Book Strongly Bonded Supervisory Relationships

Download or read book Strongly Bonded Supervisory Relationships written by Melissa T. Heinrich and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study explores the bond aspect of the supervisory working alliance through the lens of relational-cultural theory (RCT). Previous research posits a quality supervisory relationship is important for effective supervision and clinical outcomes. The Supervisory Working Alliance (SWA; Bordin, 1983) is a pan-theoretical model for the growth process in supervision including (a) mutual agreement on goals for supervision, (b) mutual agreement on associated tasks for accomplishing the goals, and (c) the emotional bond in the supervisory relationship. The process for mutual agreement of goals and tasks seems clear, the bond aspect of the SWA seems less clear. Research concerning supervisees' perspectives on quality supervisory relationships describes supervisor behaviors or demeanor, leaving gaps in the literature for a clear description of the bond aspect of the SWA. The primary purpose of the current study is to add a clearer description of the bond aspect of the SWA by exploring strongly bonded supervisory relationships from supervisees' perspectives through the lens of RCT. RCT is a counseling theory that posits growth and change happen through connection with others (Jordan, 2010). The current study utilizes an interpretative phenomenological analysis method of qualitative inquiry (Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2009). Participants included nine pre-doctoral interns from accredited university counseling centers who acknowledged having a previous or current strongly bonded supervisory relationship and received multicultural training in their program or internship site. Participants provided two interviews either face-to-face or over Zoom video conferencing. Analysis resulted in discovery of six themes: Intimacy in the Supervisory Relationship, Supervisor Guided Supervisee Development, Cultural Attunement, Supervisor Way of Engaging, Supervisor Integrity, and Positive Outcomes. Intimacy in the Supervisory Relationship was discovered as a core theme as it set strongly bonded supervisory relationships apart from other supervisory relationships. It is possible Intimacy in the Supervisory Relationship is the difference between strongly bonded and "good" supervisory relationships. The results also support RCT as a potentially effective approach to supervision due to the overlap between the themes of this study, descriptions of quality supervisory relationships in the literature, and core theory tenets. Finally, the results reflected and extended research that suggests the importance of supervisors' multicultural competence in quality supervision. Results of the current study suggest direct and on-going multicultural dialogue initiated by the supervisor is additive to strongly bonded supervisory relationships, and in some instances, integral to the initiation of the strong bond. The findings of the current study have particular relevance for the practice of supervision and the training of future supervisors. The results of the current study suggest the importance for supervisors and supervisors-in-training to have strong relational skills, and on-going development of multicultural competence--specifically, quality skills for initiating and maintaining multicultural dialogue. Quality supervisory experiences support supervision outcomes, which are vital for producing quality clinicians and quality clinical outcomes. Adding clarity to the bond aspect of the supervisory working alliance increases opportunities for quality supervision and clinical outcomes.

Book Correlations Between Supervisory Relationships and Effectiveness

Download or read book Correlations Between Supervisory Relationships and Effectiveness written by Patricia F. Stewart-Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This descriptive quantitative study explored the relationship of supervisory effectiveness and supervisory working alliance as rated by supervisor and supervisee. These constructs were assessed by two self report measures: Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (SWAI) and The Supervision: Adherence and Guidance Evaluation (SAGE). SWAI was used to gather information on the perceptions of the supervisor and supervisee actions of each other, how this affects the relationship, and the supervisee's interaction with clients. The SAGE was utilized to allow for measurement of the facilitating effect the supervisor has on the learner as demonstrated by use of a range of supervisory techniques that are known to be effective. The selection of these measures answers a call from the literature to examine the supervisory process using multiple, methodologically sound measures. A convenience sample of 42 counseling students and supervisors was drawn from students and supervisors at a CACREP accredited university in the Midwest. Participants had the option of completing the questionnaire in the classroom or at their discretion using the internet data collection service Survey Monkey. Several important correlations were examined using a Pearson's correlation coefficient: (a) between supervisee and supervisory perceived working alliance and effectiveness, (b) between supervisees perceived working alliance and effectiveness, and (c) between supervisors perceived working alliance and effectiveness. Positive correlations between working alliance and effectiveness ratings for supervision dyads were anticipated and supported. There was a strong, positive correlation between relationship and effectiveness ratings for supervisors and supervisees, r = .765, p = .01 for supervisee reports and r = .699, p = .001. Internal consistency for these measures was also supported by Cronbach's Alpha analysis. Correlations between supervisor and supervisee reports were anticipated but did not approach significance in this sample. Mean scores for the supervisor group were lower than the supervisee group for working alliance and effectiveness. Supervisor ratings on the SAGE are reflective of a significant difference (p

Book The Supervisory Relationship

Download or read book The Supervisory Relationship written by Judith M. Paskiewicz and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Abstract] Clinical supervision is fundamental to the teaching of psychotherapy and is a primary means by which practicing psychologists examine their clinical work and enhance their skills. A search of the literature reveals that little research has focused on the supervisory relationship, especially how the relationship is experienced by the supervisor. This is a phenomenological study that asks the question: How does the clinical supervisor experience the supervisory relationship? Open-ended interviews were conducted with ten Ph.D. psychologists, each with at least two years of experience as supervisors. Transcripts of the interview material were analyzed with the processes of Phenomenological Reduction and Eidetic Variation culminating in a final Textural-Structural Synthesis. This study finds that supervisors highly value their supervisory relationships. They find them enjoyable, enriching, and a way of making a meaningful contribution both to the profession of psychology and to the practice of psychotherapy. Supervisors are cautious and somewhat burdened by the responsibility they take on especially the legal liability. They feel protective of the clients of the supervisee and of the supervisees themselves. Supervisors see themselves as teacher, mentor, and supportive facilitator of the supervisee's effectiveness. They enjoy the relationship for the opportunity it brings to enter into an intense, creative process that improves their own skills as well as those of the supervisee. They work to create a supervisory relationship that provides an important supportive space in which the supervisee can explore and learn. The relationship deepens over time bringing increased comfort, openness, and friendship. When a sens of mutuality is not achieved the relationship dulls and an air of tolerance prevails. When supervision flourishes, the supervisor comes to regard the supervisee as a peer. In this apprenticeship process, supervisors become part of a professional heritage they value. Limitations of this study, and implications for training and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: The third edition of this book is an updated and expanded presentation of the widely used Integrative Developmental Model of Supervision. In contrast to other volumes on clinical supervision, Stoltenberg and McNeill present a comprehensive, time-tested, and empirically investigated model of supervision, rather than a broad summary of other existing or historical approaches. In addition to presenting a model of therapist development that spans beginning through advanced training, the book integrates theory and research from numerous perspectives, including learning, cognition, and emotion, as well as an up-to-date treatment of research directly addressing the supervision process. The model also examines the role of clinical supervision from an evidence-based practice perspective and addresses issues of common factors in therapy. The impact of cultural issues in supervision and training, as well as recent work in a competencies approach to supervision and trainee development, are also examined.

Book Evaluating the Relationship Between Supervisor Self efficacy and Competence and the Supervisory Relationship

Download or read book Evaluating the Relationship Between Supervisor Self efficacy and Competence and the Supervisory Relationship written by Henry Michael Bruns and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of supervision has several implications for the future of mental health. Despite these implications and a recent movement towards competency-based supervision, little research has been done on the construct of competency in supervision. This may be partially related to a lack of consensus as to what defines competency in supervision. Nevertheless, within the supervisory relationship, a supervisee’s perception that the supervisor is competent plays a role in the quality of the supervisory relationship. Additionally, it is hypothesized that a supervisor’s self-efficacy serves as a precursor for competency, indicating that a supervisor’s self-efficacy may influence their competence, and thereby influence the quality of the supervisory relationship. Given the lack of research regarding a supervisor’s self-efficacy, supervisor competence, and the supervisory relationship, this study examined the relationship between supervisor self-efficacy, supervisor competence, and the supervisory relationship. The results suggested that there was not a statistically significant correlation between supervisor self-efficacy and the supervisory relationship. This study also examined the correlation between supervisor competence and the supervisory relationship, finding a strong, statistically significant correlation between both variables. Finally, it was hypothesized that a supervisor’s competence would significantly mediate the relationship between a supervisor’s self-efficacy and the supervisory relationship. The results indicated that there was no interaction between self-efficacy and the supervisory relationship when supervisor competence served as a mediator.

Book The Relationships Among Supervisory Alliance Style and Supervisory Tools and Client Goal Attainment in Social Work Field Supervision

Download or read book The Relationships Among Supervisory Alliance Style and Supervisory Tools and Client Goal Attainment in Social Work Field Supervision written by Dorothy Daly Van Dam and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between client goal attainment and social work field supervision has been a neglected area of empirical study in social work. Multiple studies have found the supervisory relationship to be a predictor of student satisfaction (Bogo, 1993; Fortune & Abramson, 1993). However, there are gaps in knowledge and lack of empirical evidence on the impact of this relationship on client outcomes and about how and to what extent field supervision affects client outcomes. This study attempts to close the gap. In light of the growing importance and attention to evidence-based social work practice, attention to evidence-based field supervision is important also. The study attempts to provide a rationale for three dimensions of the supervisory relationship: alliance, style, and tools used in supervision that is grounded in research evidence. It provides a model for future research on the relationship between field supervision and client outcomes. Data was analyzed using Bivariate Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis. Bivariate Correlation revealed that there were significant correlations among some of the independent variables. The scores of the supervisors and students on alliance suggested collaborative and mutual understanding of the goals of their work, the tasks undertaken to reach the goals, and relational bonds considered essential for the completion of goals and tasks. The scores of the students on alliance and those of the supervisors on tools suggested that there is a strong relationship between the students' alliances with their supervisors and the tools used in supervision. The Multiple Regression Analysis revealed that the model was not significant suggesting no significant linear relationship between the client goal attainment and supervisor and student congruence on alliance, style, and tools. There is a vast need for more research to understand this relationship to contribute to evidence-based supervisory practice to strengthen this aspect of the social work profession. The findings of this study will help inform social workers on aspects of the relationship that may increase student learning and competence in order to increase client goal attainment.

Book Foundations for Youth Justice

Download or read book Foundations for Youth Justice written by Robinson, Anne and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can youth justice refocus its attentions on the rights and perspectives of young people in transition? This exciting new book outlines the state of practice now in flux within structures created by New Labour but moving in a different direction under the Coalition Government. With a loosening of rules and prescription, it explores opportunities for a fresh orientation that places young people at the centre and works collaboratively to nurture strengths, competences and capital. The chapters build a picture of the risks and problems that modern society creates for young people, while acknowledging that society must respond when their behaviours legitimately cause risks and problems for others. The burning question is how we do so and this book proposes a critical perspective that leads into a bold, but realistic remodelling of practice. It will be ideal for students of youth justice and criminal justice on foundation, post-qualifying or professional (CPD) courses.
