Book Structural Adjustment Reconstruction and Development in Africa

Download or read book Structural Adjustment Reconstruction and Development in Africa written by Kempe Ronald Hope and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume is intended to make a contribution to both the literature and the contentious debate on the relationship between structural adjustment and reconstruction and development in Africa, as seen from the multidisciplinary perspective of academics and practitioners working in Africa on African development problems and issues. The implementation of structural adjustment in Africa has spawned a considerable, and still on-going, debate with vociferous advocates on both sides of the issue, particularly with respect to the efficacy of structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) as an antidote to Africa’s development crisis. This book contributes to that debate with a rich mixture of analytical views and ideas covering a wide range of countries and sectors on the role and impact of structural adjustment programmes on the process of reconstruction and development in Africa.

Book Structural Adjustment and Socio economic Change in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Structural Adjustment and Socio economic Change in Sub Saharan Africa written by Peter Gibbon and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarises the results of work at the Nordiska Afrikainstitutet/Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) on the impact of structural adjustment implementation on the economies, states and societies of sub-Saharan Africa. It consists of two essays and an appendix listing research projects which have been/are being carried out under the auspices of NAI. The first essay raises a series of conceptual and methodological questions in the context of a presentation of some of the main empirical results obtained from extended field work carried out during the course of 1992 and 1993 in Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The second essay presents the three main themes - private trading networks and structures, the changing political economy of land, and popular forms of social provisioning - that constitute the core of the second phase of NAI's structural adjustment research and, in so doing, provides a review of aspects of the adjustment literature. This report is, therefore, an attempt both at stock-taking and agenda-building as part of a wider quest for deepening our understanding of the structures and processes of socio-economic change associated with the crisis and adjustment years in contemporary Africa

Book Beyond Structural Adjustment in Africa

Download or read book Beyond Structural Adjustment in Africa written by Julius E. Nyang'oro and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-06-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings into sharp focus the problems of development under conditions of structural adjustment and their relation to democratic change in Africa. Contributors to this volume are interested in specific countries such as Kenya, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, etc., but do bring to bear a rigorous comparative method which uses a political economy approach to the study of democracy, gender, industrialization, agriculture and the state. Its comparative approach in revisionist political economy allows for issues such as the new international division of labor to become central to the analysis of the relationship between developed and underdeveloped countries. The state-centric approach, although useful, may have missed important undercurrents in civil society. An analysis of development through the state's lenses has predominated the study of Africa. The approach by contributors in this volume is equally interested in the state but is also concerned with non-state actors. This dynamic approach characterizes few texts on Africa. This work should attract those who are concerned with African development, specifically, and international political economy in general.

Book Structural Adjustment in Africa An Evaluation of Western Aid and Development Interventions in Africa after 1980

Download or read book Structural Adjustment in Africa An Evaluation of Western Aid and Development Interventions in Africa after 1980 written by Sebastian Veit and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,7, University of KwaZulu-Natal ("African Development"), language: English, abstract: The following paper addresses the widely discussed assertion that the Structural Adjustment Plans (SAP) are the cause for under development in Africa. This is in particular an interesting lesson learned for the development community, as it becomes obvious that mass poverty cannot be tied to one single issue, like household austerity. Moreover, the author stresses the point that poverty alleviation can only be achieved through interdisciplinary approaches that address the complexity of wide spread poverty in Africa. In conclusion, the SAP was an attempt, based on developed country thinking at the time, to fix the issue – the results were not convincing, as purely technocratic solutions hardly will solve the complex problems of Africa. This holds in particular true, when both the socio-economic backgrounds as well as the cultural foundation of people is ignored. In essence, the SAP were falling way short of considering “the human dimension”. About the Author Sebastian Veit, M.A. Social Science in Globalization, B.A. Hons in Business and Economics. Over the last two years he has been working on projects as a freelance consultant for the UNFCCC, GTZ and the World Bank. Despite the loss of his vision in an acceident in late 1990, he has studied on four continents. Thus, he has gained an understanding of the importance to include “the local perspective” of people in the combat of mass poverty. By utilizing his inter disciplinary experience, he stresses the need to take peoples socio-economic as well as cultural backgrounds into consideration for a successful solution. His goal is to further deepen his expertise in development strategy and energy services, that contribute in a sustainable manner to poverty alleviation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the design of adjustment policies in the latter part of the 1980s has generally shown greater attention to their impact on growth and social implications, this book argues that several orthodox adjustment policies are still incongruent with long-term development in Africa. It goes on to discuss a development strategy which could lead to a much awaited economic recovery and improvement in social conditions in Africa in the 1990s drawing its conclusions from a general theoretical discussion and national case-studies.

Book Beyond Structural Adjustment

Download or read book Beyond Structural Adjustment written by Nicolas Van de Walle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-08-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the World Bank famously put it back in 1989, 'underlying the litany of Africa's development problems is a crisis of governance.' This is a collection of authoritative essays bringing together prominent Africanists in political science and public administration to look at the role of governance in African development. The goal of the book is to move beyond the status quo debates about 'structural adjustment' and to look at all the public and civic institutions which are likely to play a critical role if Africa is to overcome its economic crisis.
