Book Our Continent Our Future

Download or read book Our Continent Our Future written by P. Thandika Mkandawire and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Continent, Our Future presents the emerging African perspective on this complex issue. The authors use as background their own extensive experience and a collection of 30 individual studies, 25 of which were from African economists, to summarize this African perspective and articulate a path for the future. They underscore the need to be sensitive to each country's unique history and current condition. They argue for a broader policy agenda and for a much more active role for the state within what is largely a market economy. Finally, they stress that Africa must, and can, compete in an increasingly globalized world and, perhaps most importantly, that Africans must assume the leading role in defining the continent's development agenda.

Book excerpt: Mali’s Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategic Paper provides a comprehensive framework for implementing an ambitious growth and poverty reduction agenda. Executive Directors approve the elaboration of GPRSP-3, which will guide the country in its efforts to sustainably reduce poverty. The strategy is both comprehensive and ambitious, and the approach to integrate short-term crisis-related programs within the medium term GPRSP-3 framework is commended. However, the successful implementation hinges critically on full political support and commitment to address key shortcomings.

Book excerpt: Ex Post Assessments are intended to provide an opportunity to step back from continuing program relations to consider an analysis of the economic problems facing the country, review progress under IMF-supported programs, and draw forward-looking lessons for future IMF engagement. The program objective of macroeconomic and financial stability was broadly achieved, as evidenced by the moderate fiscal deficits, low and relatively stable rates of inflation, and the maintenance of a sustainable external debt position; but raising economic growth remained a challenge. Structural reforms are also necessary to encourage investment and employment.

Book Debt Relief and Sustainable Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Debt Relief and Sustainable Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by George C. Abbott and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa is facing a debt crisis of major international significance. Not only have debt levels risen sharply, but output and exports have stagnated. Standards of living have fallen drastically, and in many cases have been reduced to the level of the early 1960s. This important book argues that it is impossible for Sub-Saharan African countries to resolve the debt crisis without outside assistance. The conventional methods of debt consolidation are inappropriate and of limited use in their case. The SSA countries need to undertake major structural reforms if they are to get out of debt and achieve long term sustainable growth and development. The book provides an integrated debt-development strategy for achieving both these goals. Debt Relief and Sustainable Development in Sub-Saharan Africamakes a significant contribution to an important but hitherto relatively neglected area of the international debt crisis. It will be essential reading for development economists as well as all those with an interest in contemporary Africa.

This book was released on 2003-02-27 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) for Mali. The PRSP is an expression of the government's desire to engage in development activity that is more intense, more organized, more consensus-based, and more effective, and capable of bringing about lasting poverty reduction. Although redistribution activities and social protection systems are necessary in the short term to reduce the impact of poverty, it is above all a matter of integrating these activities into long-term strategies that will put the poor in a position to help further their own economic and social well-being.
