Book Stronger in the End

Download or read book Stronger in the End written by Lynda Beth Unkeless and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging memoir shows women how to live—and how to age—with grace and gusto. Lynda Beth Unkeless has explored five continents and thrived on the kindness of strangers. Life, she says, is meant to be an adventure. In "Stronger in the End: My 70 Year Swim from Chaos to Calm" she recounts her risks in various countries with good humor, encouraging her readers to live without guilt and shame. Lynda Beth has much to say about resilience. At 62, she was diagnosed with two brain tumors. Unbowed and undaunted, she healed and continued to work as an advocate for people diagnosed with mental illness. She has written and performed four one-woman shows at The Marsh Theatre in San Francisco. "Burning Man Breakup/Breakthrough" (2007) was followed by "Rosey," the story of a beloved San Francisco panhandler (2021). "Are You Somebody?" was based on her 2021 trip to Ireland during the pandemic and "Not Far from the Throat" told the story of her mother's suicide (2022.) "Stronger in the End” is about finding joy, getting through hard times, and learning to trust yourself. This brief memoir will make you laugh and cry and leave you feeling that you can conquer any obstacle. A must read for any woman looking for sisterhood and encouragement to follow her own star, no matter how late in life. "It's never too late," Lynda Beth advises, "to feel loved, and to do what you truly love."

Book excerpt: A detailed and vivid diary recounting the wartime experience in Paris during the occupation of France. “September 1939 slipped into October quite silently as if it did not want to attract any notice. The atmosphere is tense with expectancy, ready for the critical times that lie ahead. Everyone is geared for eventualities with courage and the élan of high purpose. Members of the Embassy staff have received their orders to leave for different posts: Bordeaux for some, Nantes for others and for others the Château de Candé. Some of us volunteered to remain in Paris. I was one of them. Paris will be safe or as dangerous as any other place, perhaps safer as every effort will be made to protect the city with its priceless works of art and its beauty.” Marie-Louise Dilkes’ astute observations of life in Paris during World War II are written from the unique perspective of the receptionist for the American Embassy. The Embassy was the first—or last—resort for many caught up in the chaos of war, and hers was the first face they would see as they walked through the grand doors. She takes us from the conquest and occupation of Paris by German forces but includes the war-time journey of the American consulate in Paris from Paris to Lisbon to Lyon to Bern and back to Paris. She ends with the triumphant return of members of the American Embassy staff, after the Allies forced the German Army out of Paris, and the reestablishment of the American Embassy in Paris.

Book International Law as Social Construct

Download or read book International Law as Social Construct written by Carlo Focarelli and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book distils and articulates international law as a social construct. It does so by analysing its social foundations, essence, and roots in practical and socially workable (as opposed to 'pure') reason. In addition to well-known doctrines of jurisprudence and international law, it draws upon psycho-analytic insights into the origins and nature of law, as well as philosophical social constructivism. The work suggests that seeing law as a social construct is crucial to our understanding of international law and to the struggle to create better working rules. The book re-conceptualizes both past and new doctrines of international law as 'constructs', namely, as strategies of concomitantly de-mythologizing and re-mythologizing international law. Key areas of international law, including subjects, sources, hierarchy, values, and remedies, are shown to be part of this process. The social impact on international law of transnational actors and stakeholders, normative fragmentation, global justice, legitimacy of both rules and players, dynamics and hierarchization of norms, compliance and implementation in municipal law is also extensively investigated. Five basic values of the international community, namely security, humanity, wealth, environment, and knowledge, are explored by stressing their inter- and intra-tensions. Finally, the analysis is extended to the role that international courts play in the prosecution of heads of state and other transnational players who violate international law.

Book Selected Writings on Slavic and General Linguistics

Download or read book Selected Writings on Slavic and General Linguistics written by Frederik Kortlandt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The larger part of the present volume is about Slavic historical linguistics while the second part is about more general issues and methodological aspects. The initial chapters contain a revision of the author’s Slavic Accentuation and a discussion of the Slovene evidence for the Late Proto-Slavic accentual system and of the Kiev Leaflets. These are complemented by an extensive review of Garde’s theory and an introductory article about the work of earlier authors for those who are unfamiliar with the subject. Then follows a discussion of changes in the vowel system, Bulgarian developments, final syllables in Slavic, early changes in the consonant system, and of Halle and Kiparsky’s review of Garde’s book. This results in a relative chronology of 70 stages from Proto-Indo-European to Slavic. The following chapters deal with the progressive palatalization, the accentuation of West and South Slavic languages, various aspects of the Old Slovene manuscripts, the chronology of nominal paradigms, and other issues under discussion in recent publications. The second part of the present volume contains a number of case studies exemplifying specific theoretical problems, most of them of a semantic nature. The synchronic studies deal with Russian and Japanese syntax and semantics, the diachronic studies with tonogenesis in different languages and with semantic reconstruction in Altaic and Chinese.

Book Fundamentals of Astrology

Download or read book Fundamentals of Astrology written by M. Ramakrishna Bhat and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1988 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrology is both Science and Art. Hence only the talented can appreciate and understand it. Rightly Visnugupta declares that nobody other than a sage can master the ocean-like science of astrology. The great Varahamihira declares, No sin will creep into a place that is sanctified by the presence of a true astrologer. No person who studies and divines the course of destiny will ever be found in hell, but will reside permanently in the world of Brahman. This book brings to the fore not only the rationality of astrology but also the nature and structure of the correct knowledge that our forefathers possessed regarding the predictable influences of planets on human beings, and gives a spiritual bias to astrology. The reader is taken step by step in this work from the rudiments Viz., the distribution of constellations in the Zodiacal belt which is divided into twelve Signs, and the planetary hierarchy, through the method of calculating the ascendant and other houses of a natal chart, assessment of the strengths, influences, aspects, affliction, mutual relations etc., of the planets, to the final stage of reading the brighter and darker sides of the subject`s life, his chances of success and failure, their periods, ingress of the soul into the mortal coil and exit thereform as well as its departure to other worlds according to its karma. In this book an attempt has been made to give a good account of the science of astrology, with a view to making the reader a good and true astrologer. It also shows that astrology does not make man a fatalist, a helpless automation in the hands of a merciless Fate. It should, on the other hand, help him to take to self-exertion and self-help. This hoary lore, according to the author, is to be practised not for selfish ends, but to guide the needy and the distressed, to remove the cause of their suffering and to turn their attention towards God. Book Evangelicals and the End of Christendom

Download or read book Evangelicals and the End of Christendom written by Hugh Chilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the response of evangelicals to the collapse of ‘Greater Christian Britain’ in Australia in the long 1960s, this book provides a new religious perspective to the end of empire and a fresh national perspective to the end of Christendom. In the turbulent 1960s, two foundations of the Western world rapidly and unexpectedly collapsed. ‘Christendom’, marked by the dominance of discursive Christianity in public culture, and ‘Greater Britain’, the powerful sentimental and strategic union of Britain and its settler societies, disappeared from the collective mental map with startling speed. To illuminate these contemporaneous global shifts, this book takes as a case study the response of Australian evangelical Christian leaders to the cultural and religious crises encountered between 1959 and 1979. Far from being a narrow national study, this book places its case studies in the context of the latest North American and European scholarship on secularisation, imperialism and evangelicalism. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, it examines critical figures such as Billy Graham, Fred Nile and Hans Mol, as well as issues of empire, counter-cultural movements and racial and national identity. This study will be of particular interest to any scholar of Evangelicalism in the twentieth century. It will also be a useful resource for academics looking into the wider impacts of the decline of Christianity and the British Empire in Western civilisation.
