Book The Interface Structure and Electrochemical Processes at the Boundary Between Two Immiscible Liquids

Download or read book The Interface Structure and Electrochemical Processes at the Boundary Between Two Immiscible Liquids written by Vladimir E. Kazarinov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on the electrochemical processes at the interface between two immiscible liquids began a long time ago: they date back to the end of the last century. Such celebrated scientists as Nemst and Haber, and also young A. N. Frumkin were among those who originated this science. Later A. N. Frumkin went a long way in furthering the studies at the Institute of Electrochemistry. The theory of the appearance of potential in a system of two immiscible electrolytes was developed and experimentally verified before the beginning of the thirties. In later years the studies in this area considerably lagged behind those conducted at metal electrodes which were widely used in different industries. In the past 15 years, however, the situation has radically changed and we have witnessed a drastic increase in the number of publications on the electrochemistry of immiscible electrolytes. We are glad to note that the investiga tions show not only a quantitative but also a qualitative change. The theoretical works on the oil/water interface test not only the thermodynamic aspects of the inter face but also recreate the molecular picture of the process. Along with the now con ventional oilfwater system, electrochemical studies are made on various membranes, including the frnest bilayer lipid membranes, and also on microemulsion systems. A prominent place in the investigation of the oil/water interface is occupied by photoprocesses that come into play at the interface between two ionic conductors.

Download or read book Modern Electrochemistry 2A written by John O'M. Bockris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its nucleus in some lectures given by one of us (J. O’M. B. ) in a course on electrochemistry to students of energy conversion at the University of Pennsyl- nia. It was there that he met a number of people trained in chemistry, physics, biology, metallurgy, and materials science, all of whom wanted to know something about electrochemistry. The concept of writing a book about electrochemistry which could be understood by people with very varied backgrounds was thereby engendered. The lectures were recorded and written up by Dr. Klaus Muller as a 293-page manuscript. At a later stage, A. K. N. R. joined the effort; it was decided to make a fresh start and to write a much more comprehensive text. Of methods for direct energy conversion, the electrochemical one is the most advanced and seems the most likely to become of considerable practical importance. Thus, conversion to electrochemically powered transportation systems appears to be an important step by means of which the difficulties of air pollution and the effects of an increasing concentration in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide may be met. Cor- sion is recognized as having an electrochemical basis. The synthesis of nylon now contains an important electrochemical stage. Some central biological mechanisms have been shown to take place by means of electrochemical reactions. A number of American organizations have recently recommended greatly increased activity in training and research in electrochemistry at universities in the United States.

Book Living machines

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tony J. Prescott
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-04-13

Download or read book Living machines written by Tony J. Prescott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary research in science and engineering is seeking to harness the versatility and sustainability of living organisms. By exploiting natural principles, researchers hope to create new kinds of technology that are self-repairing, adaptable, and robust, and to invent a new class of machines that are perceptive, social, emotional, perhaps even conscious. This is the realm of the 'living machine'. Living machines can be divided into two types: biomimetic systems, that harness the principles discovered in nature and embody them in new artifacts, and biohybrid systems in which biological entities are coupled with synthetic ones. Living Machines: A handbook of research in biomimetic and biohybrid systems surveys this flourishing area of research, capturing the current state of play and pointing to the opportunities ahead. Promising areas in biomimetics include self-organization, biologically inspired active materials, self-assembly and self-repair, learning, memory, control architectures and self-regulation, locomotion in air, on land or in water, perception, cognition, control, and communication. Drawing on these advances the potential of biomimetics is revealed in devices that can harvest energy, grow or reproduce, and in animal-like robots that range from synthetic slime molds, to artificial fish, to humanoids. Biohybrid systems is a relatively new field, with exciting and largely unknown potential, but one that is likely to shape the future of humanity. This book surveys progress towards new kinds of biohybrid such as robots that merge electronic neurons with biological tissue, micro-scale machines made from living cells, prosthetic limbs with a sense of touch, and brain-machine interfaces that allow robotic devices to be controlled by human thought. The handbook concludes by exploring some of the impacts that living machine technologies could have on both society and the individual, exploring questions about how we will see and understand ourselves in a world in which the line between the natural and the artificial is increasingly blurred. With contributions from leading researchers from science, engineering, and the humanities, this handbook will be of broad interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Researchers in the areas of computational modeling and engineering, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, artificial life, biorobotics, neurorobotics, and human-machine interfaces will find Living Machines an invaluable resource.

Book Omega 3 Delivery Systems

Download or read book Omega 3 Delivery Systems written by Pedro J. García-Moreno and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-07-25 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omega-3 Delivery Systems: Production, Physical Characterization and Oxidative Stability offers the most recent updates for developing, characterizing, and stabilizing both traditional and novel omega-3 delivery systems, including their final incorporation into food matrices and physicochemical changes during digestion. The book brings chapters on novel omega-3 delivery systems (e.g., high-fat emulsions, Pickering emulsions, electrosprayed capsules, and solid lipid nanoparticles), the application of advanced techniques to evaluate physical and oxidative stabilities (e.g., SAXS, SANS, ESR, and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy), and new developments of food enrichment and physicochemical changes during digestion. The book provides a unique multidisciplinary and multisectoral approach, i.e., featuring authors from industry and academy. Long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) present numerous health benefits; however, the consumption of natural products rich in omega-3 PUFA (e.g., fish, krill, and algae) is not enough to reach the daily-recommended values. Therefore, the food industry is highly interested in producing omega-3 fortified foods. - Brings a holistic approach of omega-3 delivery systems, bringing scientific understanding on production, physical characterization, and oxidative stability - Covers key aspects to develop, characterize, and use omega-3 delivery systems for food enrichment, considering physicochemical changes occurring during digestion - Serves as an interface between lipid oxidation and colloids chemistry, encapsulation techniques, soft matter physics, food development, and nutrients bioavailability
