This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an initial field study of the performance and durability of brick veneer/steel stud wall systems (BV/SS), CMHC commissioned a series of building science experiments and theoretical studies to see how deficiencies observed in the field could be avoided in future BV/SS designs. This guide summarizes the findings of several of these projects and shows how to apply the results. Subjects dealt with in the guide include: rain penetration control; condensation control; thermal bridging; construction sequencing; quality control; testing and commissioning; and maintenance and repair. Construction details (in DWG and DXF format) and the master specifications for lateral loadbearing steel studs (in WordPerfect 5 and ASCI 1 text) are provided on diskette and can be copied and modified for project use. Measurements are provided in both metric and imperial versions.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Multi hazard Resistant Panelized Brick Veneer on Steel Stud Wall System for Out of plane Failure Loading

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Multi hazard Resistant Panelized Brick Veneer on Steel Stud Wall System for Out of plane Failure Loading written by Thomas C. Kuczynski and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structures everywhere are increasingly being subjected to sudden and extreme loading conditions. The main priority in any such event is the safety of the building occupants. Until recently, impact and blast resistant technologies had focused primarily on military structures, petrochemical facilities, and government buildings. Recent extreme events have influenced the transfer of these technologies to daily commercial and civilian use. Further research is needed into the implementation of extreme load-resistant technologies in the commercial building industry. This thesis presents a developmental study that included full-scale experiments on wall systems against out-of-plane uniform loading. The main objectives of this study were (1) to research and develop blast resistant enhancement techniques for brick veneer walls with steel stud backup systems; (2) to design and build a pressure loading facility to test full scale wall specimens under out-of-plane loading; (3) to experimentally determine the static loading capacity of the developed wall system designs; and (4) to compare the experimental results to finite element modeling analysis. The enhanced brick veneer on steel stud wall specimens were experimentally tested to failure with an out-of-plane load. The custom designed uniform load testing facility used a high-strength pressure bladder and reaction panel frame to conduct testing of the wall panels. Four specimens in total were tested. Component testing was also carried out to determine the reaction properties of the wall system fasteners. To achieve the desired tension-membrane response to the out-of-plane loading, connections between components had to be experimentally verified prior to full-scale specimen design and construction. Data collected for comparison during testing of the full-scale specimens included the load applied verses: deflection in the brick veneer, deflection in the steel studs, and load-distribution across the brick veneer ties. Finally, it is discussed that results presented from this study can be used as a basis for further experimental investigation into modern blast enhancement technologies, as well as some guidelines for their practical application.

Book Field Investigation of Brick Veneer steel Stud Wall Systems

Download or read book Field Investigation of Brick Veneer steel Stud Wall Systems written by Suter Keller Inc and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid adoption of the brick veneer/steel stud wall system by the building industry preceded the development of adequate design and construction standards. Great concern has been voiced by design professionals, contractors and building owners over the longterm serviceability and safety of the system. This report addresses these concerns. The survey involved a detailed investigation of eight buildings in four different climatic cities across Canada. It concluded that the performance of the BV/SS exterior wall system is not as much affected by the severity of the climatic exposure conditions but rather by detailing and construction practices, and by the choice of materials. The survey also identified the key vulnerabilities of this wall system.

Book Renovation Strategies for Brick Veneer Steel Stud Wall Construction Task 4

Download or read book Renovation Strategies for Brick Veneer Steel Stud Wall Construction Task 4 written by C. I. Wegner and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dinal tie comprises a threaded steel rod with a collapsible fastener that provides a means for attachment of a steel stud to brick veneer. The tie was developed in response to the failure of some brick tie systems and can be installed through existing masonry veneer and attached to the steel stud backup without removing any existing veneer, thus providing the potential for use in retrofit applications. This report describes tests conducted to determine the structural capabilities of the Dinal tie to steel stud connection and to develop likely design values. The test program included both tension (pullout) and compression tests on two different set-ups, each with different degrees of stud restraint. Service load considerations such as the effect of cyclic loading, the magnitude of the initial stiffness, and the contribution of secondary displacements including the local deformation of the steel stud are quantified, and safety considerations are also taken into account. Tentative service load design strengths are presented along with minimum pullout stiffness values.
