Book Structural and Functional Integration Within the Primate Masticatory System During Development

Download or read book Structural and Functional Integration Within the Primate Masticatory System During Development written by Edwin Dickinson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following thesis explores developmental changes to several key components of the masticatory system within a model primate species (Macaca fascicularis). In study 1, significant changes were observed in both architectural and biomechanical properties during development. Fiber lengths, muscle mass and physiologic cross-sectional area (PCSA) all scaled with positive allometry relative to both jaw length and condyle-molar length during development; meanwhile, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) height also scaled with positive allometry against both measurements of mandibular length. Study 2 introduces a technique for the non-destructive determination of architectural variables, using a textural recognition algorithm. Strong agreement between this technique and gross dissection was observed for both components of the masseter complex; however, the more complex temporalis muscle diverged in the measurement of muscle fiber lengths (and consequently, PCSA). In study 3, the functional impact of these developmental changes was measured using a series of biomechanical models, simulating masticatory motions within individuals of different ages. Older, larger-bodied individuals demonstrated increases in both bite force and gape potential. As such, adults of both sexes display an improved ability to consume larger and more mechanically resistant food items, mirroring observed behavioural shifts within this species towards the consumption of larger and more mechanically resistant foods with increasing age. These findings demonstrate that changes in masticatory anatomy occur alongside developmental shifts in dietary ecology towards an increase in the consumption of larger and more mechanically resistant foods, and an increase in the prevalence of wide-gape display behaviours. The anatomical configuration of the primate masticatory system is therefore observed to closely reflect its dietary and social niche, adapting during life to meet changing functional demands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new voice in the nature-nurture debate can be heard at the interface between evolution and development. Phenotypic integration--or, how large numbers of characteristics are related to make up the whole organism, and how these relationships evolve and change their function--is a major growth area in research, attracting the attention of evolutionary biologists, developmental biologists, and geneticists, as well as, more broadly, ecologists, physiologists, and paleontologists. This edited collection presents much of the best and most recent work the topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waterproof sensory sheet covering the mammalian body has a rich afferent innervation which provides an abundance of complex information for use by the central nervous system often in conjunction with information from receptors in the joints. This book is an attempt to provide a systematic account of the way in which this somatosensory system works. The properties of the peripheral receptors have been debated in scientific terms for about a century and the resolu tion of the conflict in favour of the existence of 'specific' receptors for mechanical, thermal and noxious stimuli is reported and discussed in the opening chapters of the book. An awareness of this specificity has forced a re-consideration of the ways in which the central nervous system de-codes the information which is showered upon it. Advances in knowledge of the fine structure of the central nervous system have raised functional questions about the operation and organisation of the sensory systems in the spinal cord and brain. Fresh insight into the morphological complexity of the dorsal horn and higher levels of the nervous system gives the physiologist a clearer idea of the units with which he works. Progress has been made in understanding the function of sensory relay nuclei in general and indivi dual tracts in particular and is fully decomented.

Book Photographic and Descriptive Musculoskeletal Atlas of Bonobos

Download or read book Photographic and Descriptive Musculoskeletal Atlas of Bonobos written by Rui Diogo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chimpanzees, including bonobos and common chimpanzees, are our closest living relatives. However, surprisingly, the information about the soft tissues of bonobos is very scarce, making it difficult to discuss and understand human evolution. This book, which is the first photographic and descriptive musculoskeletal atlas of bonobos (Pan paniscus), adopts the same format as the photographic atlases of other apes previously published by the same authors. These books are part of a series of monographs that will set out the comparative and phylogenetic context of the gross anatomy and evolutionary history of the soft tissue morphology of modern humans and their closest relatives. The present atlas, which includes detailed high quality photographs of the musculoskeletal structures from most anatomical regions of the body as well as textual information about the attachments, innervation, function and weight of the respective muscles, is based on dissections of seven bonobos, including adults, adolescents, infants and fetuses, and males and females, and on an extensive review of the literature for comparisons with common chimpanzees. It therefore provides an updated review of the anatomical variations within chimpanzees as well as an extensive list of synonyms used in the literature to designate the structures covered here. Moreover, contrary to the previous photographic atlases of apes, it also provides details on neurovascular structures such as the brachial and lumbrosacral plexuses. The book will therefore be of interest to students, teachers and researchers focusing on primatology, comparative anatomy, functional morphology, zoology, and physical anthropology and to medical students, doctors and researchers who are curious about the origin, evolution, homology and variations of the musculoskeletal and neurovascular structures of modern humans.
