portugal because of the historical ties. He looks at the reasons for the poor or negative growth during the 1980s and the apparent recovery in the 1990s and at such problems as debt, income inequality, high inflation, cyclical instability, and political and policy instability. Book The Impact of Structural Reforms on Growth in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book The Impact of Structural Reforms on Growth in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Hubert Escaith and published by Naciones Unidas, CEPAL. This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an evaluation of the impact of trade and capital account liberalisation in 17 countries during the period 1970-1996. It shows that growth was responsive to investment in both physical and human capital and there was a link between education and capital formation. However in aggregate the reforms did not have a significant direct impact on the growth rate because individual components of reform had offsetting effects. In addition the speed of reform was important, the faster the pace the slower the growth. It seems that the impact of macroeconomic or investment variables was more homogeneous than structural reform..s.

Book Honoring the Past Building the Future

Download or read book Honoring the Past Building the Future written by Ricardo Ávila and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although science has unlocked the secrets of the human genome, the causes of social and economic development remain stubbornly enigmatic. Why do some countries adopt new technologies more readily than others? Why does income inequality persist in some regions--even in the face of rapid economic growth? Why do some societies welcome the challenges of globalization while others attempt to turn back the tide? Honoring the Past, Building the Future examines these and many related questions through the experience of Latin America and the Caribbean. In an accessible, journalistic style, author Ricardo Ávila explores a tumultuous half-century in which the region went from backwater to breadbasket, from dictatorship to democracy, and from economic basket case to emerging power.

Book Challenges and Change in Middle America

Download or read book Challenges and Change in Middle America written by Katie Willis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to the important economic, social and political processes and development issues in this extremely popular region. The Central American nations and those of the Caribbean (including Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana on the mainland) share many historical processes as well as experiencing similar development problems today. These include European colonialism, structural adjustment, small size, reliance on primary production, influence of the United States and moves towards democratisation. While Mexico is obviously a much larger country in area, economy and population terms, it is included in this volume because of its close ties to the other countries in the region through processes such as trade and migration.
