Book excerpt: Because thermoplastics have been used in high-performance structural applications only recently, there is a great need for data on their behaviour. This book is dedicated solely to the engineering design analysis of thermoplastic parts. It offers mechanical engineers and materials scientists specific design techniques for predicting stiffness, strength, creep and fatigue of polymeric components. It also includes important information on the use of nonhomogeneous materials such as structural foams and thermoplastic composites.

Book Thermoplastic Aromatic Polymer Composites

Download or read book Thermoplastic Aromatic Polymer Composites written by Frederic Neil Cogswell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermoplastic Aromatic Polymer Composites: A Study of the Structure, Processing and Properties of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polyetheretherketone and Related Materials deals with the field of thermoplastic composite materials through a study of carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone. The book is composed of twelve chapters. The first four chapters are an introduction and basic learning of thermoplastic composite materials. These chapters include discussions on the components of thermoplastics, product forms, and the microstructure of aromatic polymer composites. The processing and manufacturing technology, including the fundamental operations, control, and the wide implications of manufacturing the composite material, are analyzed. The service performance structure of three interactions, namely, material, design, and processing, are illustrated. The strength of thermoplastic composites is then considered through an analysis of both shear and extensions with elastic modulus, but in the case of material strength, the differences between tension and compression properties should be taken into account. The book also notes that the durability, temperature sensitivity, and environmental resistance should likewise be regarded for a structural composite to have practical value and satisfactory performance. Lastly, the text explains that the numerous applications of thermoplastic structural composites, such as in medicine, aviation, marine and space technology, automotive, and industrial machinery, are all important and a rigorous evaluation is therefore necessary. The book finally suggests that the research into the future developments in the thermoplastic structural composites and the trend toward new design strategies and processing technology are important in optimizing the composite's great potential. Industrial researchers in the field of chemistry and polymer composites, students, and academicians interested in the design and application of polymer composites will find this book relevant.

Book Plastic Analysis and Design of Steel Structures

Download or read book Plastic Analysis and Design of Steel Structures written by M. Bill Wong and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plastic analysis method has been used extensively by engineers for designing steel structures. Simpler structures can be analyzed using the basic virtual work formulation, but more complex frames are evaluated with specialist computer software. This new book sets out a method for carrying out plastic analysis of complex structures without the need for specialist tools. The book provides an introduction to the use of linear programming techniques for plastic analysis. This powerful and advanced method for plastic analysis is important in an automated computational environment, in particular for non-linear structural analysis.A detailed comparison between the design codes for the United States and Australia and the emerging European Eurocodes enables practising engineers to understand the issues involved in plastic design procedures and the limitations imposed by this design method. Covers latest research in plastic analysis and analytical tools Introduces new successive approximation method for calculating collapse loads Programming guide for using spreadsheet tools for plastic analysis

Book Finite Element Analysis of Glass Fibre Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites Fore Structural Automotive Components

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of Glass Fibre Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites Fore Structural Automotive Components written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the investigation and development of damage modelling techniques for woven long glass fibre reinforced polypropylene matrix composites. The objective of the work was to develop and validate predictive models for the intralaminar damage behaviour of these materials, with the aim of applying the results to an industrial demonstrator component. Two damage modelling methods were investigated. The first, based on ply-level failure criteria and implemented in an implicit finite element code, was developed and validated using a range of coupon tests for a balanced weave 60% weight fraction commingled glass/polypropylene composite. The second method utilised a model previously implemented in the commercial explicit finite element code, PAMCRASH. This model was calibrated and validated using the same coupon tests as the first model. The models were subsequently used to simulate an industrial demonstrator component, during a two-phase design and development programme. The demonstrator, an automotive side intrusion beam, was designed and predictively modelled using the two damage modelling techniques investigated. Finally, the composite component was compared to a steel side intrusion beam, using a quasi-static vehicle test to a current legislative standard. This test showed comparable performance in terms of strength and stiffness for the two beams. It was concluded that the implicit finite element damage modelling technique can account for the damage and failure modes observed in a woven glass fibre reinforced polypropylene composite, but is limited when considering high levels of material nonlinearity and damage development, due to the stability of the implicit finite element method. It was also concluded that the explicit finite element technique was more suited to the simulation of damage development in thermoplastic matrix composite components, although the research showed that the model investigated was limited when considering shear damaging behaviour in a woven fibre reinforced composite.

Book Thermoplastic Analysis Using the Finite Element Code AGGIE I

Download or read book Thermoplastic Analysis Using the Finite Element Code AGGIE I written by David H. Allen and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have previously proposed a theoretical model for predicting structural response of elastic-plastic-creep materials subjected to variable temperature loadings. This model utilizes the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening rule in conjunction with the classical rate independent plasticity theory. The resulting constitutive law has been implemented into the finite strain finite element code AGGIE I. The authors have found it necessary to alter the formulation previously presented in order to obtain a concise numerical formulation. That modification is presented in this paper. In addition, a section is included which outlines supplementary information necessary for computer program input, followed by a computational procedure which is intended to aid programmers who wish to use this model. Finally, the results of several sample cases are presented. (Author).

Book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering

Download or read book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering written by N. Uddin and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The primary objective of this chapter is first to introduce and demonstrate the application of thermoplastic (woven glass reinforced polypropylene) in the design of modular fiber-reinforced bridge decks, and next the development of jackets for confining concrete columns against compression and impact loading. The design concept and manufacturing processes of the thermoplastic bridge deck composite structural system are presented by recognizing the structural demands required to support highway traffic. Then the results of the small-scale static cylinder tests and the impact tests of concrete columns are presented, demonstrating that thermoplastic reinforcement jackets act to restrain the lateral expansion of the concrete that accompanies the onset of crushing, maintaining the integrity of the core concrete, and enabling much higher compression strains (compared to CFRP composite wraps) to be sustained by the compression zone before failure occurs.
