Book Structural Behavior of Cold formed Steel Beam Webs Subjected to Partial Edge Loading

Download or read book Structural Behavior of Cold formed Steel Beam Webs Subjected to Partial Edge Loading written by Shin-Hua Lin and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An extensive experimental investigation has been conducted to study the load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel web elements subjected to partial edge loading which may cause web crippling or web buckling. In this experimental work emphasis was concentrated on the cold-formed steel structural members having single unreinforced webs with stiffened flanges. In 1980, American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) revised its "Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members" For the design of beam webs, Section 3.5.1 of the AISI Specification provides the design criteria for web crippling. This thesis discusses the experimental work including some specimens with small length-to-depth ratios which may cause web buckling rather than web crippling. The failure mode for these specimens is beyond the scope of the current AISI Specification. Based on the results of tests conducted in this study, new design expressions have been developed to determine the critical web buckling load. Recommended design criteria are proposed for cold-formed steel structural members having single unreinforced webs with stiffened flanges"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book The Structural Behavior of Cold formed Steel Members with Perforated Elements

Download or read book The Structural Behavior of Cold formed Steel Members with Perforated Elements written by Charles S. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Analytical and experimental investigations have been conducted to study the influence of perforations on the structural behavior of cold-formed steel structural members. Since in many cases, the load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel members depends on the buckling behavior of individual component elements, emphasis has been concentrated on the study of the instability and post-buckling strength of perforated elements. In this investigation, the buckling loads and post-buckling strength of stiffened and unstiffened compression elements having single circular and square holes have been studied analytically by using the finite element method. The effects of different holes on the buckling coefficient have been verified by the experimental data obtained from the testing of columns and beams with perforated flanges. The equations for determination of the effective width have been developed on the basis of the post-buckling strength of compression elements. An experimental investigation has been conducted to study the influence of holes on the shear buckling load of beam webs. The test data was compared with analytical results of other investigators. Better correlation was found between the test data and the analytical solution for the simple support condition. A load reduction equation was derived on the basis of the experimental study. The crippling strength of perforated webs were also investigated experimentally. In this investigation, twenty tests were conducted to cover a practical range of height-to-thickness ratios. Based on the results obtained from tests, load reduction factors were derived for steel members with circular and square perforated webs. The stability of perforated plates subjected to equal and opposite point loads were investigated. The trend of this analytic study was found in agreement with the experimental investigation. Design recommendations are developed for: perforated stiffened compression elements, perforated unstiffened compression elements, perforated shear webs, and crippling of perforated webs"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.

Book Web Crippling of High Strength Cold formed Steel Beams

Download or read book Web Crippling of High Strength Cold formed Steel Beams written by Chiravut Santaputra and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The structural behavior of high strength cold-formed steel beams subjected primarily to web crippling was investigated analytically and experimentally. In this study hat sections and I-beams, formed from five different types of high strength sheet steels commonly used in the automobile industry, were investigated under various loading conditions. The yield strengths of these sheet steels vary from 58 to 165 ksi. In addition to the test data gathered in this phase of study, the experimental results obtained from the beam tests conducted at Inland Steel Company and Ford Motor Company were carefully evaluated. The evaluation indicated that the present available design criteria are not suitable for high strength materials with yield strengths exceeding 80 ksi. Following the analytical and experimental studies, new design formulas were derived for different types of loading conditions on the basis of available test data with material yield strengths ranging from 30 to 165 ksi. These empirical equations distinguish between web crippling failure caused by overstressing (bearing failure) and web buckling. Interaction formulas were derived for sections with single unreinforced webs and I-beams under combined web crippling and bending moment. Additional tests were also performed for the transition ranges between the basic loading conditions. These test data were used to verify the newly proposed design equations which can eliminate the problem of discontinuity between different basic loading conditions "--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Contact Loading and Local Effects in Thin walled Plated and Shell Structures

Download or read book Contact Loading and Local Effects in Thin walled Plated and Shell Structures written by Vlastimil Krupka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work summarizes theoretical and experimental investigations of real loading conditions of thin-walled plated and shell structures under loads concentrated on parts of their surface. There are presented more accurate and improved models of strain or stress distribution under patch loads considering geometrical and material nonlinearity in connection with stability problems and fatigue damage of studied structural types. The results of these investigations are of particular importance in the design and safety verification of many engineering structures, e.g. plate girders subjected to partial edge loading, closures of fuel tanks, footings and sadles of pressure vessels, reservoirs and pipelines.

Book Strength of cold formed steel beam webs in bending shear and a combination of bending and shear

Download or read book Strength of cold formed steel beam webs in bending shear and a combination of bending and shear written by Roger A. LaBoube and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An extensive experimental investigation has been conducted to study the load-carrying capacity of cold-formed steel web elements subjected to bending stress, shear stress, and a combination of bending and shear stresses. Emphasis has been concentrated on the instability and postbuckling strength of beam webs. In the study of beam webs subjected only to bending, the postbuckling strength of web elements and the effect of the compression flange on the moment capacity have been carefully evaluated for beams having stiffened and unstiffened flanges. Based on 84 test results, formulas have been developed to predict the ultimate moment capacity of cold-formed steel beams with due consideration given to the actual bending strength of web elements. These formulas are based on either the full web area or the effective web area. For a study of beam webs subjected primarily to shear, the results of 43 tests have been compared with the theoretical failure stress. It was found that the ultimate shear strength of cold-formed steel beam webs is affected significantly by the loading and support conditions. The structural behavior of cold-formed steel web elements subjected to combined bending and shear was also investigated. Interaction formulas have been developed to calculate the ultimate capacity of web elements with due consideration given to the postbuckling strengths for both bending and shear"--Abstract, leaf iii.
