Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Fish Biology provides an introductory overview of the functional biology of fish and how this may be affected by the widely contrasting habitat conditions within the aquatic environment. It describes the recent advances in comparative animal physiology which have greatly influenced our understanding of fish function as well as generating questions that have yet to be resolved. Fish taxa represent the largest number of vertebrates, with over 25,000 extant species. However, much of our knowledge, apart from taxonomy and habitat descriptions, has been based on relatively few of them , usually those which live in fresh water and/or are of commercial interest. Unfortunately there has also been a tendency to base our interpretation of fish physiology on that of mammalian systems, as well as to rely on a few type species of fish. This accessible textbook will redress the balance by using examples of fish from a wide range of species and habitats, emphasizing diversity as well as recognizing shared attributes with other vertebrates.

Download or read book The Plasma Proteins written by Frank W Putnam and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plasma Proteins: Structure, Function, and Genetic Control, Second Edition, Volume I is a systematic account of the structure, function, and genetic control of plasma proteins. Clinical relevance is introduced in terms of principles, with emphasis on human proteins. Animal proteins are also used as examples in some cases. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with a historical background on plasma proteins, along with their nomenclature, characterization, and genetic markers. The primary structure and three-dimensional conformation of plasma proteins are also considered. The discussion then turns to the chemical, physical, and biological properties of various plasma proteins such as serum albumin, lipoproteins, and immunoglobulins. Subsequent chapters deal with protease inhibitors in plasma; purification, physical properties, chemical composition, and molecular structure of transferrin; biosynthesis and metabolism of serum lipoproteins; and physical, chemical, and functional properties of the proteins of the complement system. The final chapter is devoted to ?2-microglobulin, with particular reference to its purification and physical properties; chemical composition and structure; physiological function, biosynthesis, and catabolism; and presence and function in cell membranes. This monograph will be of interest to molecular biologists and biochemists.

Book excerpt: The Plasma Proteins: Structure, Function, and Genetic Control, Second Edition, Volume II describes the plasma proteins in a systematic and integrated way, with emphasis on structure, function, and genetic control. The text presents the perspectives and a global look at plasma proteins; well-characterized major proteins; and integrated systems of plasma proteins. The emphasis of the studies is mainly on human proteins. Clinical relevance is introduced in terms of principles rather than detail. Biochemists, molecular biologists, physiologists, and laboratory researchers in the field of medicine will find the book useful.

Book Hemoglobin Function in Vertebrates

Download or read book Hemoglobin Function in Vertebrates written by G. di Prisco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual Congress of the Italian Biochemical and Molecular Biology Society (SIB) was held in September 1999 in Alghero, Sardegna, Italy. The programme envisaged a symposium on molecular adaptations of haemoglobin function in ver- tebrates. Haemoglobin specialists from several countries were invited to speak at the symposium and paved the way for wide-ranging and stimulating discussions. The symposium contributions have been collected together in this volume. The structure/function relationship in haemoglobins from vertebrates (fishes populat- ing temperate and polar environments, diving birds, marine and terrestrial mam- mals) has been tackled from many angles, focusing on the adaptation of the oxy- gen-transport system to the constraints dictated by the environment. Eleven arti- cles review some of the most recent developments of the studies on this ancient oxygen-transport protein, characterized by high conservation during evolution. The volume offers the reader an updated, state-of-the-art summary of a field that is enjoying a true renaissance. Covering the topic from several viewpoints, the volume includes protein chemistry (amino acid sequence, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures, thermodynamics of oxygen-binding features), molecular biology (globin gene structure, sequence, organization, expression and regulation) and evolution. In this representation of effective multidisciplinary and multina- tional collaborative efforts, reference is available to a wide range of disciplines and biological systems. The tools of the investigators comprise advanced and powerful methodologies developed in recent years, e. g.

Book The Plasma Proteins V4

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank Putnam
  • Publisher : Elsevier

Download or read book The Plasma Proteins V4 written by Frank Putnam and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plasma Proteins: Structure, Function, and Genetic Control is a systematic account of the structure, function, and genetic control of plasma proteins. Advances in the characterization and posttranslational modification of plasma proteins are discussed, along with the structure of a variety of plasma proteins such as serum albumin, glycoproteins, and serum lipoproteins, and immunoglobulins. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with a review of progress in plasma proteins, focusing on their three-dimensional structure, characterization, and microheterogeneity as well as genetic polymorphism and chromosomal mapping. The second chapter gives a comprehensive summary of the structure of nearly 100 proteins, from serum albumin and glycoproteins to serum lipoproteins, thyroxine-binding proteins, and immunoglobulins. The reader is then introduced to human plasma proteins of unknown function, together with high-resolution two-dimensional electrophoretic mapping. The remaining chapters explore developments in the structural study of carbon hydrates; synthesis, structure, and function of the oligosaccharides of plasma glycoproteins; and the evolution of the vertebrate plasma proteins. This monograph will be of interest to molecular biologists and biochemists.
