Book The Entomologist s Text Book

Download or read book The Entomologist s Text Book written by J. O. Westwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist's Text Book: An Introduction to the Natural History, Structure, Physiology and Classification of Insects, Including the Crustacea and Arachnida It has ever been my wish to instil into the minds of those who feel an interest in the science, the idea that the mere collecting of spe. Cimens, or of attempting their classification, could not be compared, in an intellectual point of view, or with reference to the amount of pleasure derivable from the subject, with the investigation of habits of the animals, and the variations in their structures depen dent thereon. To those conversant with Entomological Literature, it was evident that there existed the want of a work like the pre sent, which should convey the modern elements of the science in as popular a form as possible; and it appeared to me, that this work might be so written, as to be the means of extending this leading principle of philosophical zoology. Book An Introduction to the Modern Classification of Insects Vol 1 of 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Modern Classification of Insects, Vol. 1 of 2: Founded on the Natural Habits and Corresponding Organisation of the Different Families The majority of Entomological Works which have appeared, during the last quarter of a century, and which have not only given so great an impulse to the science, but have also imparted to it a philosophical character, of which it was previously destitute, may be described as exhibiting either generalised views of the subject; or, of elaborate technical details of the genera and species of insects. Thus, whilst the delightful Introduction to Entomology of Messrs. Kirby and Spence, followed by Burmeister's Manual, and, at more humble distances, by the Insect Architecture, Transformations and Miscellanies, the Grammar of Entomology, by Newman, and my Entomologist's d104-Book, have made us acquainted with the general details of insect habits and structure; the Illustrations and Descriptions of the Genera of British Insects of Curtis, the Illustrations of British Entomology of Stephens, the Essay on the Fossorial Hymenoptera of Shuckard, the Lepi-doptera Britannica of Haworth, See., have led us to the investigation of the minute details of generic and specific distinctions. Book Key to the Families of North American Insects

Download or read book Key to the Families of North American Insects written by Charles Thomas Brues and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the Families of North American Insects: An Introduction to the Classification of Insects More than fifty thousand different species of insects are now known from North America. Their descriptions fill libraries and their final identification requires the knowledge of specialists. Obviously no single volume can provide for their determination. But this host of species is divided into groups of related forms, the families of insects, and it is with their recognition that the present work deals. Identification of the families has been effected by means of analytical keys, which have been arranged as dichotomies. In the first couplet, for example, two contrasting descriptions are given, one of which should agree with the insect to be determined. The number at the end of this description indicates the couplet which should then be studied, and so on until the final name is secured. All of the keys have been arranged in this way, as the writers' experience in the classroom shows that specimens can be most easily and rapidly classified with a key of this type, which also requires much less space for printing. While the dichotomies frequently represent the natural relationships or the lines of phyletic development, no attempt has been made to preserve natural divisions wherever the convenience and practical Opera tion of the keys would have been sacrificed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classification of Insects: A Key to the Known Families of Insects and Other Terrestrial Arthropods Long teaching experience has served clearly to demonstrate to the authors that the fundamental principles of classification cannot be fully appreciated through the study of descriptive text-books, nor can any comprehension of the infinite variety of nature be acquired except by close observational contact with the things themselves. Moreover, the study of a few selected types by the laboratory method fails to give more than a very superficial view of the organic world, and as biological knowledge advances, tends to emphasize the similarities between ani mals and to minimize the differences that exist between them. It is, therefore, highly desirable that the principles of taxonomy be pre sented to the student in a practical way to demonstrate particularly certain of its more fundamental and important phases.
